    From primal sketches to the recovery of intensity and reflectance representations

    A local change in intensity (edge) is a characteristic that is preserved when an image is filtered through a bandpass filter. Primal sketch representations of images, using the bandpass-filtered data, have become a common process since Marr proposed his model for early human vision. Here, researchers move beyond the primal sketch extraction to the recovery of intensity and reflectance representations using only the bandpass-filtered data. Assessing the response of an ideal step edge to the Laplacian of Gaussian (NAb/A squared G) filter, they found that the resulting filtered data preserves the original change of intensity that created the edge in addition to the edge location. Using the filtered data, they can construct the primal sketches and recover the original (relative) intensity levels between the boundaries. It was found that the result of filtering an ideal step edge with the Intensity-Dependent Spatial Summation (IDS) filter preserves the actual intensity on both sides of the edge, in addition to the edge location. The IDS filter also preserves the reflectance ratio at the edge location. Therefore, one can recover the intensity levels between the edge boundaries as well as the (relative) reflectance representation. The recovery of the reflectance representation is of special interest as it erases shadowing degradations and other dependencies on temporal illumination. This method offers a new approach to low-level vision processing as well as to high data-compression coding.     India is one of the largest fish producers in the world and contributes 5.43% to global fish production. India ranks second in fish production from aquaculture sector following China at top. Total fish production of India during 2010-11 was 8.42 million metric tones. Inland sector contributes about 5.2 million metric tones, whereas marine sector contributes 3.22 million metric tones. India has a long coastline of about 8,129 km and continental shelf area of 0.5 million km2. Declining catch rates in marine capture fisheries consequently created serious unemployment issues in rural coastal areas. Issues faced by marine fisheries sector in India have focused the attention of policy makers and rural fishers towards development of mariculture and coastal aquaculture activities as alternative livelihood option

    Coping Ability of Medical and Nursing Students: A Cause of Concern

    Background: Medical students today are subject to a variety of stress; academic, social, emotional or stress in the form of affliction of health during their stay at medical school. The physiological response to these depends on various factors including their inherent coping abilities. This study was designed to examine the coping ability of medical and nursing students at the time of admission to medical school. Materials and Methods: 42 medical and 34 nursing students volunteered for the study. They were administered the BAI questionnaire and classified as good and poor adjusters based on their score. Results: The study revealed an unsatisfactory overall coping ability to be prevalent among medical and nursing students. Conclusion: This study showed that there is a need for orientation and counselling of medical and nursing students at the start of college

    Lean manufacturing is one of the innovative manufacturing concepts being applied in many industries to avoid the wastages of resources and improving the quality of products and help the company to become more effective and productive. It also focuses on continuous improvements with the total involvement of all employees with optimum utilization of man power and machine by reducing idle time and reducing lead time with help of lean tools like value stream mapping and kaizen. This paper presents a case study carried out in a foundry division of an auto parts manufacturing industry, where lean tools are implemented for the defect reduction and productivity improvement. In this paper, a conceptualized implementation of total productive maintenance practices of lean tools: Kaizen or continuous improvement and value stream map in an auto parts industry are presented. The result shows improved performance in terms of average core rejections, sand leakage and air lock problem

    First results from the CAWSES-India Tidal Campaign

    The first CAWSES-India Tidal Campaign was conducted by the Indian scientific community during March–April 2006. The objectives of this campaign were: (1) To determine the characteristics of tides in the troposphere and lower stratosphere (0–20 km) and mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region (80–100 km), (2) to explore and identify what lower atmospheric processes drive middle atmospheric tides in the Indian continental region and (3) to provide information on those short-term variabilities of MLT tides that are likely to have an impact on the ionospheric variabilities and contribute to the upper atmospheric weather. Data sets from experiments conducted at the three low latitude radar sites, namely, Trivandrum (8.5° N, 76.9° E), Tirunelveli (8.7° N, 77.8° E) and Gadanki (13.5° N, 79.2° E) and fortnightly rocket launches from Thumba were made use of in this study. An important observational finding reported in this work is that the radar observations at Tirunelveli/Trivandrum indicate the presence of 15–20 day modulation of diurnal tide activity at MLT heights during the February–March period. A similar variation in the OLR fields in the western Pacific (120–160° longitude region) suggests a possible link between the observed tidal variabilities and the variations in the deep tropical convection through the nonmigrating tides it generates

    Parasites are encountered uncommonly in routine histopathologic practice. Among them, cestodes form a major bulk. Cysticercosis heads the list forming the bulk of cases followed by Hydatidosis and Sparganosis. Microscopic identification of inflammation with surrounding reactions along with other morphological features forms the mainstay of diagnosis of parasitic diseases on histopathology. Identification of the parasites on histopathological examination would reduce the cost-diagnosis ratio avoiding expensive serological investigation
