    FIRST EVIDENCE OF OPUNTIA FICUS INDICA LEAVES USED AS SURFACE FINISHING TREATMENTS ON THE PIETRA LECCESE

    Lecce stone belongs to the group of Miocene limestone and is distributed in many areas of the Salento peninsula. The great part of the historical buildings, both religious and civil, in this area have been constructed with this porous and soft material. In the past, various methods and recipes have been used to protect the surfaces and ensure their longevity. However, these ancient "recipes" are unidentified, because these techniques were known only by the artisans who used them [2]. For this purpose, selected religious and civil buildings in the territory of the province of Lecce, made of Lecce stone, not yet restored and possibly treated with some of these unknown recipes because of their good conservation state, were studied and the presence of surface treatments was investigated. Samples were analysed by Py/GC-MS with and without thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). The results of the analyses showed that these buildings have been protected with different natural products. Moreover, for the first time, chemical biomarkers demonstrating the use of prickly pear leaves (Opuntia ficus indica [3]) as protective surface finishes have been identified

    Z' Coupling Information from the LHeC

    If the LHC discovers a Z′Z'-like state the extraction of its couplings to the particles of the Standard Model becomes mandatory in order to determine the nature of the underlying new physics theory. It has been well-known for some time that the direct measurements performed at the LHC in the Drell-Yan channel cannot determine these parameters uniquely in a model-independent manner even if large integrated luminosities, ∼100fb−1\sim 100 fb^{-1}, become available and the Z′Z' is relatively light \lsim 1.5 TeV. Here we examine the possibility that a proposed eL,R±pe_{L,R}^\pm p collider upgrade at the LHC, the LHeC, with s=1.5−2\sqrt s=1.5-2 TeV could be helpful with such coupling determinations in the years before a Linear Collider is constructed. We show that the polarization and charge asymmetries constructed from the cross sections for these processes can be useful in this regard depending upon the specific values of the particular Z′Z' model parameters.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figs, minor modification

    Non-invasive tool to assess heart rhythm in Zebrafish embryos

    In the last years the zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as model organism for cardiac research, in spite of the morphological differences with the human heart. In consequence of the similarity to humans in the early function, the zebrafish embryo has been suggested as an ideal model i) to study the molecular mechanism of cardiac development, and ii) to identify genes related to congenital cardiac defects in human [1]. The overall similarity of zebrafish embryos and human, in responses to human cardiotoxic drugs, was demonstrated, for example, in drug-induced cardiac arrhythmia [2]. For this reason, several methods have been developed to assess cardiac functions in zebrafish embryos [3,4]. Unfortunately, all these techniques suffer from drawbacks (time consuming, skillful operator are ended to perform the experiments) which limit their applications for large scale studies. The development in digital imaging has recently made analysis of cardiac functions in genetically modified transparent zebrafish embryos easier. This allowed to assess non-invasively heart rate variability in zebrafish embryos from videos of beating heart, but without measuring heartbeat rhythm, an important indicator of the cardiac function (heartbeat regularity is associated with cardiotoxicity in humans [1]), from power spectrum of heart signal. In the present study, we present a simple, non-invasive method that, by video-recording embryo images using confocal microscopy, and integrating image processing and power spectral analysis, allows to measure the heartbeat rhythm in zebrafish embryos heart chambers (atrium, ventricle, bulb) (Figure 1). The reliability of the herein proposed method was verified. Some embryos undergone treatment by tricaine, a cardiac anaesthetizing drug, in consequence of which a decrease of the heart rate is expected: the heartbeat regularity in tricaine- treated embryos determined from power spectral analysis decreased as compared to no-treated embryos. The results demonstrated that our method is able to assess the cardiac physiology, in term of heart rhythm, in zebrafish embryos

    The P2X7 Receptor 489C>T Gain of Function Polymorphism Favors HHV-6A Infection and Associates With Female Idiopathic Infertility

    The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is an ATP-gated ion channel known for its proinflammatory activity. Despite its participation in host defense against pathogens, the role played in viral infections, notably those caused by herpes viruses, has been seldom studied. Here we investigated the effect of P2X7R expression on human herpes virus 6 A (HHV-6A) infection of P2X7R-expressing HEK293 cells. We show that functional P2X7R increases while its blockade decreases viral load. Interestingly, HHV-6A infection was enhanced in HEK293 cells transfected with P2X7R cDNA bearing the gain of function 489C>T SNP (rs208294, replacing a histidine for tyrosine at position 155). The P2X7R 489C>T polymorphism correlated with HHV-6A infection also in a cohort of 50 women affected with idiopathic infertility, a condition previously shown to correlate with HHV-6A infection. None of the infertile women infected by HHV-6A was homozygote for 489CC genotype, while on the contrary HHV-6A infection significantly associated with the presence of the rs208294 allele. Levels of soluble human leukocyte antigen G (sHLA-G), a factor promoting embryo implant, measured in uterine flushings negatively correlated with the 489TT genotype and HHV-6A infection, while proinflammatory cytokines interleukins 1α (IL-1α), 1β (IL-1β), and 8 (IL-8) positively correlated with both the 489T allele presence and viral infection. Taken together these data point to the P2X7R as a new therapeutic target to prevent HHV-6A infection and the associated infertility

    The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca + 12C at 25 MeV/nucleon was used to produce alpha-emission sources.
