    3D finite compartment modeling of formation and healing of bruises may identify methods for age determination of bruises

    Simulating the spatial and temporal behavior of bruises may identify methods that allow accurate age determination of bruises to assess child abuse. We developed a numerical 3D model to simulate the spatial kinetics of hemoglobin and bilirubin during the formation and healing of bruises. Using this model, we studied how skin thickness, bruise diameter and diffusivities affect the formation and healing of circular symmetric bruises and compared a simulated bruise with a natural inhomogeneous bruise. Healing is faster for smaller bruises in thinner and less dense skin. The simulated and natural bruises showed similar spatial and temporal dynamics. The different spatio-temporal dynamics of hemoglobin and bilirubin allows age determination of model bruises. Combining our model predictions with individual natural bruises may allow optimizing our model parameters. It may particularly identify methods for more accurate age determination than currently possible to aid the assessment of child abuse

    An IPW estimator for mediation effects in hazard models: with an application to schooling, cognitive ability and mortality

    Large differences in mortality rates across those with different levels of education are a well-established fact. Cognitive ability may be affected by education so that it becomes a mediating factor in the causal chain. In this paper, we estimate the impact of education on mortality using inverse-probability-weighted (IPW) estimators. We develop an IPW estimator to analyse the mediating effect in the context of survival models. Our estimates are based on administrative data, on men born between 1944 and 1947 who were examined for military service in the Netherlands between 1961 and 1965, linked to national death records. For these men, we distinguish four education levels and we make pairwise comparisons. The results show that levels of education have hardly any impact on the mortality rate. Using the mediation method, we only find a significant effect of education on mortality running through cognitive ability, for the lowest education group that amounts to a 15% reduction in the mortality rate. For the highest education group, we find a significant effect of education on mortality through other pathways of 12%

    Microbial Community Dynamics and Response to Plant Growth-Promoting Microorganisms in the Rhizosphere of Four Common Food Crops Cultivated in Hydroponics

    Plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPMs) of the plant root zone microbiome have received limited attention in hydroponic cultivation systems. In the framework of a project aimed at the development of a biological life support system for manned missions in space, we investigated the effects of PGPMs on four common food crops (durum and bread wheat, potato and soybean) cultivated in recirculating hydroponic systems for a whole life cycle. Each crop was inoculated with a commercial PGPM mixture and the composition of the microbial communities associated with their root rhizosphere, rhizoplane/endosphere and with the recirculating nutrient solution was characterised through 16S- and ITStargeted Illumina MiSeq sequencing. PGPM addition was shown to induce changes in the composition of these communities, though these changes varied both between crops and over time. Microbial communities of PGPM treated plants were shown to be more stable over time. Though additional development is required, this study highlights the potential benefits that PGPMs may confer to plants grown in hydroponic systems, particularly when cultivated in extreme environments such as space

    Differential Activation of the Periaqueductal Gray by Mild Anxiogenic Stress at Different Stages of the Estrous Cycle in Female Rats

    The effect of acute exposure to mild anxiogenic stress on cutaneous nociceptive threshold was investigated in female Wistar rats at different stages of the estrous cycle. Baseline tail flick latencies did not change significantly during the cycle. However after brief exposure to vibration stress (4 Hz for 5 min), rats in late diestrus, but not at other cycle stages, developed a hyperalgesia (decrease in tail flick latency). Animals in late diestrus revealed a more than fivefold increase in the density of Fos-like immunoreactive nuclei in the dorsolateral, lateral, and ventrolateral columns in the caudal half of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG). There was no change in the density of Fos-like immunoreactive nuclei in the PAG in rats in estrus and early diestrus, although rats in proestrus showed a smaller (50%) but significant increase. Rats undergoing withdrawal from a progesterone dosing regimen (5 mg/kg i.p. twice daily for 6 days) designed to mimic the fall in progesterone that occurs naturally during late diestrus, exhibited a stress-induced hyperalgesia that was similar to animals in late diestrus and a significant increase in Fos-positive cells in the PAG. We suggest that falling levels of progesterone during late diestrus may be a predisposing factor for the development of stress-induced hyperalgesia, which is linked to differential activation of descending pain control circuits in the PAG. Similar changes in women, when progesterone levels fall during the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, may contribute to the development of premenstrual symptoms that include increased anxiety and hyperalgesia
