    Coronary thrombosis: a study of 128 cases with special reference to its relationship to angina pectoris

    It is observed from this study that angina pectoris and coronary thrombosis are the different phases of the same process being caused by anoxaemia of heart muscle. The underlying factor in both the conditions 154. excluding the precipitating factors is the same i.e. atherosclerosis of coronary arteries Atheromatous changes in angina pectoris however are more or less of a uniform nature, resulting usually in narrowing of the lumen of these vessels, whereas in coronary thrombosis the changes are generally of a patchy type with or without much narrowing of the caliber of coronary arteries. The precipitating factors no doubt are different, but while coronary thrombosis is caused in a person with Sclerotic coronary arteries at rest, Angina pectoris results in the same individual in excitement and with exertion

    Is intra articular injection of triamcinolone acetonide a better option in management for primary osteoarthritis knee than methylprednisolone acetate?

    Background: Intra articular corticosteroid injections are commonly using in management of osteroarthritis of knee. Most commonly used ones are methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) and triamcinolone acetonide (TA). The aim of our study is to compare the efficacy of these two agents in treating osteoarthritis of knee and find out if any one agent is superior to other if so.Methods: Selected patients with symptomatic OA knee with kellgren-Lawrence grade III were given intra articular steroid injections (40 mg TA or 40 mg MPA) and were reassessed on day 0, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. VAS and Knee society scores were calculated using questionnaire method and compared the scores.Results: The VAS and KSS was improved significantly on day 0,1 month and 6th month and it was found to be increased at 6th month in both the groups and the values were comparable in both the groups. The effect of both the agents last for 3-6 months and the effects found to be maximum at 1st month and the effects starts to wean off at the end of 6 months in both the groups.Conclusions: Both methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) and triamcinolone acetonide (TA) are equally effective in reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis of knee and thereby improving their functional ability upto 6 months

    Local properties of vigilance states: EMD analysis of EEG signals during sleep-waking states of freely moving rats

    Understanding the inherent dynamics of the EEG associated to sleep-waking can provide insights into its basic neural regulation. By characterizing the local properties of the EEG using power spectrum, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert-spectral analysis, we can examine the dynamics over a range of time-scales. We analyzed rat EEG during wake, NREMS and REMS using these methods. The average instantaneous phase, power spectral density (PSD) of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and the energy content in various frequency bands show characteristic changes in each of the vigilance states. The 2nd and 7th IMFs show changes in PSD for wake and REMS, suggesting that those modes may carry wake- and REMS-associated cognitive, conscious and behavior-specific information of an individual even though the EEG may appear similar. The energy content in θ2 (6Hz-9Hz) band of the 1st IMF for REMS is larger than that of wake. The decrease in the phase function of IMFs from wake to REMS to NREMS indicates decrease of the mean frequency in these states, respectively. The rate of information processing in waking state is more in the time scale described by the first three IMFs than in REMS state. However, for IMF5-IMF7, the rate is more for REMS than that for wake. We obtained Hilbert-Huang spectral entropy, which is a suitable measure of information processing in each of these state-specific EEG. It is possible to evaluate the complex dynamics of the EEG in each of the vigilance states by applying measures based on EMD and Hilbert-transform. Our results suggest that the EMD based nonlinear measures of the EEG can provide useful estimates of the information possessed by various oscillations associated with the vigilance states. Further, the EMD-based spectral measures may have implications in understanding anatamo-physiological correlates of sleep-waking behavior and clinical diagnosis of sleep-pathology

    The morphological and phenological performance of different cotton genotypes under different plant density

    The field experiment conducted with different plant density and different Genotypes showed significant differences in their morphological characters and phenological characters. Among the genotypes, AKA-7 possessed higher plant height (116.4 cm), No. of sympodia (19.27 plant-1) and leaf area index (3.628) compared to other geno-types but leaf area (33.02 dm-2) and dry matter weight (103.21g/plant) were recorded higher with genotype Balwan. However, Normal plant density (100%) was registered higher plant height (102.6 cm), no of sympodia (17.33 plant-1), leaf area (27.02 dm2) and dry matter weight (58.13 g/plant) but higher leaf area index (3.430) was recorded with higher plant density (200%). Among the genotypes, AKH-081 was comparatively earlier in phenological characters i.e. first square (47.9 days), first flower (67.9 days), first boll burst (116.1 days), first picking (128.7 days) and final picking (178 days). However, Higher planting density (200%) was recorded earlier in first square (49.3 day), first flower (67.8 days), first boll burst (116.9 days), first picking (130.6 day) and final picking (179.7 days). On the basis of this experiment, genotype Balwan and normal planting density level (100%) recorded higher morphological development wherever phenological development recorded earlier with the each respective phenophase in the Gen-otype AKH-081 and highest planting density level (200%)
