The Effect of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivations on Academics' Entrepreneurial Intention

This work investigates entrepreneurial intentions among academic scientists. Drawing from the literature on entrepreneurial behavior, it contributes to delineate the differences in motivations that are correlated with entrepreneurial intention to those that are considered to be linked to entrepreneurial behaviors. By disentangling the concept of motivations in its ultimately basic constructs of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, we investigate how these two different types of motivations are related to the formation of entrepreneurial intention at the level of academic scientists. Through a survey conducted at the University of Ferrara—one of the leading universities in Italy in terms of technology transfer and scientific production—findings reveal that while academic entrepreneurial intention seems to be mostly driven by intrinsic motivations, the effect of extrinsic motivations, which are regarded as a main antecedent of entrepreneurial behavior among scientists, are largely mediated by academic positions, work environment and different combinations of these two factors. This work therefore highlights the importance of social norms in the investigation of entrepreneurial intention in academia

This article describes questionnaire data on Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) entrepreneurship in Italy. The data includes (i) information recently collected via a questionnaire survey on Ph.D. students; (ii) background information on Italian academic institutions attended by students. We present here some descriptive statistics of the variables included in the dataset. The database includes the responses of 906 students. Students provided information on their employment condition, on their family background and opinions on the Ph.D. course and the institution they attended. Information on regional characteristics and on university policies are also included

The regional innovation system in Emilia Romagna

In the 90’s globalisation introduced new elements on the competitive scene. The appearance of new competition in the production of lower level technology, the making of technologies and the increase of commerce in new markets needed a qualitative leap in organisation and internationalization strategies. Bigger companies faced the difficulties connected to this new competitive picture and core reorganisation was based on innovative technology. Smaller companies relied prevalently on operational flexibility aiming at productions being less standardised. This led to the opening of a growing gap in productivity of the bigger companies. The Emilia-Romagna Region in 2000 arranged to re-plan its perception of local development, going beyond its districts approach asserting itself under national law n.317/1991. With such a law the economic importance would be recognised by industrial areas and would let the Region identify these industrial areas in order to allow groups of operating businesses in these areas to benefit from this law. Such an approach was furthermore strengthened by the national law n.140 in 1999. This law distinguished local productive systems at a national level, a general concentration of small to medium sized businesses favouring first time aggregation and industrial areas. Evidence shows a strong specialisation of businesses in every area enabling the union of more complex communal services

How does academia influence Ph.D. entrepreneurship? New insights on the entrepreneurial university

    No full text
This work investigates the factors that affect the propensity of Ph.D. students to create their own firms. The paper uses data from the responses to 9062 questionnaires, administered in 2016 to Ph.D. students in Italy, focusing on five factors: the entrepreneurial environment; the existence of university policy frameworks dedi- cated to entrepreneurship; the degree of applicability of the doctoral research to an industry context; student- industry collaboration during the doctoral study period; inclusion in the Ph.D. programme of courses on en- trepreneurship. The empirical evidence shows that both university- and course-level factors have a fundamental impact on students’ decisions to start new ventures
