    Experimental and numerical study of stenotic flows

    Atherosclerosis has been leading cause of deaths in several countries. Recent technical advances have allowed the investigation of stenotic flows and in understanding the implications with increased severity. Such studies shall provide detailed understanding of flow across stenosis and its progression. In the present study, a large artery representing segment of aorta is considered as test specimen. Experimental study is carried out by generating the pulsatile flow through pulsatile duplicator. Flow across normal and various severities of stenosis such as 25%, 50% and 75% are studied. Numerical simulation using CFD is also carried out in similar normal and stenosed models. A novel concept of using pulse duplicator to generate pulsatile waves and investigate the different stenosed models has been adopted. Results obtained experimentally and numerically are compared and agree well with that of clinical observations. This study demonstrates significant variation of haemodynamic in post-stenotic region with increased stenosis. Increased pulse pressure, phase lag is observed with increased severity. It is also observed that stenosis greater than 75% is significant as flow complexity is induced with considerable disturbance even in early and latter part of pulse cycle. Such study shall be useful in understanding the flow changes in stenosis and enhance clinical observation

    Fluid-structure interaction study of stenotic flow in subject specific carotid bifurcation: a case study

    Advances in numerical simulation have allowed the investigation of complex interaction of blood flow through elastic arteries which can be useful in demonstrating the disease progression and haemodynamics of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. In the present study, patient is diagnosed with an occluded right Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) with partial stenosis at root of right External Carotid Artery (ECA) and partial stenosis at the root of left ICA. 3D patient specific carotid bifurcation is generated based on CT scan data using MIMICS-14.0 and numerical analysis is performed using FSI in ANSYS-14.5. The blood flow is assumed to be incompressible, homogenous and Newtonian, while artery wall is assumed to behave linearly elastic. The two-way sequentially coupled transient FSI analysis is performed using FSI solver for three pulse cycles and haemodynamic parameters such as flow pattern, Wall Shear Stress (WSS), pressure contours and arterial wall deformation are studied at the bifurcation and critical zones. The variation in flow behavior is investigated throughout the pulse and simulation results obtained reveals that there is a considerable increase in the flow behavior in partially stenosed carotid unlike occluded carotid. The investigation also demonstrates disturbed flow pattern especially at the bifurcation and stenosed zone elevating the haemodynamic variation during peak systole and later part of pulse cycle. The obtained results agree well with the clinical observation and demonstrate the potential of patient specific numerical studies in prognosis of disease progression and plaque rupture

    The effects of cold working on sensitization and intergranular corrosion behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel

    The effects of prior cold rolling of up to an 80 pct reduction in thickness on the sensitization-desensitization behavior of Type AISI 304 stainless steel and its susceptibility to intergranular corrosion have been studied by electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) and Strauss-test methods. The results indicate that the prior deformation accelerated the sensitization as compared to the undeformed stainless steel. The deformed Type 304 stainless steel experienced desensitization at higher temperatures and times, and it was found to be enhanced by increased cold deformation. This could be attributed to the increased long-range chromium diffusion, possibly brought on by increasing pipe diffusion and vacancies. The role of the deformation-induced martensite (DIM) and texture, introduced by uniaxial cold rolling, on the sensitization-desensitization kinetics has also been discussed. This study could not reveal any systematic relationship between texture and the degree of sensitization (DOS) obtained. The effect of DIM on DOS seems to be pronounced at 500 °C when the steel retained significant amounts of DIM; however, the retained DIM is insignificant at higher sensitization times and temperatures

    Prognostic model to predict postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery based on a national prospective observational cohort study.

    Background: Acute illness, existing co-morbidities and surgical stress response can all contribute to postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. The aim of this study was prospectively to develop a pragmatic prognostic model to stratify patients according to risk of developing AKI after major gastrointestinal surgery. Methods: This prospective multicentre cohort study included consecutive adults undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection, liver resection or stoma reversal in 2-week blocks over a continuous 3-month period. The primary outcome was the rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery. Bootstrap stability was used to select clinically plausible risk factors into the model. Internal model validation was carried out by bootstrap validation. Results: A total of 4544 patients were included across 173 centres in the UK and Ireland. The overall rate of AKI was 14·2 per cent (646 of 4544) and the 30-day mortality rate was 1·8 per cent (84 of 4544). Stage 1 AKI was significantly associated with 30-day mortality (unadjusted odds ratio 7·61, 95 per cent c.i. 4·49 to 12·90; P < 0·001), with increasing odds of death with each AKI stage. Six variables were selected for inclusion in the prognostic model: age, sex, ASA grade, preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate, planned open surgery and preoperative use of either an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker. Internal validation demonstrated good model discrimination (c-statistic 0·65). Discussion: Following major gastrointestinal surgery, AKI occurred in one in seven patients. This preoperative prognostic model identified patients at high risk of postoperative AKI. Validation in an independent data set is required to ensure generalizability

    A Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach is used to model fluid flow in a journal bearing with three equi-spaced axial grooves and supplied with water from one end. Water is subjected to both velocity (Couette) &amp; pressure induced (Poiseuille) flow. The working fluid passing through the bearing clearance generates driving force components that may increase the unstable vibration of the rotor. It is important to know the accurate rotor dynamic force component for predicting the instability of rotor bearing systems.     Investigations on high temperature corrosion of wire enameling oven

    The oven belonging to a wire enameling plant was heavily oxidized resulting in the contamination of the final product. The heating chamber of the oven therefore had to be removed prematurely from service and was replaced by a new one. Investigation carried out showed high phosphorous contents in the oxide scale of service exposed AISI 321. Service exposed AISI 321 subjected to the oxidation test in laboratory did not show phosphorous in the oxide scales. The phosphorous presence obstructed the chromia layer from protecting the underlying surface. Formation of coarse chromium carbide and sigma phase in the stainless steel was observed within a short exposure time. This reduced the chromium content below the critical limit required for protective chromia formation. These were the possible reasons of early service failure of the oven

    Study of flow through arteries is gaining importance in the recent times due to onset of several cardio-vascular diseases like atherosclerosis (block in artery), aneurysms (bulging of artery), hypertension etc. The application of CFD will be useful in demonstrating the underlying mechanism of flow past the diseased arteries. In the present study, initially an approximate eccentric and concentric 50% stenosed carotid model is generated in ANSYS 12.0 based on patient data obtained from ultrasound Doppler scan. Later the percentage of stenosis is increased to 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% in both the cases. A transient analysis has been performed for several pulse cycles in ANSYS FLOTRAN for various percentage cases. The results obtained from ECN and CCN cases are compared to observe the changes in flow behavior in the downstream of stenosis as compared with normal case. The formation of vortices and flow separation zone in downstream in eccentric case is higher than in concentric case. Comparison of results concludes that, with the increase in severity of stenosis, the flow changes abruptly causing an increase in velocity and WSS at throat region. The simulation results obtained agree well with clinically observed data and available literature
