In Arrentela, Seixal, some young rap fans have created an informal group called the Red Eyes Gang with the aim of expanding their musical projects and developing the sense of belonging among themselves. Driblando as fronteiras do tráfico
MarĂ© is a neighborhood composed of sixteen favelas (shanty towns), where there is one of the strongest cores of breakdancers in the city. Their interest in dance reformulated their friendship networks and made possible friendship between young people from opposite sites of the neighborhood. The relevance of this issue concerns the constraints on the customary life of the residents imposed by armed conflicts between drug trafficking gangs and increased by the truculent police action. MarĂ© breakdancers gathered to rehearse in a former factory of the neighborhood where they created sociabilities and performances that were able to unite them in a crew. In this environment of intense sociability, breakdancing practice and aesthetics renews their individuality challenging confinement devices that want to keep them anonymous
Performances on Planet Break: Dossier Ants and anthropologies
The “cyphers” are the privileged places of experiences exchange between the breakdancers, when young people of diferente crews and territories socialize through dance. From the filming of theses cyphers in a break dance event I problematize the performances of b-boys and b-girls, composed of a rich repertoire of movements, aesthetics, gestures and facial expressions. Experienced as liminal moments, these performance simulate sometimes symbolic confrontations of dramatized violences, sometimes feeling of belonging to the same urban culture, transforming a mass of dancers into a sense of community
A adesão à dança forneceu-lhes elementos
Maré, a Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood made up of seventeen favelas (shantytowns), possesses one of the city’s strongest groups of breakers – performers of a characteristic hip-hop dance (also known as breakdancers). In an
environment where armed confrontation between different drug-trafficking
factions, aggravated by harsh police action, creates boundaries that restrict
sociabilities and the right to come and go, they have managed to break with the
systems of segregation. Taking up the dance has given them symbolic elements to
interpret and act out in their daily lives, allowing them to broaden their network of
friends beyond the territorial limits imposed by the trafficking, which changes the
manner of their appropriation of the neighbourhood. In this process, they create
positive identities that work against the label of “slum-dweller” and challenge the
stigmas and devices that seek to confine them to the poverty-stricken districts in
isolation and anonymity
instituições do Estado.
The present thesis is a case study of youth cultures in urban settings and of their
socialization strategies and life styles. The field work was carried out in the borough of
Arrentela (Seixal), which provides the background to the collective action of the Red Eyes
Gang. The members of this crew, which are mostly descendants of African immigrants, try to
create positive identities (by refusing the discourses that represent them as “ugly, dirty and
mean”) in a setting characterized by poverty and stigmatization. This informal group uses rap
in a way as to challenge the dominant notions about their social roles, contributing to the production of new meanings to their identity as youngsters, poor and black. Rap serves as a
means of resistance to and demarcation from the official social standards and at the same
time develops social insertion alternatives in a setting characterized by the weakness of State
institutions. Even though the Red Eyes Gang members share identities and life styles, these
acquire different shapes. While there are important issues that unite them – otherwise the
existence of the group would make no sense – others differentiate them and are in dispute.
Therefore, there are different ways of being young and of using rap within the group, which
is in contradiction to the discourses that portray lower class youngsters from a homogeneous
and very little dynamic perspective
'We represent a slum, Mano': B-boys overcoming stereotypes
Mare, a neighborhood composed of sixteen favelas (shanty towns), home to
around 130.000 people. Breakdance first appeared when local Non-Governmental
Organizations started running sessions in schools. The number of dancers began
to grow and found new practitioners that started to belong to a breakdance circuit
in town. To become a b-boy or a b-girl (breakdancer) had a special meaning for
these young peoples´ lives because it was an effective way to conquer respect
and visibility. By using their b-boy identity they were looking for a singularity
that rejected stigmatizing representations they were usually associated with, just
for living in a favela and belonging to a disadvantaged social class. Their will to
participate in events and competitions urged their circulation through urban space,
allowing them to interact with several lifestyles. Impeccable shows on breakdance
events were their moments of glory; unforgettable moments that made them feel
loved and admired, part of an internationally respected culture. By winning dance
competitions, they were projecting their visibility, representing themselves as
power instead of weakness, jumping symbolic barriers that want them confined
to a label of “favelado”

social. In Maré, a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood, composed of sixteen favelas (shanty
towns), exists one of the strongest cores of breakdancers in the city. In an atmosphere where
armed conflicts between drug trafficking gangs and the truculent police action impose
constraints on the customary life of the residents, these dancers have managed to break the
dynamics of segregation.
Several times a week, over forty young people from Maré, gather round to practice
breakdancing in different places of the neighborhood. Without the control of teachers, they are
who delineate the purpose of the rehearsals (venues, rehearsing movements and music), in an
environment of intense sociability. The adherence to this dance encourages b-boys to cross the
borders of Maré. Enlarging, this way, their friendship networks and accessing to multiple
repertoires, knowledge and life style existing in the city itself.
The dancers from Maré have found in breakdancing (and in hip hop) a creative and
effective way to cultivate their subjectivity, sharing aesthetic, values and symbols that
contradict the atomization existing in every metropolitan area. It is an enjoyable and
collective way to seek recognition and dignity, becoming members of a prestigious global
culture. In this process, they create positive identities that challenge the stigma and
confinement devices that want to keep them isolated and anonymous in the so called "poverty
areas". Respected in the hip hop circuit, the Maré b-boys make use of performance and
imagination to defy symbolically the hegemony relations in order to subvert their place in the
social hierarchy
Deslocando fronteiras
This article aims to reflect upon the effects that have unfolded as a result of the relative democratization of access to digital media, especially in terms of the possibilities for economic and symbolic exchanges, among young people and residents of areas marked by processes of social precariousness in global metropolises. To this end, we analyze the way in which two collectives of rappers and audiovisual producers linked to peripheral regions of Lisbon and São Paulo make use of a variety of communication tools, both in urban spaces and in cyberspace
