New MR sequences in daily practice: susceptibility weighted imaging. A pictorial essay
Background Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is a
relatively new magnetic resonance (MR) technique that
exploits the magnetic susceptibility differences of various
tissues, such as blood, iron and calcification, as a new
source of contrast enhancement. This pictorial review is
aimed at illustrating and discussing its main clinical
applications.
Methods SWI is based on high-resolution, threedimensional
(3D), fully velocity-compensated gradientecho
sequences using both magnitude and phase images.
A phase mask obtained from the MR phase images is
multiplied with magnitude images in order to increase the
visualisation of the smaller veins and other sources of
susceptibility effects, which are displayed at best after postprocessing
of the 3D dataset with the minimal intensity
projection (minIP) algorithm.
Results SWI is very useful in detecting cerebral microbleeds
in ageing and occult low-flow vascular malformations,
in characterising brain tumours and degenerative diseases of the brain, and in recognizing calcifications in
various pathological conditions. The phase images are
especially useful in differentiating between paramagnetic
susceptibility effects of blood and diamagnetic effects of
calcium. SWI can also be used to evaluate changes in iron
content in different neurodegenerative disorders.
Conclusion SWI is useful in differentiating and characterising
diverse brain disorders
Effects of maternal and paternal smoking on attentional control in children with and without ADHD
Maternal smoking during pregnancy is a risk factor for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but data on its adverse effects on cognitive functioning are sparse and inconsistent. Since the effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy may be due to correlated genetic risk factors rather than being a pure environmental effect, we examined the effect of prenatal exposure to smoking on attentional control, taking into account the effects of both maternal and paternal smoking, and examined whether these effects were genetically mediated by parental genotypes. We further examined whether the effect of prenatal exposure to smoking on attentional control interacted with genotypes of the child. Participants were 79 children with ADHD, ascertained for the International Multi-centre ADHD Gene project (IMAGE), and 105 normal controls. Attentional control was assessed by a visual continuous performance task. Three genetic risk factors for ADHD (DRD4 7-repeat allele of the exon 3 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR), DAT1 10/10 genotype of the VNTR located in the 3′ untranslated region, and the DAT1 6/6 genotype of the intron 8 VNTR) were included in the analyses. Paternal smoking had a negative effect on attentional control in children with ADHD and this effect appeared to be mediated by genetic risk factors. The prenatal smoking effect did not interact with genotypes of the child. Maternal smoking had no main effect on attentional control, which may be due to lower smoking rates. This study suggests that the effects of paternal smoking on attentional control in children with ADHD should be considered a proxy for ADHD and/or smoking risk genes. Future studies should examine if the results can be generalized to other cognitive domains

How different is it really? – rural and urban primary students’ use of ICT in mathematics
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) offers the potential for changing mathematics education for both teachers and students. However, how ICT is used, and by whom, is critical to realizing this potential. This paper reports on an investigation of the use of ICT in the learning and teaching of mathematics in rural and urban primary schools in Victoria, Australia. Thirty-six teachers and almost 700 students were surveyed regarding their use of ICT for mathematics at home and at school, with a small number of selected teachers and students taking part in interviews. This paper focuses on students’ perceptions of ICT use. A comparison of rural and urban students’ responses shows little difference across most aspects of ICT use, and where there was a difference, the frequency of rural use almost always exceeded that in urban schools
