Reviving Mesopotamia: Genocide and the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in the Nationalist Music of William Daniel (1903-1988)

Once an illiterate Christian community suppressed by its Muslim neighbors, the Mesopotamian population in Persia benefitted from the American missionaries establishing schools and hospitals that helped their culture and language flourish in the late 1800s. Their survival as a people and a culture was threatened, however, when the Muslim Ottoman Empire began the Christian Genocide in Eastern Anatolia during World War I. As a survivor of these horrific events, composer William Daniel (1903-1988) felt the need to preserve and promote Mesopotamian culture through music, and as a Western trained musician, he successfully developed a nationalist style of music based on a combination of Mesopotamian folk music elements, which he called the “Mesopotamian timbre,” and Western European art music techniques. To better understand Daniel’s compositions, this study first situates Daniel within the history of the Mesopotamian people and of the Middle East and provides an explanation of Mesopotamian musical characteristics in contrast to their Muslim neighbors. This study concludes with the analyses of five of Daniel’s songs for voice and piano, “Shahrah” [Festival], “Dkhari d’Vaadaan” [Memories of Fatherland], “Shooshane d’Raghoole” [Lilly of the Valley], “Marganeeta” [Pearl], and “Ninveh” [Nineveh], showing how Daniel expressed and represented the social and political situation of the Mesopotamian people in his compositions

Athletic trainers (AT) incorporate diaphragm training techniques into treatment protocols; however, further understanding of the techniques’ purpose and application is needed. An investigation of clinical reasoning for use of diaphragm training and evaluation as therapeutic tools in rehabilitation was conducted. Research questions sought to identify AT perspectives and rationale for incorporating these techniques, explore how ATs gain knowledge, and identify evaluation and educational methods utilized in rehabilitation. A qualitative investigation employing a phenomenological approach was used to address the research questions. Procedures included convenience sampling, one-on-one semi structured interviews, transcription, and coding that led to overall theme development. Thirteen ATs from collegiate and rehabilitation clinic settings were interviewed. Trustworthiness was ensured using triangulation, member- and peer- checks. From the clinician narratives, three main themes emerged regarding the incorporation of diaphragm training into rehabilitative treatment: 1) to improve performance; 2) to correct disordered breathing; and 3) to decrease tension. Clinicians perceived the benefits of diaphragm training as advantageous as evidenced by patients’ observed outcomes. Techniques were learned through both formal and informal methods. Three primary evaluation methods were used to assess the diaphragm: 1) observation; 2) goniometry; and 3) palpation, while the main methods of patient education were: 1) instructional; 2) manual; and 3) biofeedback. This study provides current and future AT with an understanding of the utilization and application of diaphragm training

Are people inspired by The Big Bang Theory to find out more about Science? Results from focus group-based audience research

    No full text
In this paper we report some results of focus group research run with regular viewers of American sitcom The Big Bang Theory (2007-ongoing), regarding the representation of science and scientists in the program. Specifically we report evidence that The Big Bang Theory has stimulated audience members to find out more about science. The show stimulated just over a quarter of our focus group participants to find out more about the scientific concepts discussed by its characters, mainly through internet searching and browsing. In some cases the show encouraged people to feel less intimidated about engaging actively with science-related public media such as YouTube videos and public lectures about physics

When the silver screen fades to black : an analysis of black faces in film.

The Black Film Industry emerged with the goal of challenging the misrepresented images of African Americans that were promoted in early American Films. The Black Film making process promoted a centrality of stories told from an Afrocentric point of view. This thesis analyzes how Black Film has been defined over the last sixteen years and how it has impacted American society. Films that were made by or in collaboration with African American writers, directors, and producers with a focus on the African American community (its values, cultural aesthetics, and practices) and featuring an all or primarily Black cast were found to be indicative of Black Film. Black Films offer a more holistic representation of African Americans that challenge the common stereotypes and stereotypical roles that are often included in mainstream film productions. Furthermore, the stories within these films recount relatable common experiences of African Americans and embody African American cultural elements that celebrate Black Cultural Identity

I am interested in painting figures from direct observation as well as from photographs and memory in an invented theatrical interior space. My models act in an artificial stage to create the drama of a narrative. My figurative paintings present a rolling panoramic space that is manipulated over time. In addition, as a foreign student I had access to many sights in the new world once I came to the United States for the very first time. The expansiveness of the capital culture helped to develop the depth of my narratives in my art work
