    Vicarious Exposure to Trauma in Australian Migration Agents: The Role of Empathy and Psychological Capital in Compassion Satisfaction

    Australian migration agents may be under pressure in their work helping migrants affected by the global refugee crisis obtain their visas. The present research explored the factors that facilitate positive outcomes from work with traumatised people. Compassion satisfaction is essential for helping professionals, as it enables them to obtain pleasure from being able to help others and to sustain in their work. The current cross-sectional study aimed to examine how empathy and psychological capital affect compassion satisfaction in migration agents. Online survey data was collected from 158 Australian Registered Migration Agents aged 18 to 78 years who had worked with trauma-exposed people. The current research suggested psychological capital as a predictor of compassion satisfaction and it was the first to test a population of migration agents. The present study found evidence that empathy and psychological capital may be important means for promoting compassion satisfaction. Further studies are recommended with larger and more representative samples to confirm the findings and further explore the complex relationship between empathy, psychological capital, and compassion satisfaction

    Utjecaj različitih postupaka maceracije na aromatski profil rosé i crnih vina hrvatske aromatične sorte grožđa Muškat ruža porečki (Vitis vinifera L.)

    The influence of different grape mash maceration treatments on the varietal and secondary aroma profiles of wines produced from an aromatic red grape variety, Muškat ruža porečki, have been investigated. Two essentially different techniques were applied, fermentative maceration at room temperature and prefermentative cryomaceration, both in durations of one, three and five days. Generally, higher concentrations of free and bound varietal aroma compounds were found in wines obtained by maceration at room temperature in relation to cryomaceration. Regarding the effect of the duration of maceration, the highest concentrations were determined in wines obtained by three-day maceration treatments, in both fermentative and cryomaceration treatments. Secondary aroma compounds followed a less uniform pattern. The compounds with the highest odour unit values in all investigated wines were linalool, citronellol, geraniol, β-damascenone, β-ionone, isoamyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl octanoate, isoamyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and diethyl succinate. It has been shown that Muškat ruža porečki is an aromatic variety, producing wines with notable monoterpenol fraction, which are characterized by a typical varietal Muscat aroma with a dominant rose odour accompanied by red fruit nuances. Sensorially, longer maceration treatments improved odour and overall wine quality, together with the intensity and recognisability of varietal Muscat aroma, while short-term cryomaceration emerged as a preferable technique for the production of light rosé wines with pronounced Muscat aroma and low phenolic content. The presented maceration techniques were shown to be applicable for the production of different types of Muškat ruža porečki rosé and red wines.U radu je istražen utjecaj različitih postupaka maceracije masulja na sortni i sekundarni aromatski profil vina proizvedenih od aromatične crne sorte grožđa Muškat ruža porečki. Primjenjene su dvije različite tehnike, i to fermentativna maceracija na sobnoj temperaturi i prefermentativna kriomaceracija, obje tijekom jednog, tri i pet dana. U vinima su dobivenim maceracijom masulja pri sobnoj temperaturi, u usporedbi s vinima proizvedenim kriomaceracijom, pronađene veće koncentracije slobodnih i vezanih spojeva koji pridonose sortnoj aromi. Što se tiče utjecaja trajanja maceracije, najveće su koncentracije tih spojeva utvrđene u vinima dobivenim nakon trodnevne maceracije, bilo fermentativne, bilo kriomaceracije. Sekundarni aromatski spojevi slijedili su manje jedinstven obrazac. Spojevi s najvećim vrijednostima mirisne aktivnosti u svim ispitanim vinima bili su: linalol, zatim citronelol, geraniol, β-damascenon, β-ionon, izoamilni alkohol, 2-feniletanol, etil heksanoat, etil oktanoat, izoamil acetat, etil acetat, i dietil sukcinat. Dokazano je da je Muškat ruža porečki aromatična sorta grožđa, od koje se dobivaju vina sa zamjetnom monoterpenskom frakcijom, karakterizirana tipičnom sortnom muškatnom aromom s dominantnim mirisom ruža, praćenim nijansama crvenog voća. Dulje trajanje maceracije pridonijelo je mirisu i ukupnoj kakvoći vina, naglašavajući intenzitet i prepoznatljivost sortne muškatne arome, dok se kratkotrajna kriomaceracija pokazala kao poželjna tehnika za proizvodnju laganih rosé vina s izraženom muškatnom aromom i niskim sadržajem fenola.     A liquid-helium cooled large-area silicon PIN photodiode x-ray detector

    An x-ray detector using a liquid-helium cooled large-area silicon PIN photodiode has been developed along with a tailor-made charge sensitive preamplifier whose first-stage JFET has been cooled. The operating temperature of the JFET has been varied separately and optimized. The x- and γ\gamma-ray energy spectra for an \nuc{241}{Am} source have been measured with the photodiode operated at 13 K. An energy resolution of 1.60 keV (FWHM) has been obtained for 60-keV γ\gamma rays and 1.30 keV (FWHM) for the pulser. The energy threshold could be set as low as 3 keV. U radu koji slijedi analizira se koncept cjeloživotnog obrazovanja s pozicije načina njegova ostvarenja. S obzirom na to da Hrvatska svoju budućnost vezuje uz europske integracijske procese, pitanje je kakav je položaj Hrvatske u tom pogledu. Presudna uloga nastavnika u ostvarenju cjeloživotnog obrazovanja u ovom se radu analizira u svjetlu recentnih empirijskih istraživanja cjeloživotnog obrazovanja nastavnika i statusa nastavničke profesije u suvremenom hrvatskom društvu.The first decade of the 21 st century in the EU has been marked by the launch of the lifelong learning project. The paper analyses the concept of lifelong learning from the point of view of its realisation. Considering that Croatia plans to shape its future in the context of European integration processes, Croatian position in that respect is yet to be determined. The paper analyses the crucial role of the teacher in the realisation of the concept of lifelong learning through the prism of recent empirical research into lifelong teacher training, taking into account the status of the teaching profession in the modern Croatian society.Eine der Schlüsselrichtlinien der EU im ersten Jahrzehnt des 21. Jahrhunderts ist die Entwicklung der lebenslangen Bildung. In der folgenden Arbeit wird das Konzept der lebenslangen Bildung unter dem Gesichtspunkt seiner Verwirklichungsweise analysiert. Im Hinblick darauf, dass Kroatien seine Zukunft mit den euopäischen Integrationsprozessen verbindet, stellt sich die Frage, in was für einer Lage sich Kroatien diesbezüglich befindet. Die entscheidende Rolle der Lehrer bei der Verwirklichung der lebenslangen Bildung wird in dieser Arbeit im Lichte der rezenten empirischen Untersuchungen zur lebenslangen Lehrerausbildung und zur Stellung des Lehrerberufs in der zeitgenössischen kroatischen Gesellschaft analysiert

    Kao posljedica klimatskih promjena, pretjeranog iskorištavanja prirodnih resursa te zagađenja okoliša nastao je poseban oblik poduzetništva, zeleno poduzetništvo. Zeleno poduzetništvo kao takvo bavi se realizacijom poduzetničkih ideja koje nemaju negativan utjecaj na okoliš, a istodobno su financijski održive. Kao jedan od oblika zelenog poduzetništva ističe se ekološka poljoprivredna proizvodnja. Konvencionalna poljoprivredna proizvodnja dovela je do velikih ekoloških problema, kao što su zakiseljavanje tla, pad sadržaja humusa, te do ostataka pesticida i teških metala u tlu, te do narušavanja zdravlja ljudi. U tom kontekstu došlo je drukčijeg pristupa poljoprivredi, koji se naziva ekološka poljoprivreda. Ekološka poljoprivreda kao način proizvodnje koji ne koristi umjetna gnojiva i pesticide doprinosi očuvanju okoliša, ali i ljudskog zdravlja. Takva poljoprivredna praksa ima sve veće stope rasta u Europi, ali i u Republici Hrvatskoj. U radu se je opisana situacija u poljoprivredi u Republici Hrvatskoj, s naglaskom na ekološkoj poljoprivredi. Također su opisane koje su snage i slabosti ovog načina proizvodnje. Istraživanjem koje je provedeno anketnim upitnikom na ekološkim proizvođačima u Istarskoj županiji došlo se do podataka o tržištu, plasmanu, potporama, te cijenama ekoloških proizvoda. Na kraju se došlo do zaključka da se, iako još uvijek postoje određeni problemi, prvenstveno u neuređenosti tržišta i dosta niskim poticajima ipak isplati postati ekološkim proizvođačem.As a result of climate change, excessive exploitation of natural resources, and environmental pollution special form of entrepreneurship arose, green entrepreneurship. Green entrepreneurship, as such, deals with the realisation of entrepreneurial ideas that do not have a negative impact on the environment while at the same time being financially sustainable. One type of green entrepreneurship that stands out is ecological agricultural production. Conventional agricultural production has led to major environmental problems, such as acidification of soil, decline in humus content, residues of pesticides and heavy metals in the soil, and disturbance of human health. Taking these into consideration, a different approach to agriculture called ecological agriculture is being used. Ecological agriculture as a way of production that does not use artificial fertilizers and pesticides contributes to the preservation of the environment but also to human health. Such agricultural practice has an increasing growth rate in Europe as well as in the Republic of Croatia. This paper describes the situation in agriculture in the Republic of Croatia, with an emphasis on ecological agriculture. Also described are the strengths and weaknesses of this mode of production. The research that was done via questionnaires towards ecological producers in the Istria County resulted in data on the market, product placement, subsidies, and ecological product prices. The conclusion was generated that, although there are still some problems, primarily in chaos in the market and low incentives, it is still worthwhile to become an ecological producer

    The pedagogy of Stjepan Matičević: On the occasion of the hundred and fortieth birth anniversary and the eightieth death anniversary

    U članku koji slijedi analizira se život i rad Stjepana Matičevića (1880. – 1940.). Potječe iz ugledne građanske obitelji iz Srijemske Mitrovice. Nakon završetka studija filozofije, klasične filologije i povijesti te stjecanja doktorata znanosti iz filozofije, gimnazijski je profesor u Osijeku i Senju, a nakon toga profesor u Kraljevskoj muškoj  gornjogradskoj učiteljskoj školi u Zagrebu. Vanjsku suradnju s Mudroslovnim fakultetom, uz istovremeni honorarni rad na Višoj pedagoškoj školi u Zagrebu, na kraju zamjenjuje stalnim namještenjem na Mudroslovnom fakultetu (od 1926. Filozofski fakultet) Sveučilišta u Zagrebu od 1920.do kraja svog života. Nakon Franje pl. Markovića i Đure Arnolda, prvih sveučilišnih profesora koji predaju pedagogiju kao dio filozofije na Fakultetu studentima nastavničkih studija, Stjepan Matičević izdvaja je iz filozofije kao samostalnu znanstvenu disciplinu – poput Johanna FriedrichaHerbarta koji pedagogiju afirmira kao samostalnu znanost u svijetu. Matičević utemeljuje prvi studij pedagogije u Hrvatskoj 1928. godine, od kada se stječu i doktorati znanosti iz tog područja u Hrvatskoj. U osam knjiga i sedamdeset objavljenih članaka na originalan način fundira pedagogijsku znanost. Stjepan Matičević prvi je i ujedno najugledniji sveučilišni profesor pedagogije u Hrvatskoj između dvaju svjetskih ratova. Uz angažman u mnogim prosvjetnim, sveučilišnim i kulturnim organizacijama prvi jei do sada jedini pedagog koji je bio stalni član  Jugoslavenske/Hrvatske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti.The following article analyses the life and work of Stjepan Matičević (1880-1940). He was born in a respectable middle-class family in Srijemska Mitrovica. After graduating in philosophy, classic philology and history and taking a PhD in philosophy, he started teaching at grammar schools in Osijek and Senj, and later at the Royal All-male Upper-town School for Teachers in Zagreb. After working simultaneously as an external associate of the Faculty of Philosophy and apart-time teacher at the College of Pedagogy in Zagreb, he eventually accepted a permanent position at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, in 1920, working there until the end of his life. The first two university lecturers who taught pedagogy as part of philosophy to students taking teaching-oriented programmes of study at the Faculty were noble Franjo Marković and Đuro Arnold. As their successor, Stjepan Matičević separated pedagogy from philosophy asan independent discipline – similarly to the way Johann Friedrich Herbart established pedagogy as an autonomous scholarly field worldwide. Matičević founded the first pedagogy study course in Croatia in 1928, from which time it became possible to obtain a PhD in that field in Croatia. Through his 8 books and 70 published articles, he found an original way to lay the foundations of pedagogy as an independent scholarly discipline. Stjepan Matičević was the first and the most prestigious university professor of pedagogy in Croatia between the two World Wars. Apartfrom being engaged in numerous educational, university and cultural organisations, he remains the first and only pedagogue who was a permanent member of the Yugoslav/Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.</p

    Towards Precision LSST Weak-Lensing Measurement - I: Impacts of Atmospheric Turbulence and Optical Aberration

    The weak-lensing science of the LSST project drives the need to carefully model and separate the instrumental artifacts from the intrinsic lensing signal. The dominant source of the systematics for all ground based telescopes is the spatial correlation of the PSF modulated by both atmospheric turbulence and optical aberrations. In this paper, we present a full FOV simulation of the LSST images by modeling both the atmosphere and the telescope optics with the most current data for the telescope specifications and the environment. To simulate the effects of atmospheric turbulence, we generated six-layer phase screens with the parameters estimated from the on-site measurements. For the optics, we combined the ray-tracing tool ZEMAX and our simulated focal plane data to introduce realistic aberrations and focal plane height fluctuations. Although this expected flatness deviation for LSST is small compared with that of other existing cameras, the fast f-ratio of the LSST optics makes this focal plane flatness variation and the resulting PSF discontinuities across the CCD boundaries significant challenges in our removal of the systematics. We resolve this complication by performing PCA CCD-by-CCD, and interpolating the basis functions using conventional polynomials. We demonstrate that this PSF correction scheme reduces the residual PSF ellipticity correlation below 10^-7 over the cosmologically interesting scale. From a null test using HST/UDF galaxy images without input shear, we verify that the amplitude of the galaxy ellipticity correlation function, after the PSF correction, is consistent with the shot noise set by the finite number of objects. Therefore, we conclude that the current optical design and specification for the accuracy in the focal plane assembly are sufficient to enable the control of the PSF systematics required for weak-lensing science with the LSST.Comment: Accepted to PASP.
