A Pseudoadiabatic Catalytic Reactor For The Conversion Of Methanol To Hydrocarbons

    Get PDF
The Pseudoadiabatic Operation (PO) of a fixed-bed catalytic reactor is an operating regime in which the temperature profile is monotonically increasing with the axial coordinate. It can be achieved in co-currently cooled reactors where the heat transfer fluid is a non-boiling liquid. This mode of operation has intrinsic advantages with respect to the hot-spot temperature profile usually experienced by packed bed units for exothermic reactions, such as better control of the temperature distribution and much less parametric sensitivity.;The PO was demonstrated experimentally for the first time in a pilot-plant-scale unit converting methanol to hydrocarbons.;Theoretical developments of the PO concept are also summarized in the present report. It was shown that the transition between PO and hot-spot operation occurs through an intermediate regime, and this was also confirmed by the experiments.;Based on mathematical simulations of the reactor, analytical a priori criteria for the determination of the operating regime were obtained. Comparison of the PO reactor with countercurrently cooled units showed remarkable advantages of the novel concept.;The experimental reactor used in this study was 2 cm in diameter and 2 m long, and it utilized a ZSM-5-class zeolite catalyst. It was observed that Pseudoadiabatic temperature profiles were consistently obtained, and that the Pseudoadiabatic Operation was compatible with high methanol conversions (80 to 100%). Under these conditions, the quality of the hydrocarbon products was satisfactory, the liquid fraction having a RON of 95-97.;The reactor throughput was comparable with that of existing methanol conversion processes.;Finally, it was verified that the process was flexible enough to provide different product distributions under the operating conditions tested

Background: Many patients with acute coronary syndrome in the United States electively choose to undergo percutaneous coronary angioplasty. One of the many risks associated with this procedure is peri-procedural myocardial infarction (MI). Recently, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors otherwise known as statins administered before the procedure have been shown to reduce the incidence of peri-procedural myocardial infarction. Many of the studies that have been done have used atorvastatin and have been limited to peri-procedural outcomes. Will administering a loading dose of rosuvastatin before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) improve mid and long term outcomes? Methods: An exhaustive search of available medical literature was conducted using Medline-OVID, EBSCO, CINAHL, Health Source-Consumer, and Web of Science using the keywords: rosuvastatin and percutaneous coronary intervention. Relevant articles were assessed for quality using GRADE. Results: Three studies, with one including a 12-month follow up study met inclusion criteria. A prospective randomized trial of 445 patients that included a 12-month follow up study concluded that a 40mg loading dose of rosuvastatin before PCI improved 12-month clinical outcomes. A single center, prospective, randomized trial of 160 patients demonstrated that a 40mg loading dose of rosuvastatin before elective PCI decreased the incidence of postprocedural MI during a period of 12 months compared to standard treatment. A randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 125 patients concluded that a 20mg loading dose of rosuvastatin before PCI reduces the incidence of postprocedural MI in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Conclusion: A loading dose of rosuvastatin has been shown to reduce the incidence of both myocardial infarction and major adverse cardiac events up to 12 months post-procedure. More research is needed to discover the exact mechanism of action. Furthermore, more research is needed to address the correct dosing, timing of administration, and whether or not rosuvastatin is better than other statins in the setting of PCI. Lastly, can patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarctions undergoing PCI benefit from the same treatment? Keywords: Rosuvastatin and percutaneous coronary interventio

Background: To study the association between cervical favorability at admission and maternal, perinatal outcome. To study the association between mode of delivery and maternal, perinatal outcome in eclampsia. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study carried out in a tertiary hospital. All women (92) admitted with antepartum eclampsia from April 2015 to April 2016, with >32 weeks gestation, reassuring foetal heart and no other complications were included in the study. They were divided into two cohorts delivery, maternal and perinatal outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: Group with favourable cervix achieved higher vaginal deliveries. Perinatal mortality and morbidity were significantly higher in patients with unfavourable cervix (mortality 39.6% and 20.5% respectively, p: 0.046: morbidity 25.6% and 7.8% respectively, p: 0.033), more so in vaginal delivery (RR 2.355). However there was no significant difference in maternal morbidity. Higher induction-to-delivery interval was the major contributory factor. Conclusions: Perinatal outcome was worse in patients with unfavourable cervix at induction. This can be attributed to increased induction to delivery time and vaginal route of delivery. Prolonged induction should be avoided in eclampsia

Genetic Literacy and the Acquisition of Clinical Genetics Knowledge in Medical Students

Many physicians report minimal clinical genetics education and feel ill-prepared to discuss genetic information with their patients.1,2 This study assessed the clinical genetics knowledge of University of Pittsburgh medical students through an online survey. The students were asked to rate their confidence in their knowledge of clinical genetics concepts and then answer multiplechoice questions that elicited knowledge concerning inheritance, clinical scenarios, and genetic test selection. The survey was distributed three months after the students took a 21-day Human Genetics course, required for all first year medical students at the University of Pittsburgh. Out of 147 medical students, 10 completed the survey (a response rate of 6.8%). Medical students’ responses suggested they are confident in their understanding of foundational genetic concepts such as the central dogma and inheritance but are less confident in collecting family histories and identifying indications for genetics referral. Contrary to the respondents’ confidence levels, the knowledge assessment revealed that students often incorrectly answered knowledge questions pertaining to inheritance and appropriate test selection. Students had lower confidence scores and lower knowledge scores for clinical genetics resources, testing strategy, and test interpretation. Most students reported experience with molecular genetics through undergraduate coursework; a minority reported genetics-related clinical or research experience. There was no significant difference between respondents who reported prior genetics clinical or research v experience and those who did not, suggesting that all medical students would benefit from learning the breadth of both molecular and clinical genetics in medical school curriculum. These results signify a need for genetics education that is pertinent to advancements in clinical genetics. This study is significant to public health because physicians with limited formal genetics education are at increased risk of accidentally ordering the wrong genetic test, failing to refer a patient in need of genetic services, or unintentionally providing misinformation during results disclosure, which can jeopardize the quality of care for patients and limit equitable access to healthcare.3-6 To build a skilled public health workforce, medical students must possess basic knowledge of clinical genetics concepts and resources to make appropriate decisions regarding genetic information in the clinical setting as future physicians

Laccase production by Coriolopsis caperata RCK2011 under solid state fermentation was optimized following Taguchi design of experiment. An orthogonal array layout of L(18) (2(1) × 3(7)) was constructed using Qualitek-4 software with eight most influensive factors on laccase production. At individual level pH contributed higher influence, whereas, corn steep liquor (CSL) accounted for more than 50% of the severity index with biotin and KH(2)PO(4) at the interactive level. The optimum conditions derived were; temperature 30°C, pH 5.0, wheat bran 5.0 g, inoculum size 0.5 ml (fungal cell mass = 0.015 g dry wt.), biotin 0.5% w/v, KH(2)PO(4) 0.013% w/v, CSL 0.1% v/v and 0.5 mM xylidine as an inducer. The validation experiments using optimized conditions confirmed an improvement in enzyme production by 58.01%. The laccase production to the level of 1623.55 Ugds(−1) indicates that the fungus C. caperata RCK2011 has the commercial potential for laccase
