Stresses In The End Zones Of Precast Inverted T-Beams With Tapered Webs
Short to medium span composite bridges constructed with adjacent precast inverted T-beams and cast-in-place topping are intended to provide more resiliency against reflective cracking and time dependent effects compared to voided slabs and adjacent box girder systems. This thesis investigates the stresses in the end zones of such a uniquely shaped precast element. The transfer of prestressing force creates vertical and horizontal tensile stresses in the end zones of the girder. A series of 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the magnitude of these tensile stresses. Hoyer effect is captured by modelling the strands as solid elements and defining the interaction between strands and concrete in the tangential and normal behavior using friction coefficient and hard contact, respectively. The modelling protocol captures spalling, splitting, and bursting stresses. It was found that, stresses in the end zones of precast inverted T-beams with tapered webs are not likely to cause any significant cracking if the beam is reinforced based on AASHTO’s provisions for pretensioned anchorage zones. Various modeling techniques were evaluated, and it was found that linear elastic models with truss elements are adequate for design purposes in terms of mapping where the end zone reinforcing needs to be located. However, if such modeling capabilities are not available AASHTO’s provisions suffice in terms of reinforcing the critical areas in the end zones
Control Synthesis for an Underactuated Cable Suspended System Using Dynamic Decoupling
This article studies the dynamics and control of a novel underactuated
system, wherein a plate suspended by cables and with a freely moving mass on
top, whose other ends are attached to three quadrotors, is sought to be
horizontally stabilized at a certain height, with the ball positioned at the
center of mass of the plate. The freely moving mass introduces a 2-degree of
underactuation into the system. The design proceeds through a decoupling of the
quadrotors and the plate dynamics. Through a partial feedback linearization
approach, the attitude of the plate and the translational height of the plate
is initially controlled, while maintaining a bounded velocity along the and
directions. These inputs are then synthesized through the quadrotors with a
backstepping and timescale separation argument based on Tikhonov's theorem
18 GHz SZ measurements of the bullet cluster
We present 18 GHz observations of the Bullet cluster using the Austalia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), which show structure in the Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect; in particular, a deep, compact feature which does not correspond to any bright feature in X-ray, optical or lensing maps. In general, the relatively deeper SZE features appear to avoid the regions with the most intense X-ray emission. SZE displaced from X-ray centres implies that modeling cluster dynamics is non-trivial. The SZE distribution in the western parts of the cluster are co-spatial with the radio halo indicative of a common origin for the hot and relativistic electrons in the turbulent wake of the Bullet
Relativistic inverse Compton scattering of photons from the early universe
Electrons at relativistic speeds, diffusing in magnetic fields, cause copious
emission at radio frequencies in both clusters of galaxies and radio galaxies,
through the non-thermal radiation emission called synchrotron. However, the
total power radiated through this mechanism is ill constrained, as the lower
limit of the electron energy distribution, or low-energy cutoffs, for radio
emission in galaxy clusters and radio galaxies have not yet been determined.
This lower limit, parametrized by the lower limit of the electron momentum -
pmin - is critical for estimating the energetics of non-thermal electrons
produced by cluster mergers or injected by radio galaxy jets, which impacts the
formation of large-scale structure in the universe, as well as the evolution of
local structures inside galaxy clusters. The total pressure due to the
relativistic, non-thermal population of electrons is critically dependent on
pmin, making the measurement of this non-thermal pressure a promising technique
to estimate the electron low-energy cutoff. We present here the first
unambiguous detection of this pressure for a non-thermal population of
electrons in a radio galaxy jet/lobe, located at a significant distance away
from the center of the Bullet cluster of galaxies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Scientific Report
A review on visual privacy preservation techniques for active and assisted living
This paper reviews the state of the art in visual privacy protection techniques, with particular attention paid to techniques applicable to the field of Active and Assisted Living (AAL). A novel taxonomy with which state-of-the-art visual privacy protection methods can be classified is introduced. Perceptual obfuscation methods, a category in this taxonomy, is highlighted. These are a category of visual privacy preservation techniques, particularly relevant when considering scenarios that come under video-based AAL monitoring. Obfuscation against machine learning models is also explored. A high-level classification scheme of privacy by design, as defined by experts in privacy and data protection law, is connected to the proposed taxonomy of visual privacy preservation techniques. Finally, we note open questions that exist in the field and introduce the reader to some exciting avenues for future research in the area of visual privacy.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.
