Constrained Superfields and Standard Realization of Nonlinear Supersymmetry
A constrained superfield formalism has been proposed recently to analyze the
low energy physics related to Goldstinos. We prove that this formalism can be
reformulated in the language of standard realization of nonlinear
supersymmetry. New relations have been uncovered in the standard realization of
nonlinear supersymmetry.Comment: 8+1 pages, Latex, expanded discussions on scalar and vector field
A Bound on the Superpotential
We prove a general bound on the superpotential in theories with broken
supersymmetry and broken R-symmetry, 2|W|< f_a F, where f_a and F are the
R-axion and Goldstino decay constants, respectively. The bound holds for weakly
coupled as well as strongly coupled theories, thereby providing an exact result
in theories with broken supersymmetry. We briefly discuss several possible
applications.Comment: 20 page
Towards a Gravitational Analog to S-duality in Non-abelian Gauge Theories
For non-abelian non-supersymmetric gauge theories, generic dual theories have
been constructed. In these theories the couplings appear inverted. However,
they do not possess a Yang-Mills structure but rather are a kind of non-linear
sigma model. It is shown that for a topological gravitational model an analog
to this duality exists.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, no figures, minor correction
The Two Faces of Anomaly Mediation
Anomaly mediation is a ubiquitous source of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking
which appears in almost every theory of supergravity. In this paper, we show
that anomaly mediation really consists of two physically distinct phenomena,
which we dub "gravitino mediation" and "Kahler mediation". Gravitino mediation
arises from minimally uplifting SUSY anti-de Sitter (AdS) space to Minkowski
space, generating soft masses proportional to the gravitino mass. Kahler
mediation arises when visible sector fields have linear couplings to SUSY
breaking in the Kahler potential, generating soft masses proportional to beta
function coefficients. In the literature, these two phenomena are lumped
together under the name "anomaly mediation", but here we demonstrate that they
can be physically disentangled by measuring associated couplings to the
goldstino. In particular, we use the example of gaugino soft masses to show
that gravitino mediation generates soft masses without corresponding goldstino
couplings. This result naively violates the goldstino equivalence theorem but
is in fact necessary for supercurrent conservation in AdS space. Since
gravitino mediation persists even when the visible sector is sequestered from
SUSY breaking, we can use the absence of goldstino couplings as an unambiguous
definition of sequestering.Comment: 21 pages, 1 table; v2, references added, extended discussion in

Anurans from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of western Liaoning, China
BACKGROUND: To date, the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of western Liaoning, China has yielded five monotypic genera of anurans, including Liaobatrachus grabaui, Callobatrachus sanyanensis, Mesophryne beipiaoensis, Dalianbatrachus mengi, and Yizhoubatrachus macilentus. However, the validity and distinctness of these taxa have been questioned. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING: We provide a comprehensive analysis of the Jehol frogs that includes a re-examination of the published taxa as well as an examination of a number of new specimens that have been collected over the past 10 years. The results show that the five previously named taxa can be referred to three species of one genus-Liaobatrachus grabaui, L. beipiaoensis comb. nov. and L. macilentus comb. nov.. The diagnosis of Liaobatrachus is revised, and a new diagnosis is provided for each species of this genus. We also establish Liaobatrachus zhaoi sp. nov., on the basis of a dozen well-preserved specimens from a new locality. This taxon is distinguished by a unique combination of characteristics, including relatively long hind limbs, a rounded rather than triangular acetabulum, and a gradually-tapering cultriform process of the parasphenoid. In addition, an unnamed frog from a higher horizon, which has narrow sacral diapophyses and particularly long legs, is different from Liaobatrachus and represents another form of anuran in the Jehol Biota. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Comparisons with other Mesozoic and extant anurans and the primary phylogenetic analysis both suggest that Liaobatrachus is a member of the anuran crown-group and forms a polytomy with leiopelmatids (Ascaphus and Leiopelma) and the remaining crown-group anurans (Lalagobatrachia).Liping Dong, Zbyněk Roček, Yuan Wang, Marc E H. Discrete approaches to quantum gravity in four dimensions
The construction of a consistent theory of quantum gravity is a problem in
theoretical physics that has so far defied all attempts at resolution. One
ansatz to try to obtain a non-trivial quantum theory proceeds via a
discretization of space-time and the Einstein action. I review here three major
areas of research: gauge-theoretic approaches, both in a path-integral and a
Hamiltonian formulation, quantum Regge calculus, and the method of dynamical
triangulations, confining attention to work that is strictly four-dimensional,
strictly discrete, and strictly quantum in nature.Comment: 33 pages, invited contribution to Living Reviews in Relativity; the

Contact Terms, Unitarity, and F-Maximization in Three-Dimensional Superconformal Theories
We consider three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories on a
three-sphere and analyze their free energy F as a function of background gauge
and supergravity fields. A crucial role is played by certain local terms in
these background fields, including several Chern-Simons terms. The presence of
these terms clarifies a number of subtle properties of F. This understanding
allows us to prove the F-maximization principle. It also explains why computing
F via localization leads to a complex answer, even though we expect it to be
real in unitary theories. We discuss several corollaries of our results and
comment on the relation to the F-theorem.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure; references added, minor change
