“We are all servants here!” Mimar Sinan – architect of the Ottoman Empire
Mimar Sinan is the best known architect of the Ottoman Empire. His origin is uncertain. Sinan started his career as a christian slave. He participated in several campaigns as a member of the yard cavalry and as a military engineer. The success of his war-related buildings helped him to become the chief architectural authorithy of the Empire. His long life, fifty years of which he spent as the chief architect, coincided with the golden age of empire. The conquered areas provided plenty of construction tasks, as well as did the clients, who were aspiring for architectural representation worthy of their rank – among them the monarch and his wider environment. In addition, the empire, not being without financial resources, was also able to realize these plans. He became a symbol of the most glorious era of the Ottoman Empire through his works
Natural conditions in the Carpathian Basin of the middle ages
The analysis of natural conditions is a new field in Hungarian medieval research. This field could only come into existence with the spread of new sources of research, and with the need of drawing the most realistic picture of medieval living conditions with the help of more - previously ignored - data and facts. This field of research may have a special meaning as according to sources of the age, the Carpathian Basin was one of the natural Paradises of Medieval Europe
The Typology of Transition Zones with Shouldered Arches in Iranian Seljuk Structures: Architecture Evolving from Sasanian to Seljuk
Squinches have been historically employed to facilitate the smooth transition from a square base to a circular dome in the transition zone beneath a dome. Their origin dates back to ancient Iranian architecture, and they were invented to address the challenge of supporting a dome on a square base. The shouldered arch style of squinch was initially used in Sasanian architecture. Over time, in Iranian-Islamic architecture, the transition zone with shouldered arches evolved, with Seljuk buildings representing the epitome of this development. The architectural style that emerged during the Seljuk dynasty (1037-1194) in Iran is referred to as Seljuk architecture. This study focused on the transition zones of Seljuk structures with the shouldered arch style of the squinch, examining their typology. The features of the transition zones of eleven case studies were converted into matrices, and the MATLAB programming platform was used for analysis. The findings of this research identified six types of transition zones that are composed of shouldered arches in Iranian Seljuk structures
A kereszt mint életfa
Many marvellous wall paintings are on view in the medieval church of Zsegra. Several layers of later paintings have preserved these very important paintings. This is not a simple cross, but an alive tree with budding branches. It means not the appliance of execution; it is the Tree of Life, the sign of life itself. The Tree of Life is one of the most frequent motifs in human culture whenever and wherever we see it. The Tree of Life, like the axle of the world, symbolically represents the whole world. Different trees personify the Tree of Life in different cultures: palm tree, oak tree, pine and fig tree. The most important two in the Christian culture are the palm tree and the vine stock. Plants and trees were very important in every day life, they served shelter, food, medicine. This is why it is a very popular symbol used in paintings. Plants and trees represent many different symbols of human life. This essay was writen to bring attention to these symbols and help people to understand the importance of the Tree of Life
Szerep község helytörténete
Szerep község a Tiszántúlon, Hajdú-Bihar megye délnyugati szögletében található.
A 18. század elején újjáéledő város a korábbi település elegyengetett romjain alakult ki, ezen a területen tehát régészeti kutatással számos középkori emlék hozható felszínre.
Javaslatok rétegelt-ragasztott fatartók tervezéséhez, gyártásához és üzemeltetéséhez, felmérési és modellezési eredmények alapján - III. rész: A tönkremeneteleket igazoló vizsgálatok és eredményei = Design, fabrication and operation proposals for glued-laminated timber, based on measuring and modelling results - Chapter 3: Failure examinations and their results
A rétegelt-ragasztott fatartók egyre elterjedtebbé váltak az elmúlt 50 évben. A
megfelelő minőségű anyagokból készített rétegelt-ragasztott tartók minőségi
beszerelést és üzemeltetést követően időtállóak, azonban egyre több esetben
fordul elő a rétegelt-ragasztott tartók károsodása és a károsodás miatt egész
tetőszerkezetek életveszélyessé válása. Ebben a cikkben a rétegrepedések és
tönkremenetelek okaihoz kapcsolódó mechanikai vizsgálatok és azok eredményei
kerülnek bemutatásra.
A mechanikai vizsgálatok célja, hogy próbatest szinten megállapítsuk a ciklikusan
változó klimatikus környezet (hőmérséklet, páratartalom) hatását az RR tartók
faanyagára és annak ragasztási síkjaira. Mivel a faanyag rostra merőleges
húzószilárdsága és nyírószilárdsága csekély, a tartókon kialakult delamináció oka,
ezen feszültségek szilárdságot meghaladó mértékében keresendők. Az elvégzett
vizsgálatok is a két szilárdság meghatározására ill. a ciklikusan változó klimatikus
környezet ezen szilárdságokra gyakorolt hatására irányultak.

Glue laminated timber beams have been used in an increasing number of cases in
the past 50 years. Glue laminated beams are durable constructs if they are
manufactured from adequate quality materials and if their installation and
operation are performed to a high quality standard. There are however an
increasing number of cases of glue laminated beams suffering damage and as a
result entire roof structures becoming life-threatening. In this paper we present the
mechanical tests and their results related to the causes of delaminations and
failures. The purpose of mechanical tests is to determine the impact of the cyclically
changing climatic environment (temperature, humidity) on the material and the
gluing planes of glued laminated timber structures on a test specimen level. Since
timber has low tensile and shear strength normal to grain, the cause of
delamination in the structures is to be sought in the excess of stress exceeding the
strength. The performed tests focused on the determination of the two strength
values and the impact of the cyclically changing climatic environment on these
strengths
