Among the age-related diseases, the development of cognitive impairments, in particular dementia, is the most devastating for the individual and has great social and healthcare costs. Accurate information is needed about the prevalence and incidence of cognitive disorders and the physiology of the ageing brain. In particular, only scant data are available about the relationship between ageing, cognitive status and nutritional factors. In order to address these issues we planned the Conselice Study of Brain Ageing, a longitudinal study of physiologic and pathologic brain ageing. The center involved in the study was the municipality of Conselice, Ravenna province, in the Northern Italian region Emilia-Romagna. A total of 1016 subjects aged 65 and over was enrolled at baseline. Information about cognitive status at 4-years of follow-up was collected for 940 of them. These data have been used to estimate prevalence and incidence of dementia in the elderly Italian population and to investigate the possible role of baseline blood homocysteine as risk factors for dementia

Postambulatory Hand Swelling (Big Hand Syndrome): Prevalence, Demographics, and Association with Dog Walking

Introduction. Postambulatory hand swelling (PAHS) seems to be common in the general population. There are few mention in the medical literature. The objective were (1) to identify prevalence; (2) to compare gender and age groups; (3) to determine if dog owners and walkers are more or less prone. Materials and Methods. 1009 semirandomly surveys were completed from walkers. Age, gender, and dog ownership were assessed. We discussed, among dog owners, whether or not they walk their dog regularly, whether or not they notice swollen hands after walking, and, if so, if the swelling resolves over 24 hours or persists. Results. 699 females and 410 males, among whom, 28.9% of females but only 16.3% of males reported PAHS (P < 0.001). Surprisingly, those with swelling were statistically younger than those without (49.2 versus 52.8 years, P = 0.003), and dog owners were more likely than nonowners to report swelling (28.1% versus 21.7%; P = 0.015). In terms of persistent swelling, this was observed in twice the percentage of females as males (13.3 versus 6.5%) and tended to involve older subjects (54.0 versus 48.8 years), but with no statistical difference significance. Conclusions. PAHS is a relatively common phenomenon, seemingly more common in females

Seismotectonics of the Southern Apennines and Adriatic foreland: insights on active regional E-W shear zones from analogue modeling

    Get PDF
The active tectonics at the front of the Southern Apennines and in the Adriatic foreland is characterized by E-W striking, right-lateral seismogenic faults, interpreted as reactivated inherited discontinuities. The best studied among these is the Molise-Gondola shear zone (MGsz). The interaction of these shear zones with the Apennines chain is not yet clear. To address this open question we developed a set of scaled analogue experiments, aimed at analyzing: 1) how dextral strike-slip motion along a pre-existing zone of weakness within the foreland propagates toward the surface and affects the orogenic wedge; 2) the propagation of deformation as a function of displacement; 3) any insights on the active tectonics of Southern Italy. Our results stress the primary role played by these inherited structures when reactivated, and confirm that regional E-W dextral shear zones are a plausible way of explaining the seismotectonic setting of the external areas of the Southern Apennines

    Get PDF
The horn fly stands out among the main ectoparasites that affect national beef cattle. This livestock pest is controlled almost exclusively by insecticide products, which has led to serious residue and resistance issues. Non-chemical alternatives and reduction of insecticide use are essential for a sustainable control of this parasite. This study evaluated the efficiency of partial herd treatment as a strategy for controlling horn flies. Four experiments were conducted using products from different insecticide classes: macrocyclic lactone (ivermectin) phenylpyrazole (fipronil), pyrethroid (cypermethrin), and an organophosphate-pyrethroid mixture (chlorpyrifos + cypermethrin), in pour-on formulations. In each experiment, 200 Nelore cows were distributed in four groups for evaluation of the treatment of 20, 50, and 100% of the herd, besides an untreated group. Periodic fly counts were performed on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 in all animals. Product efficacy in the full-treated herd exceeded 90% (except for cypermethrin) at the end of the 1st week after treatment, being mostly higher than in partially treated groups in the first two weeks. In the groups partially treated, efficacy was generally higher in the groups with the largest frequency of treated animals. Regardless of the insecticide class and the percentage of treated animals (20% or 50%), the partial treatment of the herd showed three main features: a) fast and marked reduction in infestations throughout the herd, b) lower reduction of horn fly infestations, and c) shorter period of protection, when compared to the full herd treatment. Despite reduction in insecticide use and lower costs, viability of partial herd treatment as a strategy for controlling the horn fly is limited to situations where a lower level and protection period are acceptable; otherwise, the need for additional treatments tends to compromise the advantages of the strategy. The implications of partial herd treatment in the development and management of insecticide resistance should be evaluated.bitstream/item/129471/1/BP125.pd

    Get PDF
Objective To assess the determinants of ED use in paediatric patients enrolled in an Integrated Paediatric Home Care (IPHC) program. Methods A retrospective study was conducted using administrative databases on a cohort of patients enrolled in an IPHC program between January 1st, 2012, and December 31st, 2017, in Northern Italy. ED visits that occurred during the IPHC program were considered. Data were collected considering sociodemographic, clinical and organizational variables. A multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed. The dependent variable to identify possible associations was ED visit. Results A total of 463 ED visits occurred in 465 children, with an incidence rate of 1. The risk of ED visits significantly increased among children involved in the IPHC program after hospital discharge (OR 1.94). Additionally, the risk of ED visits increased significantly as the duration of IPHC increased (OR 5.80 between 101 and 200 days, to OR 7.84 between 201 and 300 days, OR 12.54 between 301 and 400 days and OR 18.67 to more than 400 days). Conclusion The overall results represent a practical perspective to contribute improving both the service quality of IPHC and reducing low acuity and improper ED use
