    Finding Best Compiler Options for Critical Software Using Parallel Algorithms

    The efficiency of a software piece is a key factor for many systems. Real-time programs, critical software, device drivers, kernel OS functions and many other software pieces which are executed thousands or even millions of times per day require a very efficient execution. How this software is built can significantly affect the run time for these programs, since the context is that of compile-once/run-many. In this sense, the optimization flags used during the compilation time are a crucial element for this goal and they could make a big difference in the final execution time. In this paper, we use parallel metaheuristic techniques to automatically decide which optimization flags should be activated during the compilation on a set of benchmarking programs.     Enhancement of Hydrolysis through the Formation of Mixed Heterometal Species: Al3+/CH3Sn3+ Mixtures

    ABSTRACT: The hydrolysis of mixed-metal cations (Al3+/CH3Sn3+) was studied in aqueous solutions of NaNO3, at I = 1.00 ± 0.05 mol·dm−3 and T = 298.15 K, by potentiometric technique. Several hydrolytic mixed species are formed in this mixed system, namely, Alp(CH3Sn)q(OH)r with (p, q, r) = (1, 1, 4), (1, 1, 5), (1, 1, 6), (2, 1, 4), (1, 2, 5), (1, 4, 11), (1, 3, 8), and (7, 6, 32). The stability of these species, expressed by the equilibrium: pAl3+ + qCH3Sn3+ + rOH− = Alp(CH3Sn)q(OH)r 3(p+q)−r, βpqr OH, can be modeled by the empirical relationship: log βpqr OH = −3.34 + 2.67p + 9.23(q + r). By using the equilibrium constant Xpqr relative to the formation reaction: pAl(p+q)(OH)r + q(CH3Sn)(p+q)(OH)r = (p + q)Alp(CH3Sn)q(OH)r, it was found that the formation of heterometal mixed species is thermodynamically favored, and the extra stability can be expressed as a function of the difference in the stability of parent homometal species. This leads, in turn, to a significant enhancement of hydrolysis and solubility

    High intensity exercise downregulates FTO mRNA expression during the early stages of recovery in young males and females

    Background: Physical exercise and activity status may modify the effect of the fat mass- and obesity-associated (FTO) genotype on body weight and obesity risk. To understand the interaction between FTO's effect and physical activity, the present study investigated the effects of high and low intensity exercise on FTO mRNA and protein expression, and potential modifiers of exercise-induced changes in FTO in healthy-weighted individuals. Methods: Twenty-eight untrained males and females (25.4 ± 1.1 years; 73.1 ± 2.0 kg; 178.8 ± 1.4 cm; 39.0 ± 1.2 ml.kg.min- 1 VO2peak) were genotyped for the FTO rs9939609 (T > A) polymorphism and performed isocaloric (400 kcal) cycle ergometer exercise on two separate occasions at different intensities: 80% (High Intensity (HI)) and 40% (Low Intensity (LO)) VO2peak. Skeletal muscle biopsies (vastus lateralis) and blood samples were taken pre-exercise and following 10 and 90 mins passive recovery. Results: FTO mRNA expression was significantly decreased after HI intensity exercise (p = 0.003). No differences in basal and post-exercise FTO protein expression were evident between FTO genotypes. Phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Akt substrate of 160 kDa (AS160) were significantly increased following HI intensity exercise (p 0.05). However, skeletal muscle glucose accumulation at 10 mins following HI (p = 0.021) and LO (p = 0.033) intensity exercise was greater in AA genotypes compared to TT genotypes. Conclusion: Our novel data provides preliminary evidence regarding the effects of exercise on FTO expression in skeletal muscle. Specifically, high intensity exercise downregulates expression of FTO mRNA and suggests that in addition to nutritional regulation, FTO could also be regulated by exercise.     An effective all-atom potential for proteins

    We describe and test an implicit solvent all-atom potential for simulations of protein folding and aggregation. The potential is developed through studies of structural and thermodynamic properties of 17 peptides with diverse secondary structure. Results obtained using the final form of the potential are presented for all these peptides. The same model, with unchanged parameters, is furthermore applied to a heterodimeric coiled-coil system, a mixed alpha/beta protein and a three-helix-bundle protein, with very good results. The computational efficiency of the potential makes it possible to investigate the free-energy landscape of these 49--67-residue systems with high statistical accuracy, using only modest computational resources by today's standards

    Latin American immigrants in Indianapolis: Perceptions of prejudice and discrimination

    The article focuses on immigrants’ interactions with the Indiana natives, with emphasis in the city of Indianapolis and its suburbs. More specifically, this study aims at providing an understanding of the experiences of Latin American immigrants with special attention to perceptions of prejudice and discrimination and to feelings of social exclusion. A substantial proportion of Latin American immigrants interviewed indicated that they considered Indiana natives to be prejudiced and that they had personally experienced discrimination. The study reveals specific examples of discrimination experienced by the immigrants at the work place, in housing, in stores, restaurants and by various service providers. The results of the study demonstrate the relevance of the normative and power resource theories to explain prejudice and discrimination

    Can narratives of white identity reduce opposition to immigration and support for Hard Brexit? A survey experiment

    Britain’s vote to leave the European Union highlights the importance of white majority opposition to immigration. This article presents the results of a survey experiment examining whether priming an open form of ethno-nationalism based on immigrant assimilation reduces hostility to immigration and support for right-wing populism in Britain. Results show that drawing attention to the idea that assimilation leaves the ethnic majority unchanged significantly reduces hostility to immigration and support for Hard Brexit in the UK. Treatment effects are strongest among UKIP, Brexit and white working-class voters. This is arguably the first example of an experimental treatment leading to more liberal immigration policy preferences

    Medicinal plants used by the Yi ethnic group: a case study in central Yunnan

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper is based on ethnomedicinal investigation conducted from 1999–2002 in Chuxiong, central Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The Yi medicine has made a great contribution to the ethnomedicinal field in China. Neither case studies nor integrated inventories have previously been conducted to investigate the traditional Yi plants. This paper aims to argue the status and features of medicinal plants used in traditional Yi societies through a case study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The approaches of ethnobotany, anthropology, and participatory rural appraisal were used in the field surveys. Twenty-two informants in four counties were interviewed during eight field trips. Medicinal plant specimens were identified according to taxonomic methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred sixteen medicinal plant species were found to be useful by the local people in the treatment of various diseases or disorders, especially those relating to trauma, gastrointestinal disorders and the common cold. Among these 116 species, 25 species (21.55%) were found to have new curative effects and 40 species (34.48%) were recorded for their new preparation methods; 55 different species were used in treating wounds and fractures, and 47 were used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Traditional Yi herbal medicines are characterized by their numerous quantities of herbaceous plants and their common preparation with alcohol.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Totally 116 species in 58 families of medicinal plants traditionally used by the Yi people were inventoried and documented. The characteristics of medicinal plants were analyzed. Some new findings (such as new curative effects and new preparation methods) were recorded These newly gathered ethnobotanical and medicinal data are precious sources for the future development of new drugs, and for further phytochemical, pharmacological and clinical studies.</p
