    Stability Constraints for Robust Model Predictive Control

    This paper proposes an approach for the robust stabilization of systems controlled by MPC strategies. Uncertain SISO linear systems with box-bounded parametric uncertainties are considered. The proposed approach delivers some constraints on the control inputs which impose sufficient conditions for the convergence of the system output. These stability constraints can be included in the set of constraints dealt with by existing MPC design strategies, in this way leading to the ā€œrobustificationā€ of the MPC

    Urban planning is a key tool to promote health in cities. The COVID-19 emergency accelerated several social, environmental, and digital challenges, stressing the importance of some issues regarding housing, urban mobility, green areas, and health service networks, urban health policies, and actions. These issues were the subject of an intensive residential course (the 57th) held in Erice, Sicily, in June 2021 in the ā€œInternational School of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine G. Dā€™Alessandroā€, and the main findings are described here. Methods. Lectures presented the topics, subsequently developed them, and argued them in parallel practical sessions using the World CafĆ© technique, since it is well suited for the interaction of participants and the involvement of groups. Results. The World CafĆ© provides new insights into how to improve the livability and health of urban spaces, and a set of strategies and actions were proposed for each topic. Discussion and Conclusions. All attendees agreed on the importance of participation in the planning processes, but also on the need for strong political support to ensure the resources needed and a full integration of health with other local policies. A multidisciplinary approach to developing systemic operational capacities and health literacy is considered pivotal to raising awareness and participation

    Author disambiguation using multi-aspect similarity indicators

    Key to accurate bibliometric analyses is the ability to correctly link individuals to their corpus of work, with an optimal balance between precision and recall. We have developed an algorithm that does this disambiguation task with a very high recall and precision. The method addresses the issues of discarded records due to null data fields and their resultant effect on recall, precision and F-measure results. We have implemented a dynamic approach to similarity calculations based on all available data fields. We have also included differences in author contribution and age difference between publications, both of which have meaningful effects on overall similarity measurements, resulting in significantly higher recall and precision of returned records. The results are presented from a test dataset of heterogeneous catalysis publications. Results demonstrate significantly high average F-measure scores and substantial improvements on previous and stand-alone techniques

    MYB suppresses differentiation and apoptosis of human breast cancer cells

    Introduction: MYB is highly expressed in estrogen receptor positive (ER + ve) breast tumours and tumour cell lines. We recently demonstrated that MYB is essential for the proliferation of ER + ve breast cancer cells, and have now investigated its role in mammary epithelial differentiation.Methods: MCF-7 breast cancer cells were treated with sodium butyrate, vitamin E succinate or 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate to induce differentiation as measured by Nile Red staining of lipid droplets and Ī²-casein expression. The non-tumorigenic murine mammary epithelial cell (MEC) line, HC11, was induced to differentiate with lactogenic hormones. MYB levels were manipulated by inducible lentiviral shRNA-mediated knockdown and retroviral overexpression.Results: We found that MYB expression decreases following chemically-induced differentiation of the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7, and hormonally-induced differentiation of a non-tumorigenic murine mammary epithelial cell (MEC) line, HC11. We also found that shRNA-mediated MYB knockdown initiated differentiation of breast cancer cells, and greatly sensitised them to the differentiative and pro-apoptotic effects of differentiation-inducing agents (DIAs). Sensitisation to the pro-apoptotic effects DIAs is mediated by decreased expression of BCL2, which we show here is a direct MYB target in breast cancer cells. Conversely, enforced expression of MYB resulted in the cells remaining in an undifferentiated state, with concomitant suppression of apoptosis, in the presence of DIAs.Conclusions: Taken together, these data imply that MYB function is critical in regulating the balance between proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in MECs. Moreover, our findings suggest MYB may be a viable therapeutic target in breast cancer and suggest specific approaches for exploiting this possibility

    Nuclear ING2 expression is reduced in human cutaneous melanomas

    Cutaneous malignant melanoma is a severe and sometimes life-threatening cancer. The molecular mechanism of melanomagenesis is incompletely understood. Deregulation of apoptosis is probably one of the key factors contributing to the progression of melanoma. The inhibitor of growth (ING) family proteins are candidate tumour suppressors which play important roles in apoptosis. Downregulated expression of ING proteins have been reported in several tumour types, including the loss of nuclear expression of p33ING1b in melanoma. As ING2 exhibits 58.9% homology with p33ING1b, we hypothesized that the aberrant expression of ING2 may be involved in melanomagenesis. Here, we used tissue microarray technology and immunohistochemistry to examine ING2 expression in human nevi and melanoma biopsies. Our data showed that nuclear ING2 expression was significantly reduced in radial growth phase (RGP), vertical growth phase (VGP), and metastatic melanomas compared with dysplastic nevi (P<0.05). Our data also revealed that nuclear ING2 expression was not associated with patient's gender, age or tumour thickness, ulceration, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage, tumour subtype, location and 5-year survival (P>0.05). Taken together, our results suggest that nuclear ING2 expression is significantly reduced in human melanomas and that reduced ING2 may be an important molecular event in the initiation of melanoma development
