    Associations of reported bruxism with insomnia and insufficient sleep symptoms among media personnel with or without irregular shift work

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims were to investigate the prevalence of perceived sleep quality and insufficient sleep complaints, and to analyze whether self-reported bruxism was associated with perceptions of sleep, and awake consequences of disturbed sleep, while controlling confounding factors relative to poor sleep.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A standardized questionnaire was mailed to all employees of the Finnish Broadcasting Company with irregular shift work (n = 750) and to an equal number of randomly selected controls in the same company with regular eight-hour daytime work.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The response rate in the irregular shift work group was 82.3% (56.6% men) and in the regular daytime work group 34.3% (46.7% men). Self-reported bruxism occurred frequently (often or continually) in 10.6% of all subjects. Altogether 16.8% reported difficulties initiating sleep (DIS), 43.6% disrupted sleep (DS), and 10.3% early morning awakenings (EMA). The corresponding figures for non-restorative sleep (NRS), tiredness, and sleep deprivation (SLD) were 36.2%, 26.1%, and 23.7%, respectively. According to logistic regression, female gender was a significant independent factor for all insomnia symptoms, and older age for DS and EMA. Frequent bruxism was significantly associated with DIS (p = 0.019) and DS (p = 0.021). Dissatisfaction with current work shift schedule and frequent bruxism were both significant independent factors for all variables describing insufficient sleep consequences.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Self-reported bruxism may indicate sleep problems and their adherent awake consequences in non-patient populations.</p

    Improving the safety of autonomous driving by using Direct-to-Satellite connectivity: the case of Iridium and Starlink satellite constellations

    This work highlights vehicular communications using satellite connectivity and presents the related results from the Celtic-Next 5G-SAFE-Plus project. Satellites are used by automated vehicles to send and receive relevant situational awareness data of the area and act according to the received information. We present a genuine system performance analysis utilising real V2X messages used by automated vehicles to send and receive relevant situational awareness data. This is the first work that presents real vehicular message transmission via a satellite network. We also define and implement a simulation framework to study how low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites could support the operations. As latency of the end-to-end communication link is one of the most important quality parameters for safe and connected driving, we present measurement results of Iridium and Starlink constellations for vehicular data transfer. The results suggest that satellite connectivity can be used to improve road safety. However, routing in satellite networks should be greatly improved

    Attractiveness of women's body odors over the menstrual cycle: the role of oral contraceptives and receiver sex

    It is a long held assumption that women have concealed ovulation, which means that men do not know when women's menstrual cycles are in their most fertile phase. Recent empirical results have provided evidence that ovulation may not be totally concealed from pair-bonded males, but the generality and the mechanisms of the finding demand further study. To examine the possible adaptive value of the phenomenon, it is necessary to study whether the ability to detect ovulation is confined to males. We studied these questions in an experiment in which male and female raters rated the sexual attractiveness and intensity of T-shirts' odors worn by 42 women using oral contraceptives (pill users) and by 39 women without oral contraceptives (nonusers). Males rated the sexual attractiveness of nonusers highest at midcycle. However, female raters showed only a nonsignificant trend for this relationship. Neither sex rated attractiveness of the odors of pill users according to their menstrual cycle. The results indicate that men can use olfactory cues to distinguish between ovulating and nonovulating women. Furthermore, the contrasting results between pill users and nonusers may indicate that oral contraceptives demolish the cyclic attractiveness of odors. Together, these findings give more basis for the study of the role of odors in human sexual behavior.     Genetic and Environmental Factors Behind Foliar Chemistry of the Mature Mountain Birch

    Abstract Previous studies of mountain birch (Betula pubescens spp. czerepanovii) repeatedly have found differences between individual trees in herbivory-related traits, but rarely have yielded estimates of the additive genetic variation of these traits or of their relationship to habitat. We used thirtyyear-old birch half-sibs in a northern common garden to estimate the effect of genetics and local microhabitat on resistance-related traits. Genetic estimates of foliar chemistry have been studied only rarely with trees as old as these. Moth performance (Epirrita autumnata), rust (Melampsoridium betulinum) incidence levels, and the general level of natural herbivory damage to individual trees were used as direct measures of birch resistance. Chemical resistance-related traits in plant chemistry included 15 individual phenolics, 16 amino acids, and phenoloxidase activities in the foliage. We also followed birch phenology and growth. Our results show that the genotype of the birch was the most important determinant of phenolic composition and phenoloxidase activity, but that amino acid levels were best explained by the microhabitat of the birch. We also found that the phenology of the birch had a high heritability, although its variation was low. Our results reveal rich genetic variation in birch chemistry
