Food Safety Program: Endrin Monitoring in the Mississippi River
Twelve successive monthly samplings and analyses of representative fish and shellfish and of mud and water from the lower Mississippi River showed neither a high concentration of endrin nor a time-ordered change in the concentration. Magnetostructural and magnetocaloric properties of bulk LaCrO3 system
We studied the magnetic properties of bulk LaCrO3; a GdFeO3-type distorted
perovskite, with a predominant antiferromagnetic phase transition at ~ 290 K.
The bulk LaCrO3 exhibits intrinsic weak ferromagnetism at room temperature,
which may arise due to the tilting of CrO6 octahedra, resulting in a non-zero
net magnetic moment, as confirmed from the magnetization measurements. A broad
magnetically-induced entropy change (-{\Delta}S) is observed with the maximum

High-pressure behavior of superconducting boron-doped diamond
This work investigates the high-pressure structure of freestanding
superconducting ( = 4.3\,K) boron doped diamond (BDD) and how it affects
the electronic and vibrational properties using Raman spectroscopy and x-ray
diffraction in the 0-30\,GPa range. High-pressure Raman scattering experiments
revealed an abrupt change in the linear pressure coefficients and the grain
boundary components undergo an irreversible phase change at 14\,GPa. We show
that the blue shift in the pressure-dependent vibrational modes correlates with
the negative pressure coefficient of in BDD. The analysis of x-ray
diffraction data determines the equation of state of the BDD film, revealing a
high bulk modulus of =51028\,GPa. The comparative analysis of
high-pressure data clarified that the sp carbons in the grain boundaries
transform into hexagonal diamond.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Study of Magnetic Properties of A_2B^'NbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, (BaSr): and B^'=Fe and Mn) double perovskites
We have studied the magnetic properties of Ba_2FeNbO_6 and Ba_2MnNbO_6. it is
seen that Ba_2FeNbO_6 is an antiferromagnet with a weak ferromagnetic behaviour
at 5K while Ba_2MnNbO_6 shows two magnetic transitions one at 45 K and the
other at 12K. Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements at room temperature
show that the Mn compound does not show any Jahn-Teller distortion. It is also
seen that the Neel temperature of the A_2FeNbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, BaSr) compounds do
not vary significantly. However variations in the average A-site ionic radius

Addressing healthcare needs of people living below the poverty line: a rapid assessment of the Andhra Pradesh Health Insurance Scheme
BACKGROUND: Families living below the poverty line in countries which do not have universal healthcare coverage are drawn into indebtedness and bankruptcy. The state of Andhra Pradesh in India established the Rajiv Aarogyasri Community Health Insurance Scheme (RACHIS) in 2007 with the aim of breaking this cycle by improving the access of below the poverty line (BPL) families to secondary and tertiary healthcare. It covered a wide range of surgical and medical treatments for serious illnesses requiring specialist healthcare resources not always available at district-level government hospitals. The impact of this scheme was evaluated by a rapid assessment, commissioned by the government of Andhra Pradesh. The aim of the assessment was to explore the contribution of the scheme to the reduction of catastrophic health expenditure among the poor and to recommend ways by which delivery of the scheme could be improved. We report the findings of this assessment. METHODS: Two types of data were used for the assessment. Patient data pertaining to 89 699 treatment requests approved by the scheme during its first 18 months were examined. Second, surveys of scheme beneficiaries and providers were undertaken in 6 randomly selected districts of Andhra Pradesh. RESULTS: This novel scheme was beginning to reach the BPL households in the state and providing access to free secondary and tertiary healthcare to seriously ill poor people. CONCLUSION: An integrated model encompassing primary, secondary and tertiary care would be of greater benefit to families below the poverty line and more cost-effective for the government. There is considerable potential for the government to build on this successful start and to strengthen equity of access and the quality of care provided by the scheme
