Psychological correlates of exercise behavior among university students : a study at a major academic transition

    Get PDF
Considerable research evidence for the psychological benefits of regular exercise has been documented in the literature. Affective changes in the mood and emotional states of individuals have also been reported and related with healthy exercise behaviors. Looking for a closer examination of the processes implicated in the behavioral intentions and involvement in regular exercise, a major goal of this investigation was to study the psychological correlates of exercise behavior among university students in the transition from high school to university studies

Review of fiber-optic pressure sensors for biomedical and biomechanical applications

    Get PDF
As optical fibers revolutionize the way data is carried in telecommunications, the same is happening in the world of sensing. Fiber-optic sensors (FOS) rely on the principle of changing the properties of light that propagate in the fiber due to the effect of a specific physical or chemical parameter. We demonstrate the potentialities of this sensing concept to assess pressure in biomedical and biomechanical applications. FOSs are introduced after an overview of conventional sensors that are being used in the field. Pointing out their limitations, particularly as minimally invasive sensors, is also the starting point to argue FOSs are an alternative or a substitution technology. Even so, this technology will be more or less effective depending on the efforts to present more affordable turnkey solutions and peer-reviewed papers reporting in vivo experiments and clinical trials.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Floral parts of Gomphrena globosa L. as a novel alternative source of betacyanins: Optimization of the extraction using response surface methodology

    Get PDF
The present study describes a novel mechanical process for the pigmented parts of Gomphrena globosa L. The effects of the variables of the maceration extraction of betacyanins have not been properly described. Therefore, this study also aims to optimize the conditions that maximize betacyanins extraction from G. globosa as an alternative source. Assisted by response surface methodology, an experimental design was developed for testing the extraction variables (time, temperature, ethanol-water proportion and solid-liquid ratio). The responses used were betacyanins quantification (by HPLC-PDA-MS/ESI and spectrophotometric analysis), the extraction-yield and the colour intensity of the produced powder. The betacyanins identified were gomphrenin and isogomphrenin II and III. The highest betacyanins content ( 45 mg/g) was obtained by 165 min, 25 C, 0% of ethanol and 5 g/L of solid-liquid ratio. The betacyanins content from the floral parts of G. globosa is higher than those normally found in other sources highlighting its industrial application. The authors thank the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) and FEDER under Programme PT2020 for financial support to CIMO (UID/AGR/00690/2013) and L. Fast computational processing for mobile robots' self-localization

    Get PDF
This paper intends to present a different approach to solve the Self-Localization problem regarding a RoboCup’s Middle Size League game, developed by MINHO team researchers. The method uses white field markings as key points, to compute the position with least error, creating an error-based graphic where the minimum corresponds to the real position, that are computed by comparing the key (line) points with a precomputed set of values for each position. This approach allows a very fast local and global localization calculation, allowing the global localization to be used more often, while driving the estimate to its real value. Differently from the majority of other teams in this league, it was important to come up with a new and improved method to solve the traditional slow Self-Localization problem. This work was developed at the Laboratório de Automação e Robótica by MINHO team´s researching and developing team, at University of Minho, under the supervision of Professor A. Fernando Ribeiro and A. Gil Lopes. The knowledge exchanging between the RoboCup’s MSL teams and community contributed greatly for the development of this work. Motion control of mobile autonomous robots using non-linear dynamical systems approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents a solution to the problem of motion control of an autonomous robot, moving in a dynamical and unstable environment. It is based on non-linear dynamical systems, modelling the state variables that define the motion of a robot under an omnidirectional platform, like its direction of navigation and velocity. The approach used, is based on a set of non-linear differential equations that model the evolution of state variables along time, based on the concept of attractors and repellers. In the official RoboCup Middle Size League field, a target is used to attract the robot to a certain position (could be the ball or a desired position to receive the ball), while a repeller could move the robot away from its original path (given by obstacles in the surrounding environment). The research was firstly carried out in a computational simulation environment and later on with robots in a real environmentThis work was developed at the Automation and Robotics Laboratory by MINHO R&D TEAM, University of Minho, under the supervision of Professor A. Pragas quarentenárias A1 e A2 da citricultura baiana.

    Get PDF
