    Experimental and numerical study of error fields in the CNT stellarator

    Sources of error fields were indirectly inferred in a stellarator by reconciling computed and numerical flux surfaces. Sources considered so far include the displacements and tilts (but not the deformations, yet) of the four circular coils featured in the simple CNT stellarator. The flux surfaces were measured by means of an electron beam and phosphor rod, and were computed by means of a Biot-Savart field-line tracing code. If the ideal coil locations and orientations are used in the computation, agreement with measurements is poor. Discrepancies are ascribed to errors in the positioning and orientation of the in-vessel interlocked coils. To that end, an iterative numerical method was developed. A Newton-Raphson algorithm searches for the coils' displacements and tilts that minimize the discrepancy between the measured and computed flux surfaces. This method was verified by misplacing and tilting the coils in a numerical model of CNT, calculating the flux surfaces that they generated, and testing the algorithm's ability to deduce the coils' displacements and tilts. Subsequently, the numerical method was applied to the experimental data, arriving at a set of coil displacements whose resulting field errors exhibited significantly improved quantitative and qualitative agreement with experimental results.Comment: Special Issue on the 20th International Stellarator-Heliotron Worksho

    Neurofilament results for the phase II neuroprotection study of phenytoin in optic neuritis

    Background: A randomized trial of phenytoin in acute optic neuritis (ON) demonstrated a 30% reduction in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) loss with phenytoin versus placebo. Here we present the corresponding serum neurofilament analyses. Methods: Eighty-six acute ON cases were randomized to receive phenytoin (4–6 mg/kg/day) or placebo for 3 months, and followed up for 6 months. Serum was collected at baseline, 3 and 6 months for analysis of neurofilament heavy chain (NfH) and neurofilament light chain (NfL). Results: Sixty-four patients had blood sampling. Of these, 58 and 56 were available at 3 months, and 55 and 54 were available at 6 months for NfH and NfL, respectively. There was no significant correlation between serum NfH and NfL at the time points tested. For NfH, the difference in mean placebo – phenytoin was −44 pg/ml at 3 months (P = 0.019) and −27 pg/ml at 6 months (P = 0.234). For NfL, the difference was 1.4 pg/ml at 3 months (P = 0.726) and −1.6 pg/ml at 6 months (P = 0.766). Conclusions: At 3 months, there was a reduction in NfH, but not NFL, in the phenytoin versus placebo group, while differences at 6 months were not statistically significant. This suggests a potential neuroprotective role for phenytoin in acute ON, with the lower NfH at 3 months, when levels secondary to degeneration of the anterior visual pathway are still elevated, but not at 6 months, when levels have normalized

    Physicochemical and Biological Characterisation of Diclofenac Oligomeric Poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) Hybrids as β-TCP Ceramics Modifiers for Bone Tissue Regeneration

    Nowadays, regenerative medicine faces a major challenge in providing new, functional materials that will meet the characteristics desired to replenish and grow new tissue. Therefore, this study presents new ceramic-polymer composites in which the matrix consists of tricalcium phosphates covered with blends containing a chemically bounded diclofenac with the biocompatible polymer-poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate), P(3HO). Modification of P(3HO) oligomers was confirmed by NMR, IR and XPS. Moreover, obtained oligomers and their blends were subjected to an in-depth characterisation using GPC, TGA, DSC and AFM. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the hydrophobicity and surface free energy values of blends decreased with the amount of diclofenac modified oligomers. Subsequently, the designed composites were used as a substrate for growth of the pre-osteoblast cell line (MC3T3-E1). An in vitro biocompatibility study showed that the composite with the lowest concentration of the proposed drug is within the range assumed to be non-toxic (viability above 70%). Cell proliferation was visualised using the SEM method, whereas the observation of cell penetration into the scaffold was carried out by confocal microscopy. Thus, it can be an ideal new functional bone tissue substitute, allowing not only the regeneration and restoration of the defect but also inhibiting the development of chronic inflammation

    Zimbabwe’s land reform: challenging the myths

    Most commentary on Zimbabwe’s land reform insists that agricultural production has almost totally collapsed, that food insecurity is rife, that rural economies are in precipitous decline, that political ‘cronies’ have taken over the land and that farm labour has all been displaced. This paper however argues that the story is not simply one of collapse and catastrophe; it is much more nuanced and complex, with successes as well as failures. The paper provides a summary of some of the key findings from a ten-year study in Masvingo province and the book Zimbabwe’s Land Reform: Myths and Realities. The paper documents the nature of the radical transformation of agrarian structure that has occurred both nationally and within the province, and the implications for agricultural production and livelihoods. A discussion of who got the land shows the diversity of new settlers, many of whom have invested substantially in their new farms. An emergent group ‘middle farmers’ is identified who are producing, investing and accumulating. This has important implications – both economically and politically – for the future, as the final section on policy challenges discusses.ESR

    Greek mothers' perceptions of their cooperation with the obstetrician and the midwife in the delivery room

    Α Ι Μ : The objective of this study was to access the perceptions of mothers of newborns regarding their cooperationwith the midwife and the obstetrician in the delivery room.M A T E R I A L - M E T H O D : The sample consisted of 607 mothers living in Northern Greece. The KuopioInstrument for Mothers (KIM) was used for the data collection.R E S U L T S : All the participants gave birth in a hospital; 403 (66.4%) had vaginal delivery, while 204 (33.6%)gave birth by caesarean section. Women with a vaginal delivery had a better cooperation with the midwife and theobstetrician, in comparison to women who gave birth via caesarean section. The participant mothers had a morepositive experience from their cooperation with the obstetrician than with the midwife.C O N C L U S I O N S : The mothers’ preference for obstetrician’s care than for midwife’s care is probably due tothe commercialisation of gynaecology/obstetrics in Greece, the dramatic increase in the number of obstetriciansover the past decade, and the fact that deliveries carried out solely by midwives have almost disappeared in thecountry. Health policy makers should reinforce the current provision of maternity services and support midwivesto take a more central role during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period

    Intravenous levosimendan-norepinephrine combination during off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting in a hemodialysis patient with severe myocardial dysfunction

    This the case of a 63 year-old man with end-stage renal disease (on chronic hemodialysis), unstable angina and significantly impaired myocardial contractility with low left ventricular ejection fraction, who underwent off-pump one vessel coronary bypass surgery. Combined continuous levosimendan and norepinephrine infusion (at 0.07 μg/kg/min and 0.05 μg/kg/min respectively) started immediately after anesthesia induction and continued for 24 hours. The levosimendan/norepinephrine combination helped maintain an appropriate hemodynamic profile, thereby contributing to uneventful completion of surgery and postoperative hemodynamic stability. Although levosimendan is considered contraindicated in ESRD patients, this case report suggests that combined perioperative levosimendan/norepinephrine administration can be useful in carefully selected hemodialysis patients with impaired myocardial contractility and ongoing myocardial ischemia, who undergo off-pump myocardial revascularization surgery

    Dielectric relaxations of nanocomposites composed of HEUR polymers and magnetite nanoparticles

    We investigate the dynamics of nanocomposites composed of hydrophobically modified ethoxylated urethanes (HEUR) and magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) as dry films. Weemployed dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) in combination with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC).The three techniques reveal a strong heterogeneity of the matrix of the nanocomposites, consisting of (i) a crystalline poly(ethyleneoxide) PEO bulk phase, (ii) an amorphous PEO portion, and (iii) small PEO crystallites which experience different constraints than the PEO bulk phase. TSDC and DRS reveal a very high direct current (DC)-conductivity of the pure matrix, which increases with MNPs concentration. The increase of the DCconductivity is not related to an increase of the segmental mobility, but most likely to the change of the morphology of the hydrophobic domains of the polymer matrix, due to the formation of large MNPs clusters. Indeed, the MNPs neither influence the segmental dynamics of the polymer nor the phase behavior of the polymer matrix. The addition of MNPs slightly increases the activation energy related to the γ-relaxation of the polymer. This effect might be related to the changes in nano-morphology as demonstrated by the slight increase of the degree of crystallinity. The analysis of the DRS data with the electrical modulus M’’(ω) and the derivative ε’’der formalism allow us to identify a low-frequency process in addition to the conductivity relaxation. This low-frequency dispersion is also revealed by TSDC. It is most likely related to the Maxwell-Wagner- Sillars relaxation, which typically occurs in systems which feature phase separation. The detailed investigation of the dielectric properties of these novel nanocomposites with increasing MNPs concentration will be useful for their practical application, for example as absorbers of electromagnetic waves
