    Distributed precoding systems in multi-gateway multibeam satellites: regularization and coarse beamforming

    This paper deals with the problem of beamforming design in a multibeam satellite, which is shared by different groups of terminals -clusters-, each served by an Earth station or gateway. Each gateway precodes the symbols addressed to its respective users; the design follows an MMSE criterion, and a regularization factor judiciously chosen allows to account for the presence of mutually interfering clusters, extending more classical results applicable to one centralized station. More importantly, channel statistics can be used instead of instantaneous channel state information, avoiding the exchange of information among gateways through backhaul links. The on-board satellite beamforming weights are designed to exploit the degrees of freedom of the satellite antennas to minimize the noise impact and the interference to some specific users. On-ground beamforming results are provided as a reference to compare the joint performance of MMSE precoders and on-board beamforming network.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref.     An Intelligent Algorithm for Resource Sharing and Self-Management of Wireless-IoT-Gateway

    [EN] Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly gaining momentum in the scenario of telecommunications. Conventional networks allow for interactivity and data exchange, but these networks have not been designed for the new features and functions of IoT devices. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to share common recourse among Things, that is, between different types of smart appliances. This proposal is based on an IoT network with centralized management architecture, controlled by an Artificial Intelligence (AI). The AI controller uses an algorithm which based on machine learning techniques, collecting information on the network through an information protocol. Every smart thing that connects to the network is announces through a protocol message called Function and Service Discovery Protocol (DFSP) over the queued message telemetry transport protocol (MQTT). The proposed algorithm is responsible for discovering and allocating resources in the networks.     Holographic Lens Resolution Using the Convolution Theorem

    The similarity between object and image of negative asymmetrical holographic lenses (HLs) stored in a low-toxicity photopolymer has been evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Asymmetrical experimental setups with negative focal lengths have been used to obtain HLs. For this purpose, the resolution of the HLs was calculated using the convolution theorem. A USAF 1951 test was used as an object and the impulse responses of the HLs, which in this case was the amplitude spread function (ASF), were obtained with two different methods: using a CCD sensor and a Hartmann Shack (HS) wavefront sensor. For a negative asymmetrically recorded HL a maximum resolution of 11.31 lp/mm was obtained. It was evaluated at 473 nm wavelength.     Holographic solar concentrators stored in an eco-friendly photopolymer

    In this work it is shown the first characterization of holographic solar concentrators recorded in Biophotopol - one of the greenest photopolymers. Biophotopol is an acrylate-based and water-soluble photopolymer with good recycling properties. The composition of this photopolymer and their thickness are easily changeable, which implies an important advantage vs. others commercialized photopolymers. Good diffraction efficiency and wide acceptance angles are achieved on phase volume transmission holograms by using an optimized composition and thin layers. A curing stage with a white incoherent light has been performed to obtain high temporal stability together with a good diffraction efficiency.     CCD and Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor to analyse holographic lens resolution

    Nowadays, the study and optimization of volume holographic lenses (HLs) stored in low-toxicity photopolymers have a great interest. HLs are now a component of optical imaging systems that are mostly used in head-mounted displays for virtual and augmented reality or as non-image systems in light deflectors and concentrators. One of the most important parameters used when working with imaging systems is the resolution of the optical system. In this work, the similarity between the object and image of negative asymmetrical HLs stored in a low-toxicity photopolymer named Biophotopol has been evaluated theoretically and experimentally. For this purpose, the resolution of the HLs was calculated using the Convolution Theorem.     Amnesia is a deficit of memory function that can result from trauma, stress, disease, drug use, or ageing. Though efforts are made to prevent and treat the various causes of amnesia, there remains no treatment for the symptom of memory loss itself. Because the defining feature of amnesia is an inability recall memory, any given case may be due to the possibility that the memory is damaged, or the alternative that it is present but irretrievable (Squire, 1982). Discriminating between these two scenarios would be of scientific value, because the neurobiology of memory formation is anchored in experimental amnesia. Pathological cases of amnesia that are due to retrieval deficits may in principal be treatable rather than merely preventable. Amnesia could be attributed to a retrieval deficit if the ostensible ‘lost’ memory could be evoked through brain stimulation.     Interaction of Acinetobacter baumannii with Human Serum Albumin: Does the Host Determine the Outcome?

    Acinetobacter baumannii has become a serious threat to human health due to its extreme antibiotic resistance, environmental persistence, and capacity to survive within the host. Two A. baumannii strains, A118 and AB5075, commonly used as model systems, and three carbapenem-resistant strains, which are becoming ever more dangerous due to the multiple drugs they can resist, were exposed to 3.5% human serum albumin (HSA) and human serum (HS) to evaluate their response with respect to antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, and quorum sensing, all features responsible for increasing survival and persistence in the environment and human body. Expression levels of antibiotic resistance genes were modified differently when examined in different strains. The cmlA gene was upregulated or downregulated in conditions of exposure to 3.5% HSA or HS depending on the strain. Expression levels of pbp1 and pbp3 tended to be increased by the presence of HSA and HS, but the effect was not seen in all strains. A. baumannii A118 growing in the presence of HS did not experience increased expression of these genes. Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes were also expressed at higher or lower levels in the presence of HSA or HS. Still, the response was not uniform; in some cases, expression was enhanced, and in other cases, it was tapered. While A. baumannii AB5075 became more susceptible to rifampicin in the presence of 3.5% HSA or HS, strain A118 did not show any changes. Expression of arr2, a gene involved in resistance to rifampicin present in A. baumannii AMA16, was expressed at higher levels when HS was present in the culture medium. HSA and HS reduced biofilm formation and production of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactone, a compound intimately associated with quorum sensing. In conclusion, HSA, the main component of HS, stimulates a variety of adaptative responses in infecting A. baumannii strains.Fil: Pimentel, Camila.     Characterizing the rate of spread of large wildfires in emerging fire environments of northwestern Europe using visible infrared imaging radiometer suite active fire data

    In recent years fires of greater magnitude have been documented throughout northwest Europe. With several climate projections indicating future increases in fire activity in this temperate area, it is imperative to identify the status of fire in this region. This study unravels unknowns about the state of the fire regime in northwest Europe by characterizing one of the key aspects of fire behavior, the rate of spread (ROS). Using an innovative approach to cluster Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) hotspots into fire perimeter isochrones to derive ROS, we identify the effects of land cover and season on the rate of spread of 102 landscape fires that occurred between 2012 and 2022. Results reveal significant differences between land cover types, and there is a clear peak of ROS and burned area in the months of March and April. Median ROS within these peak months is approximately 0.09 km h−1 during a 12 h overpass, and 66 % of the burned area occurs in this spring period. Heightened ROS and burned area values persist in the bordering months of February and May, suggesting that these months may present the extent of the main fire season in northwest Europe. Optical quality metrics has been used to test the holographic lenses.
