The mountain iron diffusion program: Phase II South Vandenverg: Volume 3
A series of field diffusion experiments conducted at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California are discussed. These tests were designed to provide the necessary data from which an empirical equation, derived by multiple regression analysis, has been developed. This equation is to be used as a range safety tool in support of missile activities on the Air Force Western Test Range at the Sudden Ranch Launch Complex, SLC-6. The field experiments utilized a fluorescent pigment, zinc sulfide, U. S. Radium Corporation designation No. 2210, as a tracer. Appro ximately 500 aspirated filters, located at 1. 5 m above the ground, were installed along concentric arcs at 500, 800 and 1000 m from the source, and along roadways at greater downwind distances. These samplers provided measurements of the downwind time-integrated distribution of the tracer. These data were supplemented by: ground and aerial air concentration sampling; and, meteorological data from several sites. Raman spectroscopy of epitaxial graphene on a SiC substrate
The fabrication of epitaxial graphene (EG) on SiC substrate by annealing has
attracted a lot of interest as it may speed up the application of graphene for
future electronic devices. The interaction of EG and the SiC substrate is
critical to its electronic and physical properties. In this work, Raman
spectroscopy was used to study the structure of EG and its interaction with SiC
substrate. All the Raman bands of EG blue shift from that of bulk graphite and
graphene made by micromechanical cleavage, which was attributed to the
compressive strain induced by the substrate. A model containing 13 x 13
honeycomb lattice cells of graphene on carbon nanomesh was constructed to
explain the origin of strain. The lattice mismatch between graphene layer and
substrate causes the compressive stress of 2.27 GPa on graphene. We also
demonstrate that the electronic structures of EG grown on Si and C terminated
SiC substrates are quite different. Our experimental results shed light on the
interaction between graphene and SiC substrate that are critical to the future

Long term study of the seismic environment at LIGO
The LIGO experiment aims to detect and study gravitational waves using ground
based laser interferometry. A critical factor to the performance of the
interferometers, and a major consideration in the design of possible future
upgrades, is isolation of the interferometer optics from seismic noise. We
present the results of a detailed program of measurements of the seismic
environment surrounding the LIGO interferometers. We describe the experimental
configuration used to collect the data, which was acquired over a 613 day
period. The measurements focused on the frequency range 0.1-10 Hz, in which the
secondary microseismic peak and noise due to human activity in the vicinity of
the detectors was found to be particularly critical to interferometer
performance. We compare the statistical distribution of the data sets from the
two interferometer sites, construct amplitude spectral densities of seismic
noise amplitude fluctuations with periods of up to 3 months, and analyze the
data for any long term trends in the amplitude of seismic noise in this

Non-emphysematous chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with diabetes mellitus
Abstract
Background
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been classically divided into blue bloaters and pink puffers. The utility of these clinical subtypes is unclear. However, the broader distinction between airway-predominant and emphysema-predominant COPD may be clinically relevant. The objective was to define clinical features of emphysema-predominant and non-emphysematous COPD patients.
Methods
Current and former smokers from the Genetic Epidemiology of COPD Study (COPDGene) had chest computed tomography (CT) scans with quantitative image analysis. Emphysema-predominant COPD was defined by low attenuation area at -950 Hounsfield Units (LAA-950) ≥10%. Non-emphysematous COPD was defined by airflow obstruction with minimal to no emphysema (LAA-950 < 5%).
Results
Out of 4197 COPD subjects, 1687 were classified as emphysema-predominant and 1817 as non-emphysematous; 693 had LAA-950 between 5–10% and were not categorized. Subjects with emphysema-predominant COPD were older (65.6 vs 60.6 years, p < 0.0001) with more severe COPD based on airflow obstruction (FEV1 44.5 vs 68.4%, p < 0.0001), greater exercise limitation (6-minute walk distance 1138 vs 1331 ft, p < 0.0001) and reduced quality of life (St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire score 43 vs 31, p < 0.0001). Self-reported diabetes was more frequent in non-emphysematous COPD (OR 2.13, p < 0.001), which was also confirmed using a strict definition of diabetes based on medication use. The association between diabetes and non-emphysematous COPD was replicated in the ECLIPSE study.
Conclusions
Non-emphysematous COPD, defined by airflow obstruction with a paucity of emphysema on chest CT scan, is associated with an increased risk of diabetes. COPD patients without emphysema may warrant closer monitoring for diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia and vice versa.
