Rescaled mean spherical approximation for colloidal mixtures
In this work, the rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) for colloidal mixtures interacting via a DLVO-type potential is developed, and its application to suspensions of highly charged macroions is illustrated. For this purpose we introduce a simple scheme to solve the mean spherical approximation (MSA) for Yukawa mixtures with factorized coupling parameters. This scheme consists of the mapping of the Yukawa system onto a corresponding primitive model system. Such a correspondence is used as a device for the calculation of the static structure functions of the original Yukawa mixture. Within this scheme, a straightforward implementation of the rescaling procedure is performed, which allows for the calculation of partial structure factors in strongly interacting mixtures. The rescaling procedure we use is an extension of that introduced by Hansen and Hayter for monodisperse suspensions. The structure factors obtained with the rescaled mean spherical approximation compare well with computer simulation results. Transfer across Random versus Deterministic Fractal Interfaces
A numerical study of the transfer across random fractal surfaces shows that
their responses are very close to the response of deterministic model
geometries with the same fractal dimension. The simulations of several
interfaces with prefractal geometries show that, within very good
approximation, the flux depends only on a few characteristic features of the
interface geometry: the lower and higher cut-offs and the fractal dimension.
Although the active zones are different for different geometries, the electrode
reponses are very nearly the same. In that sense, the fractal dimension is the
essential "universal" exponent which determines the net transfer.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Culicoides species communities associated with wild ruminant ecosystems in Spain: Tracking the way to determine potential bridge vectors for arboviruses
The genus Culicoides Latreille 1809 is a well-known vector for protozoa, filarial worms and, above all, numerous viruses. The Bluetongue virus (BTV) and the recently emerged Schmallenberg virus (SBV) are responsible for important infectious, non-contagious, insect-borne viral diseases found in domestic ruminants and transmitted by Culicoides spp. Both of these diseases have been detected in wild ruminants, but their role as reservoirs during the vector-free season still remains relatively unknown. In fact, we tend to ignore the possibility of wild ruminants acting as a source of disease (BTV, SBV) and permitting its reintroduction to domestic ruminants during the following vector season. In this context, a knowledge of the composition of the Culicoides species communities that inhabit areas where there are wild ruminants is of major importance as the presence of a vector species is a prerequisite for disease transmission. In this study, samplings were conducted in areas inhabited by different wild ruminant species; samples were taken in both 2009 and 2010, on a monthly basis, during the peak season for midge activity (in summer and autumn). A total of 102, 693 specimens of 40 different species of the genus Culicoides were trapped; these included major BTV and SBV vector species. The most abundant vector species were C. imicola and species of the Obsoletus group, which represented 15% and 11% of total numbers of specimens, respectively. At the local scale, the presence of major BTV and SBV vector species in areas with wild ruminants coincided with that of the nearest sentinel farms included in the Spanish Bluetongue Entomological Surveillance Programme, although their relative abundance varied. The data suggest that such species do not exhibit strong host specificity towards either domestic or wild ruminants and that they could consequently play a prominent role as bridge vectors for different pathogens between both types of ruminants. This finding would support the hypothesis that wild ruminants could act as reservoirs for such pathogens, and subsequently be involved in the reintroduction of disease to livestock on neighbouring farms
Temperature dependence of the anomalous effective action of fermions in two and four dimensions
The temperature dependence of the anomalous sector of the effective action of
fermions coupled to external gauge and pseudo-scalar fields is computed at
leading order in an expansion in the number of Lorentz indices in two and four
dimensions. The calculation preserves chiral symmetry and confirms that a
temperature dependence is compatible with axial anomaly saturation. The result
checks soft-pions theorems at zero temperature as well as recent results in the
literature for the pionic decay amplitude into static photons in the chirally

Comparative study of the use of Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline to treat Anaplasmosis in fattening lambss
Lamb icteric carcasses condemnation due to Anaplasma ovis is causing relevant economic losses. A comparative study was developed on the effects of different antibiotics to treat ovine anaplasmosis in fattening lambs. A total of 100 A. ovis naturally infected lambs were selected and randomly divided into four groups of 25 lambs: Group ID, treated with injectable doxycycline; Group OD, oral doxycycline; Group O, injectable oxytetracycline; and Group C, untreated animals for the control group. Clinical, haematological, and molecular analyses were performed before the treatment and 12 and 45 days after the beginning of the treatments, and carcass condemnation was followed after slaughter. The A. ovis bacterial load was high before the treatments in the four groups and decreased significantly 45 days after treatment in the ID and O Groups (p < 0.001). The parameters that were related to haemolysis showed similar results. At the abattoir, 15 out of the 47 examined carcasses were condemned; 7 of C Group, 6 of OD Group, 2 of O Group, and 0 of ID Group. It can be concluded that injectable doxycycline and oxytetracycline significantly reduce A. ovis bacterial load in blood and carcass condemnation at the abattoir. Further studies are needed in order to confirm these encouraging findings
Multidimensional integration of RDF datasets
Data providers have been uploading RDF datasets on the web to aid researchers and analysts in finding insights. These datasets, made available by different data providers, contain common characteristics that enable their integration. However, since each provider has their own data dictionary, identifying common concepts is not trivial and we require costly and complex entity resolution and transformation rules to perform such integration. In this paper, we propose a novel method, that given a set of independent RDF datasets, provides a multidimensional interpretation of these datasets and integrates them based on a common multidimensional space (if any) identified. To do so, our method first identifies potential dimensional and factual data on the input datasets and performs entity resolution to merge common dimensional and factual concepts. As a result, we generate a common multidimensional space and identify each input dataset as a cuboid of the resulting lattice. Decontamination protocols affect the internal microbiota of ticks
Studies on the microbiota of ticks have promoted hypotheses about the combined effects of the bacterial community, its functional contributions to the tick’s physiology or probable competition effects with some tick-borne pathogens. However, knowledge on the origin of the microbiota of newly hatched larvae is missing. This study aimed to elucidate the source(s) of the microbiota in unfed tick larvae, addressing the composition of the “core microbiota” and the best ways to decontaminate eggs for microbiota studies. We applied laboratory degree bleach washes and/or ultraviolet light treatments on engorged Rhipicephalus australis females and/or their eggs. No significant effects of these treatments on the reproductive parameters of females and the hatching rates of eggs were observed. However, the different treatments did show striking effects on the composition of the microbiota. The results indicated that bleach washes disrupted the internal tick microbiota in females, implying that bleach may have entered the tick and subsequently affected the microbiota. Furthermore, the analyses of results demonstrated that the ovary is a main source of tick microbiota, while the contribution of Gené’s organ (a part of the female reproductive system that secretes a protective wax coat onto tick eggs) or the male’s spermatophore requires further investigation. Further studies are needed to identify best practice protocols for the decontamination of ticks for microbiota studies
