    Faint-source-star planetary microlensing: the discovery of the cold gas-giant planet OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb

    We report the discovery of a planet – OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb– via gravitational microlensing. Observations for the lensing event were made by the following groups: Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics; Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment; Wise Observatory; RoboNET/Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope; Microlensing Network for the Detection of Small Terrestrial Exoplanets; and μ-FUN. All analyses of the light-curve data favour a lens system comprising a planetary mass orbiting a host star. The most-favoured binary lens model has a mass ratio between the two lens masses of (4.78 ± 0.13) × 10−3. Subject to some important assumptions, a Bayesian probability density analysis suggests the lens system comprises a 3.09+1.02 −1.12 MJ planet orbiting a 0.62+0.20 −0.22 M host star at a deprojected orbital separation of 4.40+2.16 −1.46 au. The distance to the lens system is 2.22+0.96 −0.83 kpc. Planet OGLE- 2014-BLG-0676Lb provides additional data to the growing number of cool planets discovered using gravitational microlensing against which planetary formation theories may be tested. Most of the light in the baseline of this event is expected to come from the lens and thus high-resolution imaging observations could confirm our planetary model interpretation

    Optical interferometry provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. Through direct observation of rotationally distorted photospheres at sub-milliarcsecond scales, we are now able to characterize latitude dependencies of stellar radius, temperature structure, and even energy transport. These detailed new views of stars are leading to revised thinking in a broad array of associated topics, such as spectroscopy, stellar evolution, and exoplanet detection. As newly advanced techniques and instrumentation mature, this topic in astronomy is poised to greatly expand in depth and influence.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&AR

    The effects of reminiscence on psychological well-being in older adults: a meta-analysis.

    This paper presents the results of a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of reminiscence on psychological well-being across different target groups and treatment modalities. Fifteen controlled outcome studies were included. An overall effect size of 0.54 was found, indicating a moderate influence of reminiscence on life-satisfaction and emotional well-being in older adults. Life-review was found to have significantly greater effect on psychological well-being than simple reminiscence. In addition, reminiscence had significantly greater effect on community-dwelling adults than adults living in nursing homes or residential care. Other characteristics of participants or interventions were not found to moderate effects. It is concluded that reminiscence in general, but especially life review, are potentially effective methods for the enhancement of psychological well-being in older adults. However, a replication of effectiveness studies of the well-defined protocols is now warranted. © 2007 Taylor & Francis

    The ratio of plasma phenylalanine to other large neutral amino acids is not a risk factor for tardive dyskinesia.

    The ratio of the plasma concentration of phenylalanine (PA) to the sum of the plasma concentrations of other large neutral amino acids (LNAA) was calculated in 26 chronic, in-patient schizophrenics who met diagnostic criteria for tardive dyskinesia and 22 patients who did not. No difference in the PA/LNAA ratio was found between the two groups. Small positive correlations were found between age and both PA/LNAA ratio and tardive dyskinesia. Neuroleptic dose correlated negatively with both age and plasma PA/LNAA ratio. No support was found for previous reports of increased plasma PA/LNAA ratio in schizophrenic patients with tardive dyskinesia
