-Theory of Truncated Polynomials
We study the algebraic -theory of rings of the form . We do this
via trace methods and filtrations on topological Hochschild homology and
related theories by quasisyntomic sheaves. We produce computations for a
perfectoid ring in terms of the big Witt vectors of , for a smooth curve
over a perfectoid ring in terms of the prismatic cohomology of , and for
a complete mixed characteristic discrete valuation rings with perfect residue
field in terms of the prismatic cohomology and Hodge-Tate divisor of .Comment: 31 pages, comments welcom
A Qualitative Analysis of the Therapeutic Alliance From the Perspective of Adolescents Who Stutter
There has been research outlining the importance of the client-clinician relationship in therapeutic outcomes; however, there is a relative lack of research as to the development of the therapeutic alliance in the area of fluency therapy, particularly with adolescents. The purpose of this investigation was to learn about the perceptions of adolescents who stutter regarding characteristics of effective and ineffective speech-language pathologists as well as how these adolescents perceive their own and their speech-language pathologist’s role in the therapeutic alliance. This study addressed the following questions: Q1 How do adolescents with fluency disorders describe their role within the therapeutic alliance? Q2 How do adolescents with fluency disorders describe their speech-language pathologists’ role within the therapeutic alliance? Q3 How do adolescents with fluency disorders perceive factors common across clinicians as they relate to an effective therapeutic experience? Q4 How do adolescents with fluency disorders perceive factors common across clinicians as they relate to an ineffective therapeutic experience? The phenomenological method of qualitative research was employed as a framework to interview three participants who were adolescents who stuttered. Four themes emerged during data analysis as key factors that impacted the development of a client-clinician relationship: adolescents’ trust of the SLP, adolescents’ investment in therapy, partnership and collaboration in therapy, and building a therapeutic alliance. These themes were discussed and may be considered in the treatment of adolescents who stutter in order to develop strong therapeutic alliance
Oblique Shock Wave Diffuser Design
In this Honors Research Project, I will investigate the aerodynamic drag on certain defined ramps and cone/cylinder geometries representing oblique shock wave diffusers. The goal is to develop an oblique shock wave diffuser that decelerates supersonic air while maintaining a limited aerodynamic drag profile. The aerodynamic drag will first be obtained by calculating the pressure coefficient and the skin friction coefficient using the fluid simulation software ANSYS Fluent (version 2019). Limiting drag is important for aircraft flight performance, especially at supersonic speeds. At flight speeds above Mach 1, shock waves form and the air passing through these waves experiences a dramatic increase in pressure, density and temperature. For proper function of air-breathing supersonic aircraft engines, supersonic air must be decelerated to subsonic flow in a diffuser, or the shock waves will cause damage to the engines. Oblique shock waves create less stagnation pressure loss than normal shock waves, which allows for increased flight performance. This research will deepen our understanding of how the design of oblique shock wave diffusers affects drag
Plato's philosophy of education in the early dialogues.
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 320-333).This thesis, Plato's Philosophy of Education in the Early Dialogues, is, as the title would suggest, concerned with the ideas on education that Plato discusses in the early dialogues. Plato's use of the dialogue and the Socratic method place him among the foremost teachers of all time, and some of his practical suggestions, and his educational precepts are extremely cogent, but- it is with education in the larger sense of paideia or culture that this thesis is concerned. It has tried to analyze the place of education in relation to the development of Plato's philosophy by means of what here has been called "the educational argument."[TRUNCATED]
Much of Plato's philosophy, and especially the idea of the authoritarian Philosopher-King is considered by some contemporary thinkers to be inimical to democracy; but Plato's definition of democracy and the modern ideal of representative democracy are vastly different, whereas the principles that are symbolized by Socrates and the Philosopher-King need only be translated into modern terms for many of them to be completely in harmony with the best traditions of representative democracy. Plato's analysis of education and its relation to human happiness and society are especially valuable to an understanding of the fundamental problems of modern education
On The Algebraic -Theory of Double Points
In this paper, we use trace methods to study the algebraic -theory of
rings of the form . We compute the
relative -adic groups for a perfectoid ring. In particular, we get
the integral groups when is a finite field, and the integral relative
groups
when is a perfect -algebra. We conclude the paper with some
other notable computations, including some rings which are not quite of the
above form.Comment: 24 pages. Added the case p=2. Also added section 4 to fix a mistake
