Launching a 3D Printing Program for Students: Recommendations and Best Practices for Libraries

The Georgia Southern University Libraries launched a 3D printing program for students in July 2022. Prior to launch, library employees at two of Georgia Southern University’s campuses investigated options for implementing safe, affordable, and sustainable 3D printing in existing academic libraries without retrofitting costly ventilation systems into existing facilities. This article describes the reasons why the Georgia Southern University Libraries thought that a 3D printing program could fulfill a service need for students across university colleges and departments and outlines some of the challenges, best practices, and unique innovations that the library’s employees experienced throughout the program launch process. The article makes several recommendations that other libraries, particularly those with limited resources, may take advantage of if they are considering launching their own 3D printing program

Copyright, 3D Printing, and the Value of Open Vetted 3D OER

Libraries are protected from copyright lawsuits when patrons make copies, as long as signage is posted and patrons make the copies themselves. But, unlike copying or printing in libraries, self-service 3D printing in libraries is unrealistic. 3D prints take hours to finish, and troubleshooting 3D printing problems takes skill and experience. Meanwhile, the top websites for finding CAD designs to download and 3D print are rampant with copyright infringement. This presentation provides an overview of the status of copyright for 3D printing, covers the tech of why 3D printing is different from printing and copying on paper, and advocates for libraries to screen and make available, in vetted repositories, high-quality 3D-printer CAD files

Georgia Southern’s Checkout Equipment: laptops, cameras, boardgames, and more. How we manage the checkout equipment program

Presentation given at the Georgia Libraries Conference, Macon, GA. Georgia Southern makes available a variety of equipment for student check out including a fleet of approximately 200 laptops, high-end digital cameras, tripods and lighting kits, video recording equipment, high-end microphones, and more. Equipment checkout is popular with students with equipment cycling in and out. Equipment also presents unique cataloging challenges. MARC was designed for books, and providing a good search for pulling statistics for non-traditional items can be a challenge. Items also may be returned needing repairs and Georgia Southern performs in-house repairs on laptops and other electronics. Participants will learn about ways to manage multipart checkout items, such as camera and laptops, a board game with many pieces, or a DSLR camera with lens and an SD card. Participants will learn about ways to better use the ILS, a system designed for books but allowing seamless checkout to students, to manage equipment. Participants will learn about ways Georgia Southern collects statistics on how materials are used and workflows and processes that allow for better statistics. Participants will learn about total costs of operating an equipment program, including commons repairs, average costs of parts to sustain each type of equipment, and employee time needed to perform in-house repairs

The Privacy Librarian is In! How Privacy Issues Affect Researchers and Libraries

Faced with an increasingly complex online environment through which libraries provide access to scholarly resources, librarians have found it difficult to educate users in protecting their personal information and online behaviors from inappropriate and sometimes unauthorized use while promoting the personalization services that users find beneficial. Modeled after the long-running Peanuts cartoon with Lucy offering advice for 5 cents, a panel composed of librarians, a vendor, and a publisher convened an interactive session that tackled key privacy issues in the researcher, vendor, and library framework. It began with the “Privacy Librarian” training a new library employee while a stream of patrons asked them privacy-related questions and research scenarios. After this tour through privacy issues, the panel highlighted the context in which these patron questions existed. Topics included privacy considerations in complex authentication schemas, website tracking, browser security, campus surveillance, and data privacy in third-party vendor accounts

Assessment of Trace Estrogenic Contaminants Removal by Coagulant Addition, Powdered Activated Carbon Adsorption and Powdered Activated Carbon/Microfiltration Processes

Increasing attention is being paid to health and environmental risk as a result of the presence of trace steroid estrogens in the effluent discharged from municipal sewage treatment plants. This paper focuses on assessment of removal of these trace compounds using 3H-labelled estrone as the model compound. Jar tests over a range of ferric chloride dosage and pH conditions showed that coagulation was ineffective in removal of estrone from secondary effluent. The experiments showed that the combination of PAC and microfiltration could be effective for removal of trace estrone from water. The rate and extent of estrone removal by PAC are functions of PAC dosage and retention time of PAC in the system. Mathematical analysis of the results using a homogeneous surface diffusion model (HSMD) indicates that the adsorption of estrone on PAC can be limited by film diffusion and internal surface diffusion. The surface and film mass transfer coefficients were determined to be 9.72 x 10-10 cm2/min and 1.963 cm/min, respectively, under the conditions used
