    Contributions of Freire's theory to dialogic education

    The present article discusses how Paulo Freire was ahead of his time with his theoretical contributions by reflecting on the author's groundbreaking insights, particularly those developed in his Pedagogy of the oppressed. To do so, the paper first introduces his Theory of Dialogical Action and the premises that explain how it established the theoretical grounds for some of the most relevant theoretical works in the Social Sciences such as Habermas' Theory of the Communicative Action developed more than a decade after Freire's work. The second part of the paper further explores the influence of the premises of the Dialogic Education, by reviewing the theoretical foundations of other major theoretical works and practical experiences that building on Freire's work and the centrality of dialogue in the educational process continue enabling the creation of future through transformative educational experiences. In so doing, the impact that the legacy of one of the most relevant authors in the history of education has had upon most relevant theoretical conceptualisations as well as a successful practical key experiences is further explained

    The Debate About the Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine: The Impact of an Evidence-Based Communicative Method on Increasing Free Choice

    Democratic access to scientific evidence contributes to the freedom of individuals to make informed decisions regarding scientific findings that affect their lives. In the case of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, a debate exists regarding preventing HPV infection that is not supported by evidence-based interventions. For instance, there are positions both in favor of and against an HPV vaccine that are not evidence-based, thus preventing women from deciding freely whether to be vaccinated. Based on a communicative approach, this article describes the use of communicative focus groups and communicative daily life stories in which the researcher shares up-to-date information on HPV prevention, particularly through vaccination and screening, with high-schoolgirls in an urban context in Spain. Through the focus groups and daily life stories, the young women evaluated the impact of evidence-based dialogues, which could increase their opportunities to make free choices regarding the HPV vaccine and other medicines

    Sociological Theory from Dialogic Democracy

    Despite the long dialogical tradition both in Eastern and Western societies, in recent years the social dialogical turn is more and more evident in many domains of life. Citizens increasingly demand to have a saying in the seeking of solutions for their problematics, and advocate for a more democratic approach to science that fosters the inclusion of all voices and enhances the agency of citizens in social transformation. Therefore, global scientific research is progressively more oriented towards co-creation as a means to ensure social impact. In this context, social theory can provide the theoretical foundations to better address the societal challenges of concern, as well as the mechanisms to properly design research oriented to produce social impact, such as communicative methodology, and to monitor and evaluate such impact. Social theory would then serve its ultimate goal: to contribute to the improvement of societies. Sociology was born as part of the democracies to provide citizens with elements of analysis that would make it possible for them to make their decisions with the prior evidence of the consequences of each option. After a process of democratization, we return to the original sense, but now in a more democratic situation

    Grassroots community actors leading the way in the prevention of youth violent radicalization

    Violence-free family ties, non-violent peers or attachment to society have been pointed out as protective factors against different types of extremism and violent radicalization by international literature. However, more detail needs to be provided about which specific aspects within these realms (friendship/family/community) are effective in challenging violence and how they operate in practice. Recent research conducted under the framework of the PROTON project (Horizon 2020) has analyzed the social and ethical impacts of counter-terrorism and organized crime policies in six European countries. In this article we discuss some identified common features among practices that, developed by organized actors operating at the local level (e.g.: grassroots-based associations, educational institutions, other type of organized networks for prevention, NGOs), are contributing to preventing youth violent radicalization, a phenomenon of growing concern in Europe and beyond. Standing on a solid rejection to violence, these shared features are the following: a bottom-up approach in setting allies with key stakeholders from the community or/and family members to intervene; the promotion of trustworthy and healthy friendship relationships; debunking the lure surrounding violent subjects ("false heroes") and violence in the different contexts, especially in the socioeducational one

    How Much Is One Life Worth? The Right to Equity Healthcare for Improving Older Patients' Health Infected by COVID-19

    Ageism has a tremendous negative impact on elderly persons and society. Discrimination against the elderly is a driver of health and social inequalities. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed new social and health challenges regarding resource scarcity and shortfalls. Under these difficult circumstances, discourses excluding, and discrimination against, older people have aroused. This article gathers evidence on hospital healthcare experiences of older people infected by COVID-19 during the pandemic outbreak in Spain and it analyzes elements that have positively influenced older patients' perceived health and well-being. We conducted nine qualitative in-depth interviews in Madrid one of the regions of Spain most affected by COVID-19 with older people that were hospitalized and recovered from COVID-19, family members of old patients infected with COVID-19, and nurses that attended infected older patients. Findings show the challenging experiences faced by older people who were hospitalized due to COVID-19, on the one hand, and the relevance of transformative aspects related to family relationships, solidarity actions, and humanized care that overcame age discrimination, favoring social and equity healthcare for the elderly on the other hand
