    Politics and pilgrimage in North India: Varanasi between communitas and contestation

    The paper examines the merger of Hindu pilgrimages and the pace of religious tourism in India. The interacting and counteracting two sides of human life, sacred and profane, consequently turn into contestation, seduction and difference; however they meet at different levels in the formation of what the author terms \u27mosaicness\u27. Drawing on decades of experience in the heritage and pilgrimage fields, the author begins by showing the ways in which pilgrimage has been utilized by political groups to assert their own power, and argues that the growth and importance of pilgrimage-tourism may be related to an increased desire among Hindus to assert their identity against an ever more visible Muslim population. Despite such divisions, the author then argues that the creation of mosaicness at important shrines nevertheless may foster communitas, as revealed by the failure of terrorist attacks on Hindu temples in Varanasi to incite inter-religious violence. Last, he uses the case study of Sarnath to argue that the greater value accorded to tourism as an avenue for development reflects a perception that the marketing of pilgrimage sites and religious buildings offers a means of preserving and enhancing the value and visibility of the endangered remains of the past, but often it is marked by a low understanding of a site\u27s historical value and its contemporary relevance. While site managers have implemented revenue-raising plans to preserve the archaeological remains of Sarnath, they neglect to consider the contemporary importance of the site to practicing Buddhists. A better understanding of the multiple meanings of sacred destinations, and the conscious implementation of mechanisms to foster mosaicness, is urged

    V1432 Aql: a polar or an intermediate polar?

    We present evidence for a spin period of 4070 s in a magnetic cataclysmic variable V1432 Aql, classified as a polar. The evidence is based on the analysis of archival X-ray data obtained from a 25 ks long and uninterrupted observations with XMM-Newton. We also detect modulation of the X-ray flux with the orbital period, various harmonics of the spin period, and side-bands due to beating of the spin period with the orbital period. The energy-dependent light curves and hardness ratios show a very complex behaviour with both the spin phase and the orbital phase, indicating the presence of multiple absorbers of different densities. The observed characteristics suggest the presence of a disk in the system and accretion via a disk-overflow mechanism as is commonly observed in intermediate polars

    Intelligent Trust based Security Framework for Internet of Things

    Trust models have recently been proposed for Internet of Things (IoT) applications as a significant system of protection against external threats. This approach to IoT risk management is viable, trustworthy, and secure. At present, the trust security mechanism for immersion applications has not been specified for IoT systems. Several unfamiliar participants or machines share their resources through distributed systems to carry out a job or provide a service. One can have access to tools, network routes, connections, power processing, and storage space. This puts users of the IoT at much greater risk of, for example, anonymity, data leakage, and other safety violations. Trust measurement for new nodes has become crucial for unknown peer threats to be mitigated. Trust must be evaluated in the application sense using acceptable metrics based on the functional properties of nodes. The multifaceted confidence parameterization cannot be clarified explicitly by current stable models. In most current models, loss of confidence is inadequately modeled. Esteem ratings are frequently mis-weighted when previous confidence is taken into account, increasing the impact of harmful recommendations.                In this manuscript, a systematic method called Relationship History along with cumulative trust value (Distributed confidence management scheme model) has been proposed to evaluate interactive peers trust worthiness in a specific context. It includes estimating confidence decline, gathering & weighing trust      parameters and calculating the cumulative trust value between nodes. Trust standards can rely on practical contextual resources, determining if a service provider is trustworthy or not and does it deliver effective service? The simulation results suggest that the proposed model outperforms other similar models in terms of security, routing and efficiency and further assesses its performance based on derived utility and trust precision, convergence, and longevity

    Sentiment analysis of products’ reviews containing English and Hindi texts

    YesThe online shopping is increasing rapidly because of its convenience to buy from home and comparing products from their reviews written by other purchasers. When people buy a product, they express their emotions about that product in the form of review. In Indian context, it is found that the reviews contain Hindi text along with English. It is also found that most of the Hindi text contains opinionated words like bahut achha, bakbas, pesa wasool etc. We have tried to find out different Hindi texts appearing in product reviews written on Indian E-commerce portals. We have also developed a system which takes all those reviews containing Hindi as well as English texts and find out the sentiment expressed in that review for each attribute of the product as well as a final review of the product

    Authenticity of Geo-Location and Place Name in Tweets

    The place name and geo-coordinates of tweets are supposed to represent the possible location of the user at the time of posting that tweet. However, our analysis over a large collection of tweets indicates that these fields may not give the correct location of the user at the time of posting that tweet. Our investigation reveals that the tweets posted through third party applications such as Instagram or Swarmapp contain the geo-coordinate of the user specified location, not his current location. Any place name can be entered by a user to be displayed on a tweet. It may not be same as his/her exact location. Our analysis revealed that around 12% of tweets contains place names which are different from their real location. The findings of this research can be used as caution while designing location-based services using social media

    Five and Six Coordinated Complexes of Di and Trivalent Iron with Ligands Derived from Acidhydrazides and Acetylacetone

    Picolinic acid hydrazide(PH) and isonicotinic acidhydrazide (INH) react with acetylacetone in the presence of iron(II) and iron . (III) salts and give complexes of open chain tetradentate ligands through a template effect. The complexes are isolated and characterised as five and six-coordinated by the help of analyses, conductance, molecular weight, magnetic, Mossbauer, electronic and infrared spectral studies. Two molecules of PH or INH condense with a single acetylacetone moiety giving open chain tetradentate ligands. Attempts to isolate the ligand in the free state are, however, unsuccessful. The Ac(PH)2 coordinates through azomethine and pyridine nitrogens, while Ac(INHh does so through azomethine nitrogens and amide oxygens. Mossbauer spectra are consistent with their proposed geometries and reveal that iron is in the high-spin state. Various ligand field parameters are calculated using normalised spherical harmonic Hamiltonian theory and the amount of distortion is calculated in terms of DT/DQ.     Antibacterial and antifungal evaluation of some chalcogen bearing ligands, their transition and nontransition metal complexes

    Eight chalcogen bearing compounds, 3-(4-fluorophenyl telluro) propylamine (1), 3-(phenyl telluro)propylammonium acetate salt (2), 3-(phenyl telluro)propylacetamide (3) and α-(phenylseleno) acetic acid (4) (1-4 are ligands), [Ph2Sn(Cl).1](NO3 ) (5), [Ph3Sn.1](BPh4 ) (6), [ZnCl2 .2] (7) and [CdCl2.2] (8) (5-8 are complexes of 1 and 2) were synthesised and screened for antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis and the Gramnegative bacteria Escherchia coli. They were also tested for their antifungal activity against Candida tropicalis, Trichophyton rubrum and Asperegillus niger, by using the disk diffusion technique. Inhibition zones demonstrated that compounds 1–3 showed significant activity, due to the presence of N in the form of amine group however Compound 4 bearing an acidic group, shows higher activity against bacterial strains. Compounds 5–8 (having Sn, Zn and Cd in their framework) showed still higher activities, due to increase in the lipophilicity and easier penetration of the compounds into the outer cell wall of the microorganisms, which causes death due to cell membrane rupturing. Compounds 1–8 were most effective against E. coli (bacterial strains), as the cell wall of Gram-negative strains have thin outer lipid membrane, which is made up of lipopolysaccharides. These compounds showed slightly reduced antifungal activity, because the cell wall of fungi is made up of chitin, which is difficult to cross. It could be concluded, from the obtained results that the biological activity of compounds is essentially determined by the number and nature of the organic groups and central metal ion. The presence of NH2, COOH group as well as metal ion like Sn, Zn, Cd in the compounds leads to higher activity

    A deep multi-modal neural network for informative Twitter content classification during emergencies

    YesPeople start posting tweets containing texts, images, and videos as soon as a disaster hits an area. The analysis of these disaster-related tweet texts, images, and videos can help humanitarian response organizations in better decision-making and prioritizing their tasks. Finding the informative contents which can help in decision making out of the massive volume of Twitter content is a difficult task and require a system to filter out the informative contents. In this paper, we present a multi-modal approach to identify disaster-related informative content from the Twitter streams using text and images together. Our approach is based on long-short-term-memory (LSTM) and VGG-16 networks that show significant improvement in the performance, as evident from the validation result on seven different disaster-related datasets. The range of F1-score varied from 0.74 to 0.93 when tweet texts and images used together, whereas, in the case of only tweet text, it varies from 0.61 to 0.92. From this result, it is evident that the proposed multi-modal system is performing significantly well in identifying disaster-related informative social media contents
