Diasporic Relationships and Processes: South Asian young adults in Denmark. The article explores social psychological aspects concerned with diasporic relationships among the South Asian diaspora in Denmark and is a follow up of a study conducted in the midnineties. The first wave focussed on the intergenerational relations within the double challenge perspective dealing with age transition and ethnic belonging while the second wave focuses at the relationships across the borders within a theoretical framework of life course perspectives combined with diaspora conceptualisations. In-depth interviews were conducted and analysed through meaning condensation. The gendered experiences of the young adults perceived as active actors indicate reinterpretation of the self, others and home. The results depict that the young adults' relationships involve both the country of origin and the Danish welfare society, though refutes the myth of return, in spite of Denmark turning increasingly restrictive in migration policies in the past years

This chapter1 probes selected social-psychological aspects for South Asian young adults in Denmark and is a follow up of a Danish project conducted in the mid-nineties. The diasporic conceptualizations in respect to human centeredness and cultural processes in migration combined with life course perspective, provide the theoretical framework for this study. In-depth interviews were employed, and information was analyzed through meaning condensation and subsequent categorization of the narratives. The results show the reinterpretation of the self, “others” and home in the diasporic families, for the parental as well as the young generation. The chapter also depicts the young adults’ diasporic identities involving the ancestral countries as well as the Scandinavian welfare societies. The results hardly support the myth of return, although the countries of residence have turned increasingly restrictive in migration policies in the past years

Doing intimacy differently: Couples Living Apart Together TransnationallyThis GDA focuses on the relationship dynamics of couples living apart across nations but still intimately together, primarily for job or educational reasons, based on an empirical study. It fills a gap in the scholarship as there is limited research on this topic, even as the number of committed couples living apart increases due to globalisation and the forces of capitalism. Given that migration and mobility of couples are not likely to come to an end with the pandemic, a nuanced and critical analysis of digital technology use for relationship maintenance, at times across the Global North and the Global South, is covered. Moreover, the consequences of restrictive migratory regimes and spirituality for the meaning-making of this unconventional form of intimacy are also touched on, which challenge existing Eurocentric conceptualisations of intimacy and relationships. This GDA focuses on the relationship dynamics of couples living apart acrossnations but still intimately together, primarily for job or educational reasons, based on an empirical study. Intimate Partnership Formation and Intergenerational Relationships among Ethnic Minority Youth in Denmark

This article is based on a research project drawing upon in-depth qualitative interviews (N=61) and data from a survey (N=628) of young people and parents belonging to the five largest ethnic minority groups in Denmark. The theoretical framework combines conceptualisations about conflict and the family with theories about modernisation/individualisation and discrimination effects. The dominating tendencies in the inter-generational relationships between young people and their parents on the subject of the young people’s intimate partnership formation are analysed and discussed. The ethic minority youth and parents’ reflections on the ethnic majority partnership formation patterns are delineated. The analyses indicate that relationships between young people and parents on the issue of intimate partnership formation can be cooperative or in opposition. This is contrary to the widespread discourse about serious conflicts between generations. Thus the article criticises the reductionistic conception of partnership formation being a question of either-or processes, i.e. own choice or parental choice, and appeals for broad concepts which include both-and processes, i.e. own choice and parental accept
