Die intensionele afwyking van die norme van Standaardafrikaans in advertensies

The intentional deviation from the norms of Standard Afrikaans in advertising. The visibility of Afrikaans in the market place (media) and the growth of a different type (non-Standard) of Afrikaans in industries such as the music, film, publication industry, et cetera may be indicative of the symbolic and instrumental positioning of Afrikaans in the market place, in contrast to the hostility sometimes experienced in the tertiary education sector. The advertising industry is one such public sphere where Afrikaans is used. Language is used in a distinct manner in different genres which often deviates in a specific way and for specific reasons from the norms of Standard Afrikaans. To classify language as a deviation implies measurement against one or other norm. In the analytical section of this article, the norms (internal, external and universal) of Standard Afrikaans will be applied to print advertising language to motivate the functionality and acceptance of such (strategic) deviation in the construction of a plausible marketing message. Based on the theoretic principles of text linguistics, the intentionality and acceptance of the deviations of the prescribed norms play a significant role in constructing an implied marketing message. This does not imply the acceptance of unintended language errors but intended deviations of the prescribed norms that have a functional (communicative) market-driven role accepted by the intended audience. The study concludes with an overview of the most evident grammatical characteristics of the Afrikaans language in advertising

Die ontwikkeling van [ʃ] in Afrikaans

The development of [ʃ] in Afrikaans. This is a follow-up study on a seemingly recent development of the consonant system of Afrikaans that Wissing, Pienaar and Van Niekerk (2015) reported on. They show that the voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ is produced as the [ʃ], a voiceless postalveolar or alveopalatal fricative when immediately following the rhotic /r/, but as [s] in contexts other than this. To establish whether this phenomenon is characteristic of present-day Afrikaans in contrast to the pronunciation of previous generations, a survey was conducted in which the readings of news bulletins by two groups of radio presenters were analysed regarding their acoustic properties. These groups are representative of two generations of Afrikaans speakers, characterised as Oud [Old] and Jonk [Young]. Apart from the fact that the reading by Oud were recorded one to two decades ago (2000–2006), and those by Jonk during 2017, the average ages of these groups were at the time of recording 29 years for Jonk, and 50 years for Oud. A significant difference between the acoustic properties of the fricative /s/ following /r/ of these two groups was found. More specifically, Jonk, unlike Oud, clearly produced this phoneme as [ʃ]. This shows that notable sound shifts might happen within a relatively short time span. The article is concluded by considering a possible explanation of this recent phenomenon within the realm of theories of internal sound change

The functions of public art in post-apartheid South Africa

Student Number : 0419845J - MA research report - School of Arts - Faculty of HumanitiesThe aim of this research report is to explore the extent to which public art in postapartheid, democratic South Africa may contribute both to urban regeneration and nation building as well as the extent to which contemporary African monumental public art could reflect African heritage and traditions (Nettleton 2003:3). Another issue that is explored is the role of patronage in determining the function of public art in post-apartheid South Africa. Case studies in the form of two examples of post-apartheid public, namely the Freedom Park and the Constitution Hill projects art are used to explore the functions of public art in South Africa. In summary this research report therefore analyses: • The nature and function of public art-historical issues; • The practical issues affecting the production of public art in post-apartheid South Africa; • The socio-political factors that mitigate for or against the ability of public art to function effectively in the post-apartheid South African context; and • How these functions feed into the broader issues of making a contribution in a demographically complex, post-apartheid South Africa

Where human society is involved, the world can never be objective, but is a place where, through cultural power relations, human inequalities are legitimized by meaning, interpretation and value (Hall 1997). At the same time prejudice and stereotyping disguise inequality and enhance the exclusion of certain sectors of society. Mechanisms such as inclusions, exclusions, confusing representations, cultural codes, and silences are relevant stereotyping strategies. In this article the visual representations in Dutch and Afrikaans language textbooks are compared in order to determine the strategies used to address diversity within the textbooks. The conceptual framework and literature review comprise an explication of the concepts and influential issues presented in the literature. Data sources are constituted by the visual material of one textbook series from each of the two language communities. The findings are presented as indicators derived from focus group discussions. Eurocentric perspectives of the dominant white group about the ‘other’ were identified, projecting the ‘other’ as problematic, poor and primitive. The cultural codes in the visual material furthermore generalise the non-Western ‘other’ as either extremely religious or as fundamentally different. No signs of apartheid prejudice could be found in the Afrikaans textbooks and Afrikaans is demythologised as a ‘white’ language. The visual material offers a platform for different, even contradictory, values in order to create a new cultural and social reality, even if the representation, in which everybody speaks Afrikaans, is sometimes forced and unauthentic. Keywords: diversity, representational practices, visual material, language textbooks, Dutch and Afrikaans, stereotyping strategies, thematic analysis, focus group discussionsThe article is in Afrikaans

Afrikaanse musiek en die model van rasionele verslawing

    Get PDF
Rasionele verslawing, bandwagon effek, musiekindustrie, Afrikaanse musiek, huishoudelike produksiefunksie, Advertensie

“Monitoring” the entire “spectrum” : the influence of Journalism Ideology on the content producers of a South African public radio station’s current affairs programmes

    Get PDF
Abstract: More than 20 years after the demise of Apartheid, South African journalists are still in the process of determining their own “journalistic ideology” according to a “Global South” approach. Various scholars argue that this approach should be anchored in African values and philosophies (such as Ubuntu), and take the unique South African context into consideration. In this article, the author has identified certain issues that could influence a reporter’s “journalism ideology”, such as education and training, newsroom routines and the role of the audience. She used these issues as a starting point for open-ended interviews with producers that create and edit content for the Current Affairs shows on RSG, one of the public radio stations at the South African Broadcasting Corporation.1 The media forms part of a network of shifting power relations and in a country where many of its citizens live under the breadline, radio still wields a huge amount of influence. Herman and Chomsky’s propaganda model is used as theoretical framework informing the type of questions the author asks in her qualitative interviews, as she also regards media practitioners’ performance and actions as being strongly influenced by “the basic institutional structures and relationships within which they operate”
