Selection Cuttings for the Small Forest Owner
The purpose of this publication is to indicate to owners of small forests methods of harvesting wood and timber and developing future timber crops which .are likely to prove more profitable than those followed in the past. Cutting practices here described have been applied for some years in the Eli Whitney Forest, New Haven, Conn., where forest areas in various stages of treatment can be ·seen
Strategic Behavior, Real Rigidities, and Production Coordination Failures
This paper develops a real-exchange production-coordination model in which price-setting firms produce complementary inputs that are converted into and traded for a final good produced by a competitive sector. A rigid real-price regime is shown to be consistent with both rational firm behavior and welfare-ranked Nash equilibria, although not with a Pareto optimal equilibrium. The model demonstrates the existence of non-unique, sustainable real-price sets for various coordinated-production levels with a unique price set at a sustainable maximum output level. Without both production and price coordination, the model may produce a Nash equilibrium at a low output level.Prices
A Persistent Simulation Environment for Autonomous Systems
The age of Autonomous Unmanned Aircraft Systems (AUAS) is creating new challenges for the accreditation and certification requiring new standards, policies and procedures that sanction whether a UAS is safe to fly. Establishing a basis for certification of autonomous systems via research into trust and trustworthiness is the focus of Autonomy Teaming and TRAjectories for Complex Trusted Operational Reliability (ATTRACTOR), a new NASA Convergent Aeronautics Solution (CAS) project. Simulation Environments to test and evaluate AUAS decision making may be a low-cost solution to help certify that various AUAS systems are trustworthy enough to be allowed to fly in current general and commercial aviation airspace. NASA is working to build a peer-to-peer persistent simulation (P3 Sim) environment. The P3 Sim will be a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) environment were AUAS avatars can interact with a complex dynamic environment and each other. The focus of the effort is to provide AUAS researchers a low-cost intuitive testing environment that will aid training for and assessment of decisions made by autonomous systems such as AUAS. This presentation focuses on the design approach and challenges faced in development of the P3 Sim Environment is support of investigating trustworthiness of autonomous systems

14C-Cobalamin Absorption from Endogenously Labeled Chicken Eggs Assessed in Humans Using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry.
Traditionally, the bioavailability of vitamin B-12 (B12) from in vivo labeled foods was determined by labeling the vitamin with radiocobalt (57Co, 58Co or 60Co). This required use of penetrating radioactivity and sometimes used higher doses of B12 than the physiological limit of B12 absorption. The aim of this study was to determine the bioavailability and absorbed B12 from chicken eggs endogenously labeled with 14C-B12 using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). 14C-B12 was injected intramuscularly into hens to produce eggs enriched in vivo with the 14C labeled vitamin. The eggs, which provided 1.4 to 2.6 μg of B12 (~1.1 kBq) per serving, were scrambled, cooked and fed to 10 human volunteers. Baseline and post-ingestion blood, urine and stool samples were collected over a one-week period and assessed for 14C-B12 content using AMS. Bioavailability ranged from 13.2 to 57.7% (mean 30.2 ± 16.4%). Difference among subjects was explained by dose of B12, with percent bioavailability from 2.6 μg only half that from 1.4 μg. The total amount of B12 absorbed was limited to 0.5-0.8 μg (mean 0.55 ± 0.19 μg B12) and was relatively unaffected by the amount consumed. The use of 14C-B12 offers the only currently available method for quantifying B12 absorption in humans, including food cobalamin absorption. An egg is confirmed as a good source of B12, supplying approximately 20% of the average adult daily requirement (RDA for adults = 2.4 μg/day)
Passive, broadband and low-frequency suppression of laser amplitude noise to the shot-noise limit using hollow-core fibre
We use hollow-core fibre to preserve the spectrum and temporal profile of
picosecond laser pulses in CBD to suppress 2.6 dB of amplitude noise at MHz
noise frequencies, to within 0.01 dB of the shot-noise limit. We provide an
enhanced version of the CBD scheme that concatenates circuits to suppress over
multiple frequencies and over broad frequency ranges --- we perform a first
demonstration that reduces total excess amplitude noise, between 2 - 6 MHz, by
85%. These demonstrations enable passive, broad-band, all-guided fibre laser
technology operating at the shot-noise limit.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
The MAPPINGS III Library of Fast Radiative Shock Models
We present a new library of fully-radiative shock models calculated with the
MAPPINGS III shock and photoionization code. The library consists of grids of
models with shock velocities in the range v=100-1000 km/s and magnetic
parameters B/sqrt(n) of 10^-4 - 10 muG cm^(3/2) for five different atomic
abundance sets, and for a pre-shock density of 1.0 cm^(-3). Additionally, Solar
abundance model grids have been calculated for densities of 0.01, 0.1, 10, 100,
and 1000 cm^(-3) with the same range in v and B/sqrt(n). Each model includes
components of both the radiative shock and its photoionized precursor, ionized
by the EUV and soft X-ray radiation generated in the radiative gas. We present
the details of the ionization structure, the column densities, and the
luminosities of the shock and its precursor. Emission line ratio predictions
are separately given for the shock and its precursor as well as for the
composite shock+precursor structure to facilitate comparison with observations
in cases where the shock and its precursor are not resolved. Emission line
ratio grids for shock and shock+precursor are presented on standard line ratio
diagnostic diagrams, and we compare these grids to observations of radio
galaxies and a sample of AGN and star forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey. This library is available online, along with a suite of tools to
enable the analysis of the shocks and the easy creation of emission line ratio
diagnostic diagrams. These models represent a significant increase in parameter
space coverage over previously available models, and therefore provide a unique

Ultraviolet Imagery of NGC 6752: A Test of Extreme Horizontal Branch Models
We present a 1620 A image of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6752 obtained
with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-2 mission of the
Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1995 March. An ultraviolet-visible color-magnitude
diagram (CMD) is derived for 216 stars matched with the visible photometry of
Buonanno et al. (1986). This CMD provides a nearly complete census of the hot
horizontal branch (HB) population with good temperature and luminosity
discrimination for comparison with theoretical tracks. The observed data show
good agreement with the theoretical zero-age horizontal branch (ZAHB) of
Sweigart (1996) for an assumed reddening of E(B-V) = 0.05 and a distance
modulus of 13.05. The observed HB luminosity width is in excellent agreement
with the theoretical models and supports the single star scenario for the
origin of extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars. However, only four stars can
be identified as post-EHB stars, whereas almost three times this many are
expected from the HB number counts. If this effect is not a statistical
anomaly, then some non-canonical effect may be decreasing the post-EHB
lifetime. The recent non-canonical models of Sweigart (1996), which have
helium-enriched envelopes due to mixing along the red giant branch, cannot
explain the deficit of post-EHB stars, but might be better able to explain

Ultraviolet Imaging Observations of the cD Galaxy in Abell 1795: Further Evidence for Massive Star Formation in a Cooling Flow
We present images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope of the Abell 1795
cluster of galaxies. We compare the cD galaxy morphology and photometry of
these data with those from existing archival and published data. The addition
of a far--UV color helps us to construct and test star formation model
scenarios for the sources of UV emission. Models of star formation with rates
in the range \sim5-20M_{\sun}yr indicate that the best fitting models
are those with continuous star formation or a recent ( Myr old) burst
superimposed on an old population. The presence of dust in the galaxy,
dramatically revealed by HST images complicates the interpretation of UV data.
However, we find that the broad--band UV/optical colors of this cD galaxy can
be reasonably matched by models using a Galactic form for the extinction law
with . We also briefly discuss other objects in the large UIT
