    Habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic factors affect wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris occupancy and detectability on Mt Etna

    Knowledge of patterns of occupancy is crucial for planning sound biological management and for identifying areas which require paramount conservation attention. The European wildcat Felis silvestris is an elusive carnivore and is classified as ‘least concern’ on the IUCN red list, but with a decreasing population trend in some areas. Sicily hosts a peculiar wildcat population, which deserves conservation and management actions, due to its isolation from the mainland. Patterns of occupancy for wildcats are unknown in Italy, and especially in Sicily. We aimed to identify which ecological drivers determined wildcat occurrence on Mt Etna and to provide conservation actions to promote the wildcats’ long-term survival in this peculiar environment. The genetic identity of the wildcat population was confirmed through a scat-collection which detected 22 different wildcat individuals. We analysed wildcat detections collected by 91 cameras using an occupancy frame work to assess which covariates influenced the detection (p) and the occupancy (ψ) estimates. We recorded 70 detections of the target species from 38 cameras within 3377 trap-days. Wildcat detection was positively influenced by the distance to the major paved roads and negatively affected by the presence of humans. Wildcat occupancy was positively associated with mixed forest and negatively influenced by pine forest, fragmentation of mixed forest and altitude. A spatially explicit predicted occupancy map, validated using an independent dataset of wildcat presence records, showed that higher occupancy estimates were scattered, mainly located on the north face and at lower altitude. Habitat fragmentation has been claimed as a significant threat for the wildcat and this is the first study that has ascertained this as a limiting factor for wildcat occurrence. Conservation actions should promote interconnectivity between areas with high predicted wildcat occupancy while minimising the loss of habitat

    Aeroacoustics of sawtooth trailing-edge serrations under aerodynamic loading

    The impact of aerodynamic loading on a serrated trailing edge is studied experimentally. Aerodynamic and acoustic measurements are conducted on a sawtooth-shaped trailing edge, retrofitted to a flat plate featuring a trailing-edge flap, and placed at incidence to the free-stream flow. The turbulent flow across the trailing edge is inspected by time-resolved three-dimensional velocity field measurements obtained from 4D-PIV, while the wall-pressure fluctuations are measured with surface-embedded microphones. Results discuss the relation between the velocity fluctuations over the serrations, the surface pressure fluctuations, and the far-field noise spectra. The aerodynamic analysis discusses the effect of counter-rotating vortex pairs, generated by the pressure imbalance across the edges of the serrations under loading. It is shown that the interaction of these vortices with the incoming turbulence affects the intensity of the wall-pressure spectrum at the outer rim of the serration surface. On the suction side, the intensity of the pressure fluctuations from the incoming boundary layer dominates over that induced by the vortex pairs. On the pressure side, instead, the velocity gradient prescribed by the vortex pairs produces a significant increase of the pressure fluctuations around the edges. The resulting spatial distribution of the wall-pressure fluctuations directly affects the far-field noise. Scattering predictions carried out with the wall-pressure fluctuations in the centre and root (on the suction side) exhibit good agreement with the measured noise in the low-frequency range, whereas using the surface pressure data at the tip of the serration (on the pressure side) yields a better prediction in the high-frequency range

    Definition of a benchmark for low Reynolds number propeller aeroacoustics

    Experimental and numerical results of a propeller of 0.3 m diameter operated at 5000 RPM and axial velocity ranging from 0 to 20 m/s and advance ratio ranging from 0 to 0.8 are presented as a preliminary step towards the definition of a benchmark configuration for low Reynolds number propeller aeroacoustics. The corresponding rotational tip Mach number is 0.23 and the Reynolds number based on the blade sectional chord and flow velocity varies from about 46000 to 106000 in the operational domain and in the 30% to 100% blade radial range. Force and noise measurements carried out in a low-speed semi-anechoic wind-tunnel are compared to scale-resolved CFD and low-fidelity numerical predictions. Results identify the experimental and numerical challenges of the benchmark and the relevance of fundamental research questions related to transition and other low Reynolds number effects

    Acoustic wall treatments for wind tunnel aeroacoustic measurements

    Sound absorbing porous materials are used to line a wind tunnel wall, in order to reduce reflections. However, the lining can have a detrimental effect on the acoustic measurements due to an increase in the noise radiated from the walls. In addition, the aerodynamic fidelity of the tunnel can be affected. In the present study, the influence of the porous materials on the boundary layer aerodynamic characteristics is assessed. The consequent aerodynamic noise scattering is also studied, and compared against the acoustic benefit from absorbing reflections in the test section. Geometric modelling is used to understand the influence of varying absorbing materials in reducing the acoustic interference caused by the reflections. The aerodynamic and acoustic results are related to the roughness, and to the viscous and inertial resistivities of the three porous materials studied. The material with highest roughness (polyester wool) is found to result in the strongest turbulent fluctuations in the boundary layer. However, it is the material with the thickest fibre diameter (PU foam), and consequent highest inertial resistivity, which generates the strongest surface noise scattering. Materials with high viscous resistivity, together with low inertial resistivity, are found to provide good sound absorbing capabilities. The results therefore indicate that the best choice of sound absorbing wall treatment for wind tunnel applications results from minimizing roughness and inertial resistivity, while maximizing viscous resistivity

    A Resilience and Robustness Oriented Design of Base-Isolated Structures: The New Camerino University Research Center

    This paper analyses the new Research Centre designed for the University of Camerino and entirely financed by the national Civil Protection Department (DPC), following the seismic events in Central Italy in 2016. The building has been designed to guarantee speed of execution as well as a high level of safety, especially regarding seismic actions. The structural solution was to create an isolated system with a steel braced super-structure with pinned joints and r.c. sub-structures able to adapt to the complex morphology of the area. As described in the first part of the paper, design choices have been made to achieve a high level of resilience and robustness, i.e., to limit damage to structural and non-structural components and equipment under moderate and design seismic actions and to avoid disproportionate consequences in the event of extreme actions, larger than the design ones. In the second part of the paper, specific risk analyses have been carried out to evaluate the real performance of the building under increasing intensity levels, with reference to both serviceability and ultimate conditions. To this purpose a site-specific hazard study was first conducted, then non-linear analyses were performed using a hazard-consistent set of records with return periods ranging from TR = 60 years to TR = 10000 years. The main demand parameters of both the isolation system and the super-structure were recorded and capacity values corresponding to different ultimate and damage limit conditions were defined. The results obtained in terms of demand hazard curves show that the building performances in terms of robustness and resilience are very high, confirming the efficacy of the strategies adopted in the design

    Lattice Boltzmann very large eddy simulations of a turbulent flow over covered and uncovered cavities

    Microphone measurements in a closed test section wind tunnel are affected by turbulent boundary layer (TBL) pressure fluctuations. These fluctuations are mitigated by placing the microphones at the bottom of cavities, usually covered with a thin, acoustically transparent material. Prior experiments showed that the cavity geometry affects the propagation of TBL pressure fluctuations toward the bottom. However, the relationship between the cavity geometry and the flowfield within the cavity is not well understood. Therefore, a very large-eddy simulation was performed using the lattice Boltzmann method. A cylindrical, a countersunk and a conical cavity are simulated with and without a fine wire-cloth cover, which is modeled as a porous medium governed by Darcy’s law. Adding a countersink to an uncovered cylindrical cavity is found to mitigate the transport of turbulent structures across the bottom by shifting the recirculation pattern away from the cavity bottom. Covering the cavities nearly eliminates this source of hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations. The eddies within the boundary layer, which convect over the cover, generate a primarily acoustic pressure field inside the cavities and thus suggesting that the pressure fluctuations within covered cavities can be modeled acoustically. As the cavity diameter increases compared to the eddies’ integral length scale, the amount of energy in the cut-off modes increases with respect to the cut-on modes. Since cut-off modes decay as they propagate into the cavity, more attenuation is seen. The results are in agreement with experimental evidenc

    Meat quality and lipid fatty acid profile from wild thrush (Turdus philomelos), woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) and starling (Sturnus vulgaris): A preliminary comparative study

    Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional proximate composition, some qualitative traits and fatty acid profile of meat from wild thrush, woodcock and starling hunted in Southern Italy in 2017 and 2018. Methods: Nutritive composition and physical traits of meat and lipid fatty acid profile were evaluated in breast muscle (Pectoralis major) of gamebirds. Results: From findings, the meat pH was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in starling when compared to the other two species. Thrush meat was significantly (P = 0.002) darker and had higher redness (P < 0.001) and yellowness (P = 0.004) in comparison to starling and woodcock. Thrush breast muscle showed the highest (P < 0.001) level of lipids and lowest (P < 0.001) protein content. Meat from thrush showed the best lipid fatty acid profile based on the higher (P < 0.001) monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and lower (P < 0.001) saturated fatty acids (SFA) concentrations. Starling breast muscle reported the highest (P = 0.002) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) level compared to both thrush and woodcock, whereas no differences were detected on total n-3. The ratio n-6/n-3 was higher (P = 0.001) in starling muscle. Thrush breast muscle had the lowest (P < 0.001) atherogenic and thrombogenic indices compared to the other gamebirds. Conclusions: The findings indicated that meat from the three investigated gamebirds species may represent a healthily lipid food source for human consumption in relation to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases
