Group theoretic dimension of stationary symmetric \alpha-stable random fields
The growth rate of the partial maximum of a stationary stable process was
first studied in the works of Samorodnitsky (2004a,b), where it was
established, based on the seminal works of Rosi\'nski (1995,2000), that the
growth rate is connected to the ergodic theoretic properties of the flow that
generates the process. The results were generalized to the case of stable
random fields indexed by Z^d in Roy and Samorodnitsky (2008), where properties
of the group of nonsingular transformations generating the stable process were
studied as an attempt to understand the growth rate of the partial maximum
process. This work generalizes this connection between stable random fields and
group theory to the continuous parameter case, that is, to the fields indexed
by R^d.Comment: To appear in Journal of Theoretical Probability. Affiliation of the

Initial development of an ablative leading edge for the space shuttle orbiter
A state-of-the-art preliminary design for typical wing areas is developed. Seven medium-density ablators (with/without honeycomb, flown on Apollo, Prime, X15A2) are evaluated. The screening tests include: (1) leading-edge models sequentially subjected to ascent heating, cold soak, entry heating, post-entry pressure fluctuations, and touchdown shock, and (2) virgin/charred models subjected to bondline strains. Two honeycomb reinforced 30 pcf elastomeric ablators were selected. Roughness/recession degradation of low speed aerodynamics appears acceptable. The design, including attachments, substructure and joints, is presented
Folding model analysis of proton radioactivity of spherical proton emitters
Half lives of the decays of spherical nuclei away from proton drip line by
proton emissions are estimated theoretically. The quantum mechanical tunneling
probability is calculated within the WKB approximation. Microscopic
proton-nucleus interaction potentials are obtained by single folding the
densities of the daughter nuclei with M3Y effective interaction supplemented by
a zero-range pseudo-potential for exchange along with the density dependence.
Strengths of the M3Y interaction are extracted by fitting its matrix elements
in an oscillator basis to those elements of the G-matrix obtained with the
Reid-Elliott soft-core nucleon-nucleon interaction. Parameters of the density
dependence are obtained from the nuclear matter calculations. Spherical charge
distributions are used for calculating the Coulomb interaction potentials.
These calculations provide reasonable estimates for the observed proton
radioactivity lifetimes of proton rich nuclei for proton emissions from 26
ground and isomeric states of spherical proton emitters.Comment: 6 page
Look before you Hop: Conversational Question Answering over Knowledge Graphs Using Judicious Context Expansion
Fact-centric information needs are rarely one-shot; users typically ask follow-up questions to explore a topic. In such a conversational setting, the user's inputs are often incomplete, with entities or predicates left out, and ungrammatical phrases. This poses a huge challenge to question answering (QA) systems that typically rely on cues in full-fledged interrogative sentences. As a solution, we develop CONVEX: an unsupervised method that can answer incomplete questions over a knowledge graph (KG) by maintaining conversation context using entities and predicates seen so far and automatically inferring missing or ambiguous pieces for follow-up questions. The core of our method is a graph exploration algorithm that judiciously expands a frontier to find candidate answers for the current question. To evaluate CONVEX, we release ConvQuestions, a crowdsourced benchmark with 11,200 distinct conversations from five different domains. We show that CONVEX: (i) adds conversational support to any stand-alone QA system, and (ii) outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and question completion strategies

Motion of a random walker in a quenched power law correlated velocity field
We study the motion of a random walker in one longitudinal and d transverse
dimensions with a quenched power law correlated velocity field in the
longitudinal x-direction. The model is a modification of the Matheron-de
Marsily (MdM) model, with long-range velocity correlation. For a velocity
correlation function, dependent on transverse co-ordinates y as 1/(a+|{y_1 -
y_2}|)^alpha, we analytically calculate the two-time correlation function of
the x-coordinate. We find that the motion of the x-coordinate is a fractional
Brownian motion (fBm), with a Hurst exponent H = max [1/2, (1- alpha/4),
(1-d/4)]. From this and known properties of fBM, we calculate the disorder
averaged persistence probability of x(t) up to time t. We also find the lines
in the parameter space of d and alpha along which there is marginal behaviour.
We present results of simulations which support our analytical calculation.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Physical Review
Calculation of minor hysteresis loops under metastable to stable transformations in vortex matter
We present a model in which metastable supercooled phase and stable
equilibrium phase of vortex matter coexist in different regions of a sample.
Minor hysteresis loops are calculated with the simple assumption of the two
phases of vortex matter having field-independent critical current densities. We
use our earlier published ideas that the free energy barrier separating the
metastable and stable phases reduces as the magnetic induction moves farther
from the first order phase transition line, and that metastable to stable
transformations occur in local regions of the sample when the local energy
dissipation exceeds a critical value. Previously reported anomalous features in
minor hysteresis loops are reproduced, and calculated field profiles are
presented.Comment: 9pages, 7 figure
