Properties of Hot Stars in the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC5253 from ISO Spectroscopy
ISO-SWS spectroscopy of the WR galaxy NGC5253 is presented, and analysed to
provide estimates of its hot young star population. Our approach differs from
previous investigations in that we are able to distinguish between the regions
in which different infrared fine-structure lines form, using complementary
ground-based observations. The high excitation nebular [SIV] emission is formed
in a very compact region, which we attribute to the central super-star-nucleus,
and lower excitation [NeII] nebular emission originates in the galactic core.
We use photo-ionization modelling coupled with the latest theoretical O-star
flux distributions to derive effective stellar temperatures and ionization
parameters of Teff>38kK, logQ=8.25 for the compact nucleus, with Teff=35kK,
logQ<8 for the larger core. Results are supported by more sophisticated
calculations using evolutionary synthesis models. We assess the contribution
that Wolf-Rayet stars may make to highly ionized nebular lines (e.g. [OIV]).
From our Br(alpha) flux, the 2" nucleus contains the equivalent of
approximately 1000 O7V star equivalents and the starburst there is 2-3Myr old;
the 20" core contains about 2500 O7V star equivalents, with a representative
age of 5Myr. The Lyman ionizing flux of the nucleus is equivalent to the 30
Doradus region. These quantities are in good agreement with the observed mid-IR
dust luminosity of 7.8x10^8 L(sun) Since this structure of hot clusters
embedded in cooler emission may be common in dwarf starbursts, observing a
galaxy solely with a large aperture may result in confusion. Neglecting the
spatial distribution of nebular emission in NGC5253, implies `global' stellar
temperatures (or ages) of 36kK (4.8Myr) and 39kK (2.9 or 4.4Myr) from the

Reliability of prenatal detection of X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia by tooth germ sonography
Objective
In X‐linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), dysfunction of ectodysplasin A1 (EDA1) due to EDA mutations results in malformation of hair, teeth, and sweat glands. Hypohidrosis, which can cause life‐threatening hyperthermia, is amenable to intrauterine therapy with recombinant EDA1. This study aimed at evaluating tooth germ sonography as a noninvasive means to identify affected fetuses in pregnant carrier women.
Methods
Sonography, performed at 10 study sites between gestational weeks 18 and 28, led to the diagnosis of XLHED if fewer than six tooth germs were detected in mandible or maxilla. The assessment was verified postnatally by EDA sequencing and/or clinical findings. Estimated fetal weights and postnatal weight gain of boys with XLHED were assessed using appropriate growth charts.
Results
In 19 of 38 sonographic examinations (23 male and 13 female fetuses), XLHED was detected prenatally. The prenatal diagnosis proved to be correct in 37 cases; one affected male fetus was missed. Specificity and positive predictive value were both 100%. Tooth counts obtained by clinical examination corresponded well with findings on panoramic radiographs. We observed no weight deficits of subjects with XLHED in utero but occasionally during infancy.
Conclusion
Tooth germ sonography is highly specific and reliable in detecting XLHED prenatally
Bicuspid and unicuspid aortic valves: Different phenotypes of the same disease? Insight from the GenTAC Registry
BackgroundUnicuspid aortic valve (UAV) is a rare disorder, often difficult to distinguish from bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). BAV and UAV share valve pathology such as the presence of a raphe, leaflet fusion, aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation, and/or ascending aortic dilatation, but a comprehensive echocardiographic comparison of patients with UAV and BAV has not been previously performed.MethodsWe investigated UAV and BAV patients at an early stage of disease included in GenTAC, a national registry of genetically related aortic aneurysms and associated cardiac conditions. Clinical and echocardiographic data from the GenTAC Registry were compared between 17 patients with UAV and 17 matched‐controls with BAV.ResultsBaseline characteristics including demographics, clinical findings including family history of BAV and aortic aneurysm/coarctation, and echocardiographic variables were similar between BAV and UAV patients; aortic stenosis was more common and more severe in patients with UAV. This was evidenced by higher mean and peak gradient, smaller aortic valve area, and more advanced valvular degeneration (all P < .05). There were no significant differences in aortic dimensions, with a similar pattern of enlargement of the ascending aorta.ConclusionsThe similar baseline characteristics with more accelerated aortic valve degeneration and stenosis suggest that UAV represents an extreme in the spectrum of BAV syndromes. Cardiovascular Outcomes in Aortopathy: GenTAC Registry of Genetically Triggered Aortic Aneurysms and Related Conditions.
BACKGROUND: The GenTAC (Genetically Triggered Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm and Cardiovascular Conditions) Registry enrolled patients with genetic aortopathies between 2007 and 2016.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare age distribution and probability of elective surgery for proximal aortic aneurysm, any dissection surgery, and cardiovascular mortality among aortopathy etiologies.
METHODS: The GenTAC study had a retrospective/prospective design. Participants with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) with aneurysm (n = 879), Marfan syndrome (MFS) (n = 861), nonsyndromic heritable thoracic aortic disease (nsHTAD) (n = 378), Turner syndrome (TS) (n = 298), vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) (n = 149), and Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) (n = 121) were analyzed.
RESULTS: The 25% probability of elective proximal aortic aneurysm surgery was 30 years for LDS (95% CI: 18-37 years), followed by MFS (34 years; 95% CI: 32-36 years), nsHTAD (52 years; 95% CI: 48-56 years), and BAV (55 years; 95% CI: 53-58 years). Any dissection surgery 25% probability was highest in LDS (38 years; 95% CI: 33-53 years) followed by MFS (51 years; 95% CI: 46-57 years) and nsHTAD (54 years; 95% CI: 51-61 years). BAV experienced the largest relative frequency of elective surgery to any dissection surgery (254/33 = 7.7), compared with MFS (273/112 = 2.4), LDS (35/16 = 2.2), or nsHTAD (82/76 = 1.1). With MFS as the reference population, risk of any dissection surgery or cardiovascular mortality was lowest in BAV patients (HR: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.08-0.18; HR: 0.13; 95%: CI: 0.06-0.27, respectively). The greatest risk of mortality was seen in patients with vEDS.
CONCLUSIONS: Marfan and LDS cohorts demonstrate age and event profiles congruent with the current understanding of syndromic aortopathies. BAV events weigh toward elective replacement with relatively few dissection surgeries. Nonsyndromic HTAD patients experience near equal probability of dissection vs prophylactic surgery, possibly because of failure of early diagnosis

Ultraselective, Ultrahigh Resolution 1D TOCSY
Solution state 1H NMR spectroscopy provides valuable insights into molecular structure and conformation. However, when the spectrum exhibits severe signal overlap, it hampers the extraction of key structural information. Here, an ultraselective, ultrahigh resolution TOCSY method is introduced that greatly reduces spectral complexity, allowing the extraction of previously inaccessible spectral information. It combines the recently developed GEMSTONE excitation with homonuclear decoupling to provide highly simplified through-bond correlation 1D 1H NMR spectra, showing all signals within the selected spin system as singlets. The new method can greatly facilitate the analysis of mixtures, as shown here for a mixture of Cinchona alkaloids (popular catalysts in asymmetric synthesis) and a mixture of glucocorticoids (used for treating conditions such as asthma)
Origin of acidic surface waters and the evolution of atmospheric chemistry on early Mars
Observations from in situ experiments and planetary orbiters have shown that the sedimentary rocks found at Meridiani Planum, Mars were formed in the presence of acidic surface waters. The water was thought to be brought to the surface by groundwater upwelling, and may represent the last vestiges of the widespread occurrence of liquid water on Mars. However, it is unclear why the surface waters were acidic. Here we use geochemical calculations, constrained by chemical and mineralogical data from the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, to show that Fe oxidation and the precipitation of oxidized iron (Fe^(3+)) minerals generate excess acid with respect to the amount of base anions available in the rocks present in outcrop. We suggest that subsurface waters of near-neutral pH and rich in Fe^(2+) were rapidly acidified as iron was oxidized on exposure to O_2 or photo-oxidized by ultraviolet radiation at the martian surface. Temporal variation in surface acidity would have been controlled by the availability of liquid water, and as such, low-pH fluids could be a natural consequence of the aridification of the martian surface. Finally, because iron oxidation at Meridiani would have generated large amounts of gaseous H_2, ultimately derived from the reduction of H_2O, we conclude that surface geochemical processes would have affected the redox state of the early martian atmosphere
