Assoc. 66 (1971), 641–643) have given a characterization of the Dirichlet distributions based on the properties of independence of various functions of the random variables (X1, X2, …, Xk) having a joint continuous distribution over the k-dimensional simplex: 0 ≤ x1 ≤ Σ xi ≤ 1. In this paper we provide a further characterization of this family of distributions essentially based on the properties of linear regression. Some extra conditions have been imposed and these are indeed indispensable

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy complicating a twin pregnancy at partum

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a rare syndrome characterized by acute left ventricular dysfunction with regional left ventricular ballooning, mimicking myocardial infarction. This condition is often described in post-menopausal women. Authors present a case in an elderly primi with twin gestation immediately after Cesarean surgery. We discussed her presentation, investigations, diagnosis, management and outcome. 35 year female, a primi with twin pregnancy developed chest pain and shortness of breath immediately after Cesarean surgery. Her Electrocardiograph was abnormal, and Echocardiogram demonstrated abnormal apical ballooning of the left ventricle and severe dysfunction. Cardiac enzymes were elevated and chest skiagram showed pulmonary edema. She was managed in the intensive care unit with oxygen supplementation, diuretics and inotropes. She made an excellent recovery with normalization of left ventricular ejection fraction within 8 days. During the six months follow up, she was asymptomatic and left ventricular function remained normal

Strong and weak chaos in weakly nonintegrable many-body Hamiltonian systems

We study properties of chaos in generic one-dimensional nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices comprised of weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators, by numerical simulations of continuous-time systems and symplectic maps. For small coupling, the measure of chaos is found to be proportional to the coupling strength and lattice length, with the typical maximal Lyapunov exponent being proportional to the square root of coupling. This strong chaos appears as a result of triplet resonances between nearby modes. In addition to strong chaos we observe a weakly chaotic component having much smaller Lyapunov exponent, the measure of which drops approximately as a square of the coupling strength down to smallest couplings we were able to reach. We argue that this weak chaos is linked to the regime of fast Arnold diffusion discussed by Chirikov and Vecheslavov. In disordered lattices of large size we find a subdiffusive spreading of initially localized wave packets over larger and larger number of modes. The relations between the exponent of this spreading and the exponent in the dependence of the fast Arnold diffusion on coupling strength are analyzed. We also trace parallels between the slow spreading of chaos and deterministic rheology.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure

Livelihood gains and ecological costs of NTFP dependence: assessing the roles of dependence, ecological knowledge and market structure in three contrasting human and ecological settings in south India

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) constitute the single largest determinant of livelihoods for scores of forest fringe communities and poor people in the tropics. In India over 50 million people are believed to be directly dependent upon NTFPs for their subsistence. However, such human dependence on NTFPs for livelihood gains (win) has most frequently been at a certain ecological cost (lose). If livelihoods are to be maintained, the existing ‘win-lose’ settings have to be steered to a ‘win-win’ mode, otherwise, there could be severe erosion of the biological resources and loss of livelihoods (‘lose-lose’). Examining the dependence of forest fringe communities on NTFPs at three sites in south India with contrasting human and ecological settings, three key factors (extent of dependence on NTFPs, indigenous ecological knowledge and market organization) are likely to constrain reaching the win-win situation. How these factors shape the ecological cost of harvesting NTFPs at the three sites is examined. Within the parameter space of these factors, it is possible to predict outcomes and associations that will conform to win-win or win-lose situations. Empirical data derived from the three study sites demonstrate the causality of the observed associations. The key for long-term livelihood gains lies in reducing the ecological cost. Certain interventions and recommendations that could optimize the balance between livelihood gains and ecological cost are proposed
