    Acute effect of sumithion on certain blood parameters and mortality rate of fish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch)

    The acute toxic effect of the toxicant sumithion (50% E.C.) on mortality rate (after 24, 48, 72, and 96 h), total RBC count and haemoglobin content (after 48 and 72 h) on Heteropneustes fossilis was investigated at four concentrations (9.7, 10.7 and 11.1 ppm). The sumithion treated fishes showed lower RBC and Hb levels than the untreated ones. A gradual decrease in the total RBC counts and Hb contents was recorded with increasing concentration of toxicant after 72 h but the blood showed fluctuating values after 48 h of treatment

    Some new features of electron density irregularities over SHAR during strong spread F

    International audienceAn RH-560 rocket flight was conducted from Sriharikota rocket range (SHAR) (14°N, 80°E, dip latitude 5.5°N) to study electron density and electric field irregularities during spread F. The rocket was launched at 2130 local time (LT) and it attained an apogee of 348 km. Results of electron density fluctuations are presented here. Two extremely sharp layers of very high electron density were observed at 105 and 130 km. The electron density increase in these layers was by a factor of 50 in a vertical extent of 10 km. Large depletions in electron density were observed around 175 and 238 km. Both sharp layers as well as depletions were observed also during the descent. The presence of sharp layers and depletions during the ascent and the descent of the rocket as well as an order of magnitude less electron density, in 150-300 km region during the descent, indicate the presence of strong large-scale horizontal gradients in the electron density. Some of the valley region irregularities (165-178 km), in the intermediate scale size range, observed during this flight, show spectral peaks at 2 km and can be interpreted in terms of the image striation theory suggested by Vickrey et al. The irregularities at 176 km do not exhibit any peak at kilometer scales and appear to be of new type. The growth rate of intermediate scale size irregularities, produced through generalized Rayleigh Taylor instability, was calculated for the 200-330 km altitude, using observed values of electron density gradients and an assumed vertically downward wind of 20 ms-1. These growth rate calculations suggest that the observed irregularities could be produced by the gradient drift instability

    A simpler explanation of the reflective properties of conic sections, by following light rays along local isosceles paths

    Ellipses, parabolas and hyperbolas all have beautiful reflective properties. However, an intuitive explanation for why they have those properties has been lacking. There exist many mathematical proofs, but they tend to involve several analytical steps or geometrical constructions, making them unintuitive and hard to understand. Here, a simpler explanation is presented which only requires following the paths of light rays, and examining local paths that move from one point on a conic to a nearby one. First, a light-ray is followed as it runs along one of the legs of an isosceles triangle, and then reflects off a mirror that is parallel to the triangle's base. It bounces back along the path of the triangle's other leg. Next, a path is examined, moving from an arbitrary point on a conic section curve to a nearby point on the same curve. This path consists of two equal-length straight line steps, with each step following one of the constraints that defines the curve. For example, on an ellipse, defined by the sum of the distances to the two foci remaining constant, the path starts at a point on the ellipse, moves a distance delta directly away from one focus, then makes a second equal-length step directly towards the second focus. These two steps form the legs of precisely the sort of isosceles triangle described above, with its base running along the path of the curve. A light ray following the legs of that triangle gets reflected directly from one focus to the other. As the triangle shrinks towards zero, the reflection point converges onto the actual curve. Exactly the same argument also explains the reflections of parabolas and hyperbolas. Surprisingly, this explanation does not seem to have appeared previously in the long history of writings about conics.     Research problem: Perceptions about sex-re- iated myths and misconceptions. Objectives: To identify the difference in percep­tions of mates and females over sex-reiated myths and misconceptions. Study Design - Community based cross sectional study. Setting - Self-administered questionnaire study was un­dertaken in an urban area of Jhansi. Participants - Married couples with reproductive age wife. Sample size - 417 couples of the area. Study Variables-Sex-related myths and misconceptions. Outcome Variables - Masturbation, Penis-size and sexual performance, STD transmission. Intercourse with virgin and cure of STDs, Initiation of sexual act, Bleeding on first night. Statistical analysis - By chi - square test. Results: Response rate 63.8%. Only 8.6% females and 33.7% males knew correctly about masturbation. Males also knew better about route of STD infection (73.5%) and about the fact that intercouse with a virgin cannot cure STDs (47.4%). Females, however, outnumber males on the question of relation between man's penis size and his sexual performance (70%), initiation of sexual act (58.6%) and bleeding in females on first night of marriage (70%). Conclusion: Males and females had significantly different perceptions on sex related myths and misconceptions. Recommendations: Sex education campaigns should be designed and implemented to eliminate these age old sex related myths and misconceptions

    Factors Associated with Tuberculosis and Rifampicin-Resistant Tuberculosis amongst Symptomatic Patients in India: A Retrospective Analysis

    Background Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge for India. Various studies have documented different levels of TB and multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB among diverse groups of the population. In view of renewed targets set under the End TB strategy by 2035, there is an urgent need for TB diagnosis to be strengthened. Drawing on data from a recent, multisite study, we address key questions for TB diagnosis amongst symptomatics presenting for care: are there subgroups of patients that are more likely than others, to be positive for TB? In turn, amongst these positive cases, are there factors—apart from treatment history—that may be predictive for multi-drug resistance? Methods We used data from a multi-centric prospective demonstration study, conducted from March 2012 to December 2013 in 18 sub-district level TB programme units (TUs) in India and covering a population of 8.8 million. In place of standard diagnostic tests, upfront Xpert MTB/RIF testing was offered to all presumptive TB symptomatics. Here, using data from this study, we used logistic regression to identify association between risk factors and TB and Rifampicin-Resistant TB among symptomatics enrolled in the study. Results We find that male gender; history of TB treatment; and adult age compared with either children or the elderly are risk factors associated with high TB detection amongst symptomatics, across the TUs. While treatment history is found be a significant risk factor for rifampicin-resistant TB, elderly (65+ yrs) people have significantly lower risk than other age groups. However, pediatric TB cases have no less risk of rifampicin resistance as compared with adults (OR 1.23 (95% C.I. 0.85–1.76)). Similarly, risk of rifampicin resistance among both the genders was the same. These patterns applied across the study sites involved. Notably in Mumbai, amongst those patients with microbiological confirmation of TB, female patients showed a higher risk of having MDR-TB than male patients. Conclusion Our results cast fresh light on the characteristics of symptomatics presenting for care who are most likely to be microbiologically positive for TB, and for rifampicin resistance. The challenges posed by TB control are complex and multifactorial: evidence from diverse sources, including retrospective studies such as that addressed here, can be invaluable in informing future strategies to accelerate declines in TB burden

    UK-South Asian patients' experiences of and satisfaction toward receiving information about biologics in rheumatoid arthritis

    Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes painful joint inflammation and is incurable, but treatments control RA. Drug regimens are complex, and patients often do not take their medication as expected. Poor medication adherence can lead to poorly controlled disease and worse patient outcomes. Biologics treatments are expensive and require full engagement from patients. We have previously shown that patients from Black ethnic minority backgrounds do not fully engage into treatment plan. This study explored the patients’ experiences in and satisfaction toward receiving information about biologics and future support preferences in South Asian patients with RA. Methods: Twenty South Asian patients with RA from Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust and Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed and data were analyzed by using thematic analysis approach. Results: Four overarching themes describe the patients’ experience in and satisfaction toward receiving information on biologics: 1) current provision of information regarding the “biologics journey” and understanding of RA: in this theme, non-English-speaking patients expressed heightened anxiety about stepping up to biologics; 2) experience and perceptions of biologics: many patients were positive about the biologic experience; however, there were patient-perceived delays in getting on to the biologics; 3) factors influencing willingness to try biologics: in this theme, a number of factors were identified including seeking advice from doctors abroad; and 4) recommendations on the desired information to fully understand the use of biologics: some patients valued group discussions, while others suggested receiving RA and biologic information through a video interaction. Conclusion: This novel study provides insight into South Asian RA patients’ experiences in and satisfaction toward receiving information about biologics. South Asian patients with RA reported a range of perceptions about biologics and support preferences, many of which may not be shared with the non-South Asian population

    Effects of physiological doses of vitamin D sub(3) (Cholecalciferol) on induced molting and growth in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man)

    Effects of three different doses of vitamin D sub(3) on molting, growth, and calcium and phosphate composition of tissue and molt during the grow-out of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (average weight 10.56 ± 0.20 g), obtained from a grow-out pond, were studied. Intramuscular doses of vitamin D sub(3) (100, 500 and 2000 IU/kg body weight) were given on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th days. All the experimental animals were fed with a basal diet containing fish meal, shrimp meal, wheat flour, groundnut de-oiled cake, soybean meal and wheat bran at 3% of the body weight. The numbers of molts were recorded as 20±0.50, 29±1.16, 51±1.87, and 30±1.60 in control, 100, 500 and 2000 IU/kg body weight physiological doses, respectively. Maximum growth was recorded in prawns given 500 IU/ kg dose. Survival was between 58.33 ± 9.13 and 77.77 ± 8.61%. The ash content and calcium level increased significantly (p0.05) in both tissue and molt at 500 and 2000 IU/kg doses. It was found that a higher physiological dose (2000 IU/kg) of vitamin D sub(3) increased the rate of mortality. Results have shown that vitamin D sub(3) has a positive impact on the growth and survival of M. rosenbergii and it interferes with the metabolism of Ca and P sub(i), in tissue, and alters molting frequency. Results on physiological dose suggest an alternative and effective dietary supplementation method of vitamin D sub(3) in the grow-out phase of M. rosenbergii

    Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor Pyridostigmine Bromide Attenuates Gut Pathology and Bacterial Dysbiosis in a Murine Model of Ulcerative Colitis

    Abstract Background Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a Th2 infammatory bowel disease characterized by increased IL-5 and IL-13 expression, eosinophilic/neutrophilic infltration, decreased mucus production, impaired epithelial barrier, and bacterial dysbiosis of the colon. Acetylcholine and nicotine stimulate mucus production and suppress Th2 infammation through nicotinic receptors in lungs but UC is rarely observed in smokers and the mechanism of the protection is unclear. Methods In order to evaluate whether acetylcholine can ameliorate UC-associated pathologies, we employed a mouse model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC-like conditions, and a group of mice were treated with Pyridostigmine bromide (PB) to increase acetylcholine availability. The efects on colonic tissue morphology, Th2 infammatory factors, MUC2 mucin, and gut microbiota were analyzed. Results DSS challenge damaged the murine colonic architecture, reduced the MUC2 mucin and the tight-junction protein ZO-1. The PB treatment signifcantly attenuated these DSS-induced responses along with the eosinophilic infltration and the pro-Th2 infammatory factors. Moreover, PB inhibited the DSS-induced loss of commensal Clostridia and Flavobacteria, and the gain of pathogenic Erysipelotrichia and Fusobacteria. Conclusions Together, these data suggest that in colons of a murine model, PB promotes MUC2 synthesis, suppresses Th2 infammation and attenuates bacterial dysbiosis therefore, PB has a therapeutic potential in UC
