    GRANAT/WATCH catalogue of cosmic gamma-ray bursts: December 1989 to September 1994

    We present the catalogue of gamma-ray bursts observed with the WATCH all-sky monitor on board the GRANAT satellite during the period December 1989 to September 1994. The cosmic origin of 95 bursts comprising the catalogue is confirmed either by their localization with WATCH or by their detection with other GRB experiments. For each burst its time history and information on its intensity in the two energy ranges 8-20 keV and 20-60 keV are presented. Most events show hardening of the energy spectrum near the burst peak. In part of the bursts an X-ray precursor or a tail is seen at 8-20 keV. We have determined the celestial positions of the sources of 47 bursts. Their localization regions (at 3-sigma confidence level) are equivalent in area to circles with radii ranging from 0.2 to 1.6 deg. The burst sources appear isotropically distributed on the sky on large angular scales.Comment: 18 pages (including 3 tables and 7 figures), LaTeX, l-aa style.     Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly: an analysis of locus heterogeneity and phenotypic variation

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Locus heterogeneity is well established in autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) and to date five loci have been mapped. However, the relative contributions of these loci have not been assessed and genotype-phenotype correlations have not been investigated. DESIGN: A study population of 56 consanguineous families resident in or originating from northern Pakistan was ascertained and assessed by the authors. A panel of microsatellite markers spanning each of the MCPH loci was designed, against which the families were genotyped. RESULTS: The head circumference of the 131 affected subjects ranged from 4 to 14 SD below the mean, but there was little intrafamilial variation among affecteds (Ā± 1 SD). MCPH5 was the most prevalent, with 24/56 families consistent with linkage; 2/56 families were compatible with linkage to MCPH1, 10/56 to MCPH2, 2/56 to MCPH3, none to MCPH4, and 18/56 did not segregate with any of the loci. CONCLUSIONS: MCPH5 is the most common locus in this population. On clinical grounds alone, the phenotype of families linked to each MCPH locus could not be distinguished. We have also shown that further MCPH loci await discovery with a number of families as yet unlinked

    In this work the influence of bores along circular cylinder and its rotation with respect to free stream on heat transfer rate was carried out experimentally. Three types of hollow cylinder were presented. The first one is hollow with inside diameter 15.3 mm and outside diameter 23mm. While, both the second and third cylinders have the same inside and outside diameter and provided two bores for each one with diameters 6.3 mm for the second cylinderĀ  and 7.6mm for the third one. The second and third cylinders rotate with respect to free stream at angles of (0o, 30o and 60o). The free stream behaviors were observed using the smoke wind tunnel incense. Moreover, the periodic heat source was applied on these three cylinders and the temperature distributions were measured using digital thermometer. Three magnitudes of air flow velocities were presented (1.4 m/s, 1.7 m/s and 2.45 m/s) in experimental work. ANSYS software was used to predict the pressure and velocity distribution adhere the cylinder wall at maximum flow velocity (2.45 m/s). These distributions of pressure and velocity recognize the separation angles and benefit to reveal the residual mass flow inside the hollow puncher cylinder for each step. Also, the separation angles that detected depend on ANSYS program was used to quantify the average Nusselt number. The results show that the bores will increase the heat transfer dispersion especially at rotation angle 30o. Moreover, the amount of residual mass flow inside the hollow puncher cylinder is the important parameter that used to increase the efficiency of heat dissipation. Besides, the bore with cylinder rotation angle larger than 0o help to prevent boundary layer to be separated and kept longer attaches. In recent years, post adoption studies that relate to technology usage after it has been adopted, have started to appear in various research outlets but its scope remains limited. A great majority of these studies examined the post adoption related issues from technical perspective. This paper is an attempt to draw more attention to post adoption stage from a management perspective, and to define and present an initial set of factors that are likely to be involved in achieving business process innovation at the post adoption stage. In this paper, we present and explain antecedents of business process innovation having its basis in innovation dynamics literature. In sum, academics and practitioner contributions and implications by this research is also highlighted

    Probing the link between oestrogen receptors and oesophageal cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human oesophageal carcinoma is considered to be one of the most aggressive malignancies and has a very poor prognosis. The incidence of oesophageal cancer shows a gender bias and is higher in males compared with females, the ratio between males and females varying from 3:1 to 7:1. This sex ratio is not entirely attributable to differences in the prevalence of known risk factors between the sexes. The potential role of oestrogen receptors (ER) in oesophageal cancer has been debated for several years but the significance of the receptors in this cancer remains unknown. Most of the work has been based on immunohistochemistry and has not been validated with other available techniques. The inconsistencies in the published literature on the link between ER expression and oesophageal cancer warrant a thorough evaluation of the potential role of ERs in this malignancy. Even the expression of the two ER isoforms, ERĪ± and ERĪ², and its implications for outcome of treatments in histological subtypes of oesophageal tumours is ill defined. The aim of this article is to provide updated information from the available literature on the current status of ER expression in oesophageal cancer and to discuss its potential therapeutic role.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>We performed a comprehensive literature search and analysed the results regarding ER expression in oesophageal tumours with special emphasis on expression of different oestrogen receptors and the role of sex hormones in oesophageal cancer. This article also focuses on the significance of the two main ER subtypes and mechanisms underlying the presumed male predominance of this disease.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We postulate that differential oestrogen receptor status may be considered a biomarker of poor clinical outcome based on tissue dedifferentiation or advanced stage of the disease. Further, if we can establish the importance of oestrogen and its receptors in the context of oesophageal cancer, then this may lead to a new future direction in the management of this malignancy.</p
