Growth Performance of Holstein Dairy Calves Supplemented with a Probiotic
Administration of antibiotics in both therapeutic
and sub-therapeutic doses has been the standard practice for dealing with pathogenic bacteria problems in
farm animals since the 1940s. Several types of antibiotics
are currently used to promote weight gain and feed
efficiency in domestic livestock. There is growing concern that the use of antibiotics as growth promoters may
result in the development of resistant populations of
pathogenic bacteria and, in turn, influence the therapeutic use of antibiotics. The indiscriminate and improper
use of antibiotics in food-producing animals could result
in the presence of residues in milk, meat, and other
animal food products consumed by humans. One possible alternative to antibiotics is the use of probiotics.
Probiotics can be defined as “live microbial feed supplements which beneficially affect the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance” (Fuller, 1989).
Probiotics introduce beneficial microorganisms into the
gut which act to maintain optimal conditions within the
gastrointestinal tract and inhibit the growth of pathogenic or other undesirable bacteria
Photoassociative Frequency Shift in a Quantum Degenerate Gas
We observe a light-induced frequency shift in single-photon photoassociative
spectra of magnetically trapped, quantum degenerate 7Li. The shift is a
manifestation of the coupling between the threshold continuum scattering states
and discrete bound levels in the excited-state molecular potential induced by
the photoassociation laser. The frequency shift is observed to be linear in the
laser intensity with a measured proportionality constant that is in good
agreement with theoretical predictions. The frequency shift has important
implications for a scheme to alter the interactions between atoms in a
Bose-Einstein condensate using photoassociation resonances.Comment: 3 figure
Enlarging and cooling the N\'eel state in an optical lattice
We propose an experimental scheme to favor both the realization and the
detection of the N\'eel state in a two-component gas of ultracold fermions in a
three-dimensional simple-cubic optical lattice. By adding three compensating
Gaussian laser beams to the standard three pairs of retroreflected lattice
beams, and adjusting the relative waists and intensities of the beams, one can
significantly enhance the size of the N\'eel state in the trap, thus increasing
the signal of optical Bragg scattering. Furthermore, the additional beams
provide for adjustment of the local chemical potential and the possibility to
evaporatively cool the gas while in the lattice. Our proposals are relevant to

Genomic islands of divergence in the Yellow Tang and the Brushtail Tang Surgeonfishes.
The current ease of obtaining thousands of molecular markers challenges the notion that full phylogenetic concordance, as proposed by phylogenetic species concepts, is a requirement for defining species delimitations. Indeed, the presence of genomic islands of divergence, which may be the cause, or in some cases the consequence, of speciation, precludes concordance. Here, we explore this issue using thousands of RAD markers on two sister species of surgeonfishes (Teleostei: Acanthuridae), Zebrasoma flavescens and Z. scopas, and several populations within each species. Species are readily distinguished based on their colors (solid yellow and solid brown, respectively), yet populations and species are neither distinguishable using mitochondrial markers (cytochrome c oxidase 1), nor using 5193 SNPs (pairwise Φst = 0.034). In contrast, when using outlier loci, some of them presumably under selection, species delimitations, and strong population structure follow recognized taxonomic positions (pairwise Φst = 0.326). Species and population delimitation differences based on neutral and selected markers are likely due to local adaptation, thus being consistent with the idea that these genomic islands of divergence arose as a consequence of isolation. These findings, which are not unique, raise the question of a potentially important pathway of divergence based on local adaptation that is only evident when looking at thousands of loci

Rapid Steel Tooling Via Solid Freeform Fabrication
With increasing part complexity and requirements for long production runs, tooling has
become an expensive process that requires long lead times to manufacture. This lengthens the
amount oftime from "art to part". Rapid tooling via stereolithography (SLA), filled epoxies, etc.
have been stopgap measures to produce limited prototyping runs from (10 to 500 parts). This
gives poor dimensional analysis and does not allow for limited production runs of 1000+ parts.
The method ofproducing prototype tooling with a powdered metal process has been developed
that produces tooling with a hardness greater than 35 HRC and total shrinkage less than 0.5%.
This tooling process manufactures production ready tooling that will perform extended cycle
runs (100,000+). Manufacturing ofthis tooling takes 1 to 2 weeks and will compare favorably
with production grade steel tooling. Originals drawn in 3D CAD can be used to prototype the
master that will allow for the production ofthe rapid metal tool set.
process starts with a rapid prototyped model made by whatever process is desired or
a machined master. For this paper a Sander's Model Maker II® rapid prototyping machine was
used to fabricate the model. After the model ofthe tool set is made, a silicone rubber negative is
cast around that model. After the silicone rubber model is made, a heated slurry ofmetal
powders and polymers is poured into the mold to create the green tool set. The tool set is left to
cool, and then removed from the silicone rubber mold. The tool set is then debound and sintered

A parametric shell analysis of the shuttle 51-L SRB AFT field joint
Following the Shuttle 51-L accident, an investigation was conducted to determine the cause of the failure. Investigators at the Langley Research Center focused attention on the structural behavior of the field joints with O-ring seals in the steel solid rocket booster (SRB) cases. The shell-of-revolution computer program BOSOR4 was used to model the aft field joint of the solid rocket booster case. The shell model consisted of the SRB wall and joint geometry present during the Shuttle 51-L flight. A parametric study of the joint was performed on the geometry, including joint clearances, contact between the joint components, and on the loads, induced and applied. In addition combinations of geometry and loads were evaluated. The analytical results from the parametric study showed that contact between the joint components was a primary contributor to allowing hot gases to blow by the O-rings. Based upon understanding the original joint behavior, various proposed joint modifications are shown and analyzed in order to provide additional insight and information. Finally, experimental results from a hydro-static pressurization of a test rocket booster case to study joint motion are presented and verified analytically
