    Pelvic inflammatory disease by actinomyces: report of 1 case and review of the literature

    Actinomycosis is a chronic disease that is characterized by the formation of abscesses, fistulas and dense fibrous tissue at the site of involvement. Its distribution is worldwide. However, pelvic actinomycosis has increased in frequency and has been associated with abdominal surgery, intestinal perforation or trauma, due to the destruction of the muscular barrier. The clinical elements of suspicion are the latency of months and even years of symptoms and the history of being a carrier of an intrauterine device. Actinomyces israelli is a rare etiological agent of pelvic inflammatory disease, so it is difficult to reach the diagnosis. A case report is made of a 48-year-old patient with an intrauterine device older than 5 years, who entered the emergency department with abdominal pain syndrome and 7-day evolutionary fever accompanied by dyspareunia. She was hospitalized for antibiotic treatment, presenting an unsatisfactory evolution, with increased leukocytosis and persistent abdominal pain. An exploratory laparotomy with abdominal hysterectomy was performed. The histopathological diagnosis was pelvic inflammatory disease due to actinomyces. We must always suspect in the presence of a pelvic inflammatory disease in any of its clinical forms, the presence of actinomyces as one of the possible causative germs, especially in patients with intrauterine device for more than 5 years

    Gravity or turbulence? -III. Evidence of pure thermal Jeans fragmentation at ~0.1 pc scale

    We combine previously published interferometric and single-dish data of relatively nearby massive dense cores that are actively forming stars to test whether their `fragmentation level' is controlled by turbulent or thermal support. We find no clear correlation between the fragmentation level and velocity dispersion, nor between the observed number of fragments and the number of fragments expected when the gravitationally unstable mass is calculated including various prescriptions for `turbulent support'. On the other hand, the best correlation is found for the case of pure thermal Jeans fragmentation, for which we infer a core formation efficiency around 13 per cent, consistent with previous works. We conclude that the dominant factor determining the fragmentation level of star-forming massive dense cores at 0.1 pc scale seems to be thermal Jeans fragmentation.Comment: accepted in MNRA

    Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Ceria Nanoparticles Modulate Leukocyte–Endothelium Cell Interactions and Inflammation in Type 2 Diabetes

However, whether these nanoparticles can provide benefits in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) remains unknown. This work aimed to study the effects of Au/CeO2 nanoparticles at different rates of gold purity (10, 4.4, 1.79 and 0.82) on leukocyte–endothelium interactions and inflammation in T2D patients. Anthropometric and metabolic parameters, leukocyte–endothelium interactions, ROS production and NF-κB expression were assessed in 57 T2D patients and 51 healthy subjects. T2D patients displayed higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and characteristic alterations in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. ROS production was increased in leukocytes of T2D patients and decreased by Au/CeO2 at 0.82% gold. Interestingly, Au/CeO2 0.82% modulated leukocyte–endothelium interactions (the first step in the atherosclerotic process) by increasing leukocyte rolling velocity and decreasing rolling flux and adhesion in T2D. A static adhesion assay also revealed diminished leukocyte–endothelium interactions by Au/CeO2 0.82% treatment. NF-κB (p65) levels increased in T2D patients and were reduced by Au/CeO2 treatment. Cell proliferation, viability, and apoptosis assays demonstrated no toxicity produced by Au/CeO2 nanoparticles.     Metabolic footprint of aging and obesity in red blood cells

The study of the biochemical transformations associated with aging is crucial for understanding this process and could translate into an improvement of the quality of life of the aging population. Red blood cells (RBCs) are the most abundant cells in humans and are involved in essential functions that could undergo different alterations with age. The present study analyzed the metabolic alterations experienced by RBCs during aging, as well as the influence of obesity and gender in this process. To this end, the metabolic profile of 83 samples from healthy and obese patients was obtained by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed differences between Age-1 (≤45) and Age-2 (>45) subgroups, as well as between BMI-1 (<30) and BMI-2 (≥30) subgroups, while no differences were associated with gender. A general decrease in the levels of amino acids was detected with age, in addition to metabolic alterations of glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, nucleotide metabolism, glutathione metabolism and the Luebering-Rapoport shunt. Obesity also had an impact on the metabolomics profile of RBCs; sometimes mimicking the alterations induced by aging, while, in other cases, its influence was the opposite, suggesting these changes could counteract the adaptation of the organism to senescence.This work was supported by the Carlos III Health Institute and the European Regional Development Fund (PI16/02064 and PI20/01588), the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) of Catalonia (2017SGR1303) and the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (SAF2017-89229-R).     Recent dynamics and condition of coral reefs in the Colombian Caribbean

    Long-term monitoring data provide a basis to recognize changes in coral reef communities and to implement appropriate management strategies. Unfortunately, coral reef dynamics have been poorly documented at any temporal scale in the Southern Caribbean. Through the "National Monitoring System of Coral Reefs in Colombia" (Spanish acronym: SIMAC), we assessed 32 permanent plots at different depth levels in six reefs areas of the Colombian Caribbean from 1998 to 2004. Temporal trends in coral and algal cover were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. The model included the effect of depth levels (a fixed effect), monitoring plots (a random effect) as a nested factor within depths, and time (repeated factor). We found high spatial variability in major benthic components. Overall means indicated that algae were the most abundant biotic component in nearly all areas, ranging from 30.3% at Rosario to 53.3% at San Andrés. Live coral cover varied considerably from 10.1% at Santa Marta up to 43.5% at Urabá. Coral and algae cover per se are not always accurate reef indicators and therefore they need supplementary information. Temporal analyses suggested relative stability of coral and algal cover along the study but the causes for the observed trends were rarely identified. A significant decrease (p=0.042) in coral cover was only identified for some monitoring plots in Tayrona-time x plot (depth level) interaction, and importantly, few coral species explained this trend. Significant increase (p=0.005) in algal cover was observed over time for most plots in Rosario. Temporal trajectories in algal cover were influenced by depth-significant time x depth interaction-in San Andrés (increase, p=0.004) and Urabá (decrease, p=0.027). Algae trends were mainly explained by changes in algal turfs. Monitoring programs must focus on the mechanisms mediating the changes, in particular those concerning coral recovery and reef resilience in the current context of climate change. Rev. Biol. Entre 1998 y el 2004 se monitorearon un total de 32 parcelas permanentes ubicadas a diferentes niveles de profundidad en seis áreas arrecifales del Caribe colombiano. Los patrones temporales de algas y corales fueron evaluados mediante análisis de varianza de medidas repetidas. Los promedios generales indicaron que las algas dominaron en la mayoría de las áreas evaluadas, variando de 30.3% (Rosario) hasta 53.3% (San Andrés). La cobertura coralina fluctuó considerablemente entre 10.1% (Santa Marta) y 43.5% (Urabá). Los arrecifes estudiados han permanecido relativamente estables durante el periodo evaluado en términos de algas y corales. El único cambio significativo en la cobertura se detectó en algunas parcelas de monitoreo del Tayrona, y pocas especies coralinas explicaron la tendencia de disminución. En Rosario se detectó una tendencia significativa de incremento para las algas en la mayoría de las parcelas. En San Andrés y Urabá las tendencias temporales (aumento y disminución respectivamente) se presentaron en ciertos niveles de profundidad. En estas dos áreas las tendencias en la cobertura de las algas fueron explicadas principalmente por cambios en los tapetes algales. En general las causas de los patrones observados no pudieron identificarse. Los programas de monitoreo deben evaluar no solo las tendencias generales de algas y corales sino también las de sus componentes (especies de coral y grupos funcionales de algas). Así mismo, deben enfocarse en evaluar los mecanismos involucrados en los cambios, en especial aquellos relacionados con la recuperación coralina y la resiliencia arrecifal, de manera que se pueda enfrentar el deterioro arrecifal en el actual contexto de cambio climático

    Metabolic fingerprint of acromegaly and its potential usefulness in clinical practice

The present study was aimed at identifying metabolites that could be used as biomarkers for a better disease phenotyping. For this purpose, metabolic fingerprint using an untargeted metabolomic approach was examined in serum from 30 patients with acromegaly and 30 age-matched controls. Patients with acromegaly presented fewer branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) compared to the control group (valine: 4.75 ± 0.87 vs. 5.20 ± 1.06 arbitrary units (AUs), p < 0.05; isoleucine: 2.54 ± 0.41 vs. 2.80 ± 0.51 AUs; p < 0.05). BCAAs were also lower in patients with active disease compared to patients with normal levels of IGF-1 with or without medical treatment. GH, but not IGF-1, serum levels were inversely correlated with both valine and isoleucine. These findings indicate that low levels of BCAAs represent the main metabolic fingerprint of acromegaly and that GH, rather than IGF-1, might be the primary mediator. In addition, our results suggest that the assessment of BCAAs could help to identify active disease and to monitor the response to therapeutic strategies.This research was funded by Pfizer Global Investigator Initiated Research.
