    Role of Online Social Networks in Job Search by Unemployed Individuals

    The recent growth of online social networks has enabled job seekers to stay connected with all of their acquaintances. Thus the number of online connections – weak or strong – that an individual is able to manage has increased significantly. In this paper, we first examine if an individual’s online social network plays a role in driving her job search behavior. Secondly, we examine how the ties (weak and strong) and search intensity affect the job outcomes (job leads, interviews and offers) received from online social networks vs. those from other job search modes like career fairs & agencies, newspapers & magazines, internet, and close friends and family (offline). Using a survey data of 109 unemployed job seekers, we find that weak ties are especially helpful in generating job leads but it is the strong ties that play an important role in generating job interviews and job offers

    Introduction of a teaching module on intravenous drug administration and communication skills in pharmacology

    Background: Pharmacology practicals mainly focus on increasing the knowledge component but teaching on psychomotor and soft skills is largely lacking. Teaching correct method of intravenous drug administration and the communication skills about drug therapy in Pharmacology practical classes can help in minimizing the errors in drug administration and improving the patient compliance and adherence to the therapy. Objectives of this study were teaching module on intravenous drug administration and communication skills to undergraduate students in Pharmacology and to evaluate the perceptions of students and teachers towards the new teaching module.Methods: Correct methods of intravenous drug administration were demonstrated in practical classes. Role play was done to teach about communication skills regarding right method of using an inhaler and also about prescribing the correct dosage regimens. Perceptions of students and teaching staff members were collected on the teaching module.Results: Almost all of the students (>96 %) were of the opinion that learning correct drug administration methods and communication skills was relevant to the future practice and 95% students felt that after the role play sessions, they were better equipped in communicating with the patients about the medication use and were in favour of teaching these to all the medical students.Conclusions: Our study concludes that the teaching module on intravenous drug administration and communication skills was well accepted by both the teaching staff and the students and was found feasible and relevant to be introduced in the curriculum by both of them

    Teplizumab is the first monoclonal antibody used to delay the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM). It is a highly selective, a CD3-directed monoclonal antibody, given parenterally that was approved in November 2022, for delaying the onset of Stage 3 type 1 diabetes in adults and paediatric patients aged 8 years and older with stage 2 type 1 Diabetes. It binds to the immune cells that destroy the insulin producing pancreatic beta cells and inactivates them thereby leading to decreased rate of reduction in insulin production and subsequently delay in the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes

    Global Environmental Microelectromechanical Systems Sensors: Advanced Weather Observation System

    The technological developments in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have resulted in conceptualisation of a next generation observation system called global environmental MEMS sensors (GEMS). GEMS consists of a large number of airborne probes that will remain suspended in the atmosphere for long durations and take in situ measurements of pressure, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity as these are carried by air currents. It is envisaged that GEMS network would provide a systematic understanding of the earths atmosphere and would improve weather forecast accuracy, well beyond the current capability. In addition to gathering meteorological data, probes could be used for environmental monitoring of particulate emissions, organic and inorganic pollutants, ozone, carbon dioxide, and chemical, biological, or nuclear contaminants. The GEMS concept requires integration of communication engineering and instrumentation with other evolving technologies. This review describes in detail the new observation system designed for environmental monitoring and its potential application in predicting cyclones and monsoon, and measurement of urban air pollution in India.     Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Beyond Obesity

    Sleep disorders are of growing concern and are a major public health problem. The obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common among different sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs). Obesity is a known associated risk factor for the OSA but is not limited to them. OSA is also recognized in nonobese population. The description of OSA in non obese patients in the literature is sparse. The clinical presentation is similar as in obese but has few differences as far as pathophysiology and polysomnographic features are concerned. The severity of OSA in nonobese has less severe manifestations thus requires early recognition and different treatment strategy to prevent mismanagement of these patients

    Personality-Based Content Engineering for Rich Digital Media

    Firms have increasingly turned to rich digital media, such as videos and photos, to attract attention and boost awareness. Although extant research may help firms promote these media more effectively, the marketing process truly begins with creation of the media. Thus, content creators may benefit from understanding what media is likely to achieve greater popularity, based on its content features. We develop a method to understand the effect of content on the consumption of online videos, and employ our method on a unique dataset including 16,414 videos from 363 YouTube channels. Our approach labels videos as high- or low-performing relative to comparable videos, and leverages random forests to identify content features associated with performance level. We test this method using the personality of speech-driven videos, employing NLP to estimate the extent to which video captions exhibit each of the “big five” personality traits. Our analysis uncovers predictive, economic, and prescriptive insights. We find that using just their personality, we can predict whether videos perform better than expectation with 72% accuracy. Furthermore, videos associated with high-performing personalities can expect a nearly 15% increase in consumption. Finally, we examine which personalities are associated with high consumption, offering prescriptive insights for content engineering
