    Towards Separating Computational and Statistical Differential Privacy

    Computational differential privacy (CDP) is a natural relaxation of the standard notion of (statistical) differential privacy (SDP) proposed by Beimel, Nissim, and Omri (CRYPTO 2008) and Mironov, Pandey, Reingold, and Vadhan (CRYPTO 2009). In contrast to SDP, CDP only requires privacy guarantees to hold against computationally-bounded adversaries rather than computationally-unbounded statistical adversaries. Despite the question being raised explicitly in several works (e.g., Bun, Chen, and Vadhan, TCC 2016), it has remained tantalizingly open whether there is any task achievable with the CDP notion but not the SDP notion. Even a candidate such task is unknown. Indeed, it is even unclear what the truth could be! In this work, we give the first construction of a task achievable with the CDP notion but not the SDP notion, under the following strong but plausible cryptographic assumptions: (1) Non-Interactive Witness Indistinguishable Proofs, (2) Laconic Collision-Resistant Keyless Hash Functions, (3) Differing-Inputs Obfuscation for Public-Coin Samplers. In particular, we construct a task for which there exists an ε\varepsilon-CDP mechanism with ε=O(1)\varepsilon = O(1) achieving 1o(1)1-o(1) utility, but any (ε,δ)(\varepsilon, \delta)-SDP mechanism, including computationally-unbounded ones, that achieves a constant utility must use either a super-constant ε\varepsilon or an inverse-polynomially large δ\delta. To prove this, we introduce a new approach for showing that a mechanism satisfies CDP: first we show that a mechanism is "private" against a certain class of decision tree adversaries, and then we use cryptographic constructions to "lift" this into privacy against computationally bounded adversaries.     Total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant effects and antidiarrheal activity of balacaturbhadrika churna – an Ayurvedic preparation

    485-492Balacaturbhadrika churna (BC) is an important pediatric preparation in Ayurveda. It is used to treat various diseases of gastro-intestinal tract particularly diarrhea in children. Free radicals cause oxidative damage in the intestine and are correlated with its diseases. In the current study, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of BC extracts were determined and their antioxidant evaluation in various in vitro models was carried out. Procedures mentioned in The Ayurvedic Formulary of India were followed to prepare in-house BC; alcoholic (BCAL) and aqueous (BCAQ) extracts were prepared and tested by standard procedures. BCAL was tested for antidiarrheal activity in castor oil induced model. The ethanolic extract showed better antioxidant activity in many of the models as compared to aqueous extract. The present study showed substantial amounts of flavonoids and phenolics in churna extracts. BCAL showed significant antidiarrheal activity against the tested model. The potential antioxidant and antidiarrheal activities displayed by Balacaturbhadrika churna extracts could be attributed to these contents

    Risk factors of acute respiratory distress syndrome in Scrub typhus

    Background: Scrub typhus is a common tropical infection presenting as acute febrile illness. Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a serious complication of scrub typhus and is often associated with high mortality. This study was aimed to analyse risk factors of ARDS in Scrub typhus patients.Methods: This study was a prospective observational case control study conducted from June 2012 to June 2015 in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, Karnataka, India. ARDS was diagnosed as per Berlin criteria.Results: During the study period, a total of 320 patients were diagnosed to have scrub typhus as per our criteria. All the patients were from state of Karnataka except for 1 patient, who was from state of Kerala. A total of 20 (6.25%) patients (cases) were diagnosed to have ARDS and 300 (93.75%) patients (controls) did not have ARDS. After multivariate analysis of the risk factors only two risk factors had significant association with development of ARDS: sepsis (OR 4.34,95% CI 0.51,36.76) and septic shock (OR 16.57 95% CI 1.64,166.76).Conclusions: ARDS is a common and serious complication of scrub typhus. It often occurs along with other complications. Presence of dyspnoea, sepsis, septic shock, hypoalbuminemia should alert clinicians about ARDS. ARDS due to scrub typhus is associated with high mortality. Early recognition and prompt therapy can reduce mortality

    Screening of Extended Family Members of Thalassemia Major Children as a Thalassemia Preventive Strategy

    BACKGROUND: Thalassemia is considered as the most common single gene disorder worldwide. Preventive measures include identification of thalassemia carriers (traits) through screening, genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis to reduce the incidence. This study aims at estimating the prevalence of carrier status detection among the extended family members of children having thalassemia major so as to use it as a screening prevention strategy with appropriate counselling. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in thalassemia unit of Pediatric Department of a tertiary care teaching hospital over a period of 18 months. Blood samples were collected from 117 extended family members (EFM) of 23 children with thalassemia major to carry out investigations such as Complete Blood Counts (CBC), Naked Eye Single Tube Red Cell Osmotic Fragility Test (NESTROFT), Reticulocyte count, High Performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC) and serum ferritin. Reports were analysed to find out the prevalence of carriers. RESULTS: Among 117 EFM, 62 (52.9%) were males while 55(47.1%) were females. Mean age distribution in this study was 16.49 years (8.5). Prevalence of thalassemia trait (carrier) was 35%. NESTROFT test was positive in 57(48.7%) participants. The binary logistic regression found only positive NESTROFT test as a predictor (adjusted OR=0.022, P=0.001) of having raised HbA2 (HbA2≥3.5 %). CONCLUSION: Screening of thalassemia carrier by targeting extended family members of thalassemia major children could yield more carrier cases and targeted counselling could help effectively in decreasing the number of children born with thalassemia major. This strategy could be included in future plan of national prevention programme for thalassemia

    Finding Inductive Loop Invariants using Large Language Models

    Loop invariants are fundamental to reasoning about programs with loops. They establish properties about a given loop's behavior. When they additionally are inductive, they become useful for the task of formal verification that seeks to establish strong mathematical guarantees about program's runtime behavior. The inductiveness ensures that the invariants can be checked locally without consulting the entire program, thus are indispensable artifacts in a formal proof of correctness. Finding inductive loop invariants is an undecidable problem, and despite a long history of research towards practical solutions, it remains far from a solved problem. This paper investigates the capabilities of the Large Language Models (LLMs) in offering a new solution towards this old, yet important problem. To that end, we first curate a dataset of verification problems on programs with loops. Next, we design a prompt for exploiting LLMs, obtaining inductive loop invariants, that are checked for correctness using sound symbolic tools. Finally, we explore the effectiveness of using an efficient combination of a symbolic tool and an LLM on our dataset and compare it against a purely symbolic baseline. Our results demonstrate that LLMs can help improve the state-of-the-art in automated program verification
