    Modeling Soil Water Contents and Their Effects on Stream Flow in Kentucky

    Soil water contents of eight important soil series in Kentucky were measured periodically during the summer growing season for four years, 1977 through 1980. The soils divided into three groups according to their behavior. The first group (Maury and Crider) is well-drained and never showed excess water above field capacity at any time during the four seasons. The second group (Zanesville, Lowell, Calloway, Grenada and Shelbyville) showed perched water tables at times, especially during the early part of the growing season. The third group was represented by the Huntington soil which has a permanent water table. The in-situ field capacity or upper limits was determined on numerous samples of the Maury, Crider and Shelbyville soil series. Variation within series was rather low, indicating that samples taken at one site are representative of the soil in general. A model for estimating the soil water in each 15 cm layer was developed and proved to work very well with both Maury and Crider soils. Lowell soil was predicted poorly by the model, with other soils being intermediate. A variation of the model which assumed that the lowest layer of the Huntington was always at the upper limit due to a permanent water table also worked well. The water calculated from the model as deep drainage was used as a measure of increase in streamflow and compared to measured streamflow on three watersheds and four soils in 1978 and 1979. The R2 values ranged from 0.41 to 0.95 and the slope, which ideally should be 1.0, ranged from 0.54 to 1.36. The quantitative measure of streamflow was not satisfactory but the prediction of events was quite good. Modifications in the model that seem to be required include provisions for evaporation from foliage with small rains, higher evapotranspiration at lower soil water contents, less deep drainage with small rains and an aquifer storage factor

    Modeling Phosphorus Loading to Lake Allatoona: Implications for Water Quality Trading

    Proceedings of the 2007 Georgia Water Resources Conference, March 27-29, 2007, Athens, Georgia.Lake Allatoona, a large reservoir north of Atlanta Georgia that drains an area of about 2870 km2, is threatened by excessive algal growth and scheduled for a phosphorus (P) TMDL. In this paper, we use the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) computer model to estimate the total P load to Lake Allatoona during the periods 1992-1996 and 2001-2004. We also use the model to estimate the contribution from different sources in the watershed. The total P load to Lake Allatoona increased by 20% between the two time periods. The contribution from point sources decreased from 30% to 13% of the total load due to permit restrictions on P for poultry processing plants. The largest nonpoint source of P was estimated to be forest land use in 1992-1996 accounting for 31% of the load and urban land use in 2001-2004 accounting for 50% of the load. Poultry/cattle land use accounted for 18% in 1992-1996 and 15% in 2001-2004. The implications for a program to trade P credits are: 1) point sources and poultry/cattle operations account for similar percentages of the current load, 2) urban development accounts for most of the current P load and should be brought into a trading program, 3) poultry processing plants that have not upgraded to better P removal technology might trade their current load to wastewater treatment facilities that accept their wastewater, 4) cattle in streams and row crops are not large sources according to our model, and 5) there is little net loss of P to streams during transport to Lake Allatoona so distance of a source from the lake may not be important in a trading scheme.Sponsored and Organized by: U.S. Geological Survey, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Conservation Service, The University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of TechnologyThis book was published by the Institute of Ecology, The University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602-2202.     Streamwater Dissolved Organic Carbon and Total Dissolved Nitrogen: Effects of Timber Harvest in the Georgia Piedmont

    Proceedings of the 2011 Georgia Water Resources Conference, April 11, 12, and 13, 2011, Athens, Georgia.A paired watershed experiment of silvicultural best management practices first initiated in 1973 and harvested in 1974/75 was harvested for a second time in 2004. During the current harvest, BMPs were updated to reflect current guidelines. Stream water yield and physical and chemical attributes were monitored for one year pre-harvest and one year post-harvest. Here we report results for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentrations and fluxes. In the treatment watershed, no response to harvest in the discharge-concentration relationship was observed.     Impact of Poultry Mortality Pits on Farm Groundwater Quality

    Proceedings of the 1999 Georgia Water Resources Conference, March 30 and 31, Athens, Georgia.Results of a 15-county survey revealed that intensive animal agriculture may impact shallow groundwater resources. Objectives of this study are to assess water quality on poultry farms and determine if there is a relationship between waste disposal practices and groundwater quality. Twenty poultry farms representing concentrated areas of commercial poultry production and four major soil provinces were evaluated using site assessments, questionnaires, electromagnetic (EM) survey readings, and chemical and microbiological analysis of domestic well water. Based upon the EM survey results, five farms were instrumented with lysimeters and test wells to determine possible nutrient and microbiological movement to groundwater. Site evaluations revealed that 10 of the 47 (21 %) domestic wells did not have appropriate well head protection to prevent surface water contamination. Five of the 47 (11 %) wells were located downslope and/or within 100 ft. of a nitrogen source other than pits and averaged nitrate-N (N03-N) levels above background (3 ppm). Thirty-eight percent had elevated coliform levels and 10.6% contained Salmonella in at least one sample during the sampling period. EM surveys and monitoring data indicated that nutrients migrate less than 100 ft. laterally down gradient from the pits. Poultry mortality pits on the 20 farms did not appear to elevate nitrate levels above background. Groundwater nitrate-N levels were higher on farms containing uncovered litter stacks. Preliminary results indicate that uncovered litter stacks may have a greater impact on groundwater quality than poultry mortality pits.     Determination of Soil Contaminant Transport Parameters Using Time Domain Reflectometry

    Proceedings of the 1993 Georgia Water Resources Conference, April 20-21, 1993, Athens, Georgia.A recent study of rural shallow drinking wells found that 4.6% of the wells in the Piedmont region of Georgia had nitrate levels above the EPA recommended level of 10 ppm nitrate nitrogen (Tyson and Issac, 1991). The most likely sources of this nitrate are septic systems, fertilizers, and manures. Nitrate transport models such as LEACHN (Wagenet and Hutson, 1989) can be used to investigate the contributions of these sources to groundwater contamination, but the models require soil transport parameters that are difficult to measure.     'This is what democracy looks like' : New Labour's blind spot and peripheral vision

    New Labour in government since 1997 has been roundly criticized for not possessing a clear, coherent and consistent democratic vision. The absence of such a grand vision has resulted, from this critical perspective, in an absence of 'joined-up' thinking about democracy in an evolving multi-level state. Tensions have been all too apparent between the government's desire to exert central direction - manifested in its most pathological form as 'control freakery' - and its democratising initiatives derived from 'third-way' obsessions with 'decentralising', 'empowering' and 'enabling'. The purpose of this article is to examine why New Labour displayed such apparently impaired democratic vision and why it appeared incapable of conceiving of democratic reform 'in the round'. This article seeks to explain these apparent paradoxes, however, through utilising the notion of 'macular degeneration'. In this analysis, the perceived democratic blind spot of New Labour at Westminster is connected to a democratic peripheral vision, which has envisaged innovative participatory and decentred initiatives in governance beyond Westminster

    What Role Does Substance Use Play in Intimate Partner Violence? A Narrative Analysis of In-Depth Interviews With Men in Substance Use Treatment and Their Current or Former Female Partner

    Few studies have examined intimate partner violence (IPV) in relationships where one or both partners are in treatment for substance use, from the perspectives of both members of a couple. This study used thematic and narrative analysis of the accounts of 14 men recruited from substance use services and 14 women who were their current or former intimate partners. Separate researchers interviewed men and women from the same dyad pair. The psychopharmacological effects of substance use (including intoxication, craving, and withdrawal) were rarely the only explanation offered for IPV. Violence was reported to be primed and entangled with sexual jealousy, with perceptions of female impropriety and with women’s opposition to male authority. Both partners reported adversities and psychological vulnerabilities that they considered relevant to conflict and abuse. Male participants were more likely to describe IPV as uncharacteristic isolated events that arose from specific disputes—either aggravated by intoxication or withdrawal or about substance use and its resourcing—whereas women described enduring patterns of abusive behavior often linked to intoxication, craving, withdrawal, and to disputes linked to raising funds for substances. In relationships where both partners used substances, men described the need to protect their partners from addiction and from unscrupulous others while women described highly controlling behavior. In relationships where women were not dependent substance users, they reported the combined effects of psychological and financial abuse often linked to recurring patterns of substance use and relapse. These findings highlight the challenges faced by practitioners working with male perpetrators who use substances as well as the need of those working with women who have been abused to engage with the ways in which hesitance to leave male abusers can be complicated by shared drug dependency

    Randomised controlled trial of food elimination diet based on IgG antibodies for the prevention of migraine like headaches

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Research suggests that food intolerance may be a precipitating factor for migraine like headaches.</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>To evaluate the effectiveness of the ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay) Test and subsequent dietary elimination advice for the prevention of migraine like headaches.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>Randomised controlled trial.</p> <p>Setting</p> <p>Community based volunteers in the UK.</p> <p>Participants</p> <p>Volunteers who met the inclusion criteria for migraine like headaches and had one or more food intolerance were included in the study. Participants received either a true diet (n = 84) or a sham diet (n = 83) sheet. Participants were advised to remove the intolerant foods from their diet for 12 weeks.</p> <p>Main outcome measures</p> <p>Number of headache days over a 12 week period (item A MIDAS questionnaire). Other measures includes the total MIDAS score and total HIT-6 score.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results indicated a small decrease in the number of migraine like headaches over 12 weeks, although this difference was not statistically significant (IRR 1.15 95% CI 0.94 to 1.41, p = 0.18). At the 4 week assessment, use of the ELISA test with subsequent diet elimination advice significantly reduced the number of migraine like headaches (IRR 1.23 95%CI 1.01 to 1.50, p = 0.04). The disability and impact on daily life of migraines were not significantly different between the true and sham diet groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Use of the ELISA test with subsequent diet elimination advice did not reduce the disability or impact on daily life of migraine like headaches or the number of migraine like headaches at 12 weeks but it did significantly reduce the number of migraine like headaches at 4 weeks.</p> <p>Trial registration number</p> <p>ISRCTN: <a href="http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRTCN89559672">ISRTCN89559672</a></p

    In Search of a Trade Mark: Search Practices and Bureaucratic Poetics

    Trade marks have been understood as quintessential ‘bureaucratic properties’. This article suggests that the making of trade marks has been historically influenced by bureaucratic practices of search and classification, which in turn were affected by the possibilities and limits of spatial organisation and technological means of access and storage. It shows how the organisation of access and retrieval did not only condition the possibility of conceiving new trade marks, but also served to delineate their intangible proprietary boundaries. Thereby they framed the very meaning of a trade mark. By advancing a historical analysis that is sensitive to shifts, both in actual materiality and in the administrative routines of trade mark law, the article highlights the legal form of trade mark as inherently social and materially shaped. We propose a historical understanding of trade mark law that regards legal practice and bureaucratic routines as being co-constitutive of the very legal object itself
