Transition into a low temperature superconducting phase of unconventional pinning in Sr_2RuO_4
We have found a sharp transition in the vortex creep rates at a temperature
T^\ast=0.05 T_c in a single crystal of Sr_2RuO_4 (T_{c}=1.03 K) by means of
magnetic relaxation measurements. For T<T^\ast, the initial creep rates drop to
undetectable low levels. One explanation for this transition into a phase with
such extremely low vortex creep is that the low-temperature phase of Sr_2RuO_4
breaks time reversal symmetry. In that case, degenerate domain walls separating
discreetly degenerate states of a superconductor can act as very strong pinning

The Formation of Fragments at Corotation in Isothermal Protoplanetary Disks
Numerical hydrodynamics simulations have established that disks which are
evolved under the condition of local isothermality will fragment into small
dense clumps due to gravitational instabilities when the Toomre stability
parameter is sufficiently low. Because fragmentation through disk
instability has been suggested as a gas giant planet formation mechanism, it is
important to understand the physics underlying this process as thoroughly as
possible. In this paper, we offer analytic arguments for why, at low ,
fragments are most likely to form first at the corotation radii of growing
spiral modes, and we support these arguments with results from 3D hydrodynamics

Theory for Metal Hydrides with Switchable Optical Properties
Recently it has been discovered that lanthanum, yttrium, and other metal
hydride films show dramatic changes in the optical properties at the
metal-insulator transition. Such changes on a high energy scale suggest the
electronic structure is best described by a local model based on negatively
charged hydrogen (H) ions. We develop a many-body theory for the strong
correlation in a H ion lattice. The metal hydride is described by a large
-limit of an Anderson lattice model. We use lanthanum hydride as a prototype
of these compounds, and find LaH is an insulator with a substantial gap
consistent with experiments. It may be viewed either as a Kondo insulator or a
band insulator due to strong electron correlation. A H vacancy state in LaH
is found to be highly localized due to the strong bonding between the electron
orbitals of hydrogen and metal atoms. Unlike the impurity states in the usual
semiconductors, there is only weak internal optical transitions within the
vacancy. The metal-insulator transition takes place in a band of these vacancy

Pharmacokinetic profile and quantitation of protection against soman poisoning by the antinicotinic compound MB327 in the guinea-pig
Current organophosphorus nerve agent medical countermeasures do not directly address the nicotinic effects of poisoning. A series of antinicotinic bispyridinium compounds has been synthesized in our laboratory and screened in vitro. Their actions can include open-channel block at the nicotinic receptor which may contribute to their efficacy. The current lead compound from these studies, MB327 1,1′-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(4-tert-butylpyridinium) as either the diiodide (I2) or dimethanesulfonate (DMS) has been examined in vivo for efficacy against nerve agent poisoning. MB327 I2 (0–113 mg kg−1) or the oxime HI-6 DMS (0–100 mg kg− 1), in combination with atropine and avizafone (each at 3 mg kg−1) was administered to guinea-pigs 1 min following soman poisoning. Treatment increased the LD50 of soman in a dose-dependent manner. The increase was statistically significant (p < 0.01) at the 33.9 mg kg−1 (MB327) or 30 mg kg−1 (HI-6) dose with a comparable degree of protection obtained for both compounds. Following administration of 10 mg kg−1 (i.m.), MB327 DMS reached plasma Cmax of 22 μM at 12 min with an elimination t1/2 of 22 min. In an adverse effect study, in the absence of nerve agent poisoning, a dose of 100 mg kg−1 or higher of MB327 DMS was lethal to the guinea-pigs. A lower dose of MB327 DMS (30 mg kg−1) caused flaccid paralysis accompanied by respiratory impairment. Respiration normalised by 30 min, although the animals remained incapacitated to 4 h. MB327 or related compounds may be of utility in treatment of nerve agent poisoning as a component of therapy with atropine, anticonvulsant and oxime, or alternatively as an infusion under medical supervision
On slip pulses at a sheared frictional viscoelastic/ non deformable interface
We study the possibility for a semi-infinite block of linear viscoelastic
material, in homogeneous frictional contact with a non-deformable one, to slide
under shear via a periodic set of ``self-healing pulses'', i.e. a set of
drifting slip regions separated by stick ones. We show that, contrary to
existing experimental indications, such a mode of frictional sliding is
impossible for an interface obeying a simple local Coulomb law of solid
friction. We then discuss possible physical improvements of the friction model
which might open the possibility of such dynamics, among which slip weakening
of the friction coefficient, and stress the interest of developing systematic

Anomalies of ac driven solitary waves with internal modes: Nonparametric resonances induced by parametric forces
We study the dynamics of kinks in the model subjected to a
parametric ac force, both with and without damping, as a paradigm of solitary
waves with internal modes. By using a collective coordinate approach, we find
that the parametric force has a non-parametric effect on the kink motion.
Specifically, we find that the internal mode leads to a resonance for
frequencies of the parametric driving close to its own frequency, in which case
the energy of the system grows as well as the width of the kink. These
predictions of the collective coordinate theory are verified by numerical
simulations of the full partial differential equation. We finally compare this
kind of resonance with that obtained for non-parametric ac forces and conclude
that the effect of ac drivings on solitary waves with internal modes is exactly
the opposite of their character in the partial differential equation.Comment: To appear in Phys Rev
Quantum Critical Behavior and Possible Triplet Superconductivity in Electron Doped CoO2 Sheets
Density functional calculations are used to investigate the doping dependence
of the electronic structure and magnetic properties in hexagonal NaCoO.
The electronic structure is found to be highly two dimensional, even without
accounting for the structural changes associated with hydration. At the local
spin density approximation level, a weak itinerant ferromagnetic state is
predicted for all doping levels in the range to , with competing
but weaker itinerant antiferromagnetic solutions. The Fermi surface, as
expected, consists of simple rounded hexagonal cylinders, with additional small
pockets depending on the lattice parameter. Comparison with experiment
implies substantial magnetic quantum fluctuations. Based on the Fermi surface
size and the ferromagnetic tendency of this material,it is speculated that a
triplet superconducting state analogous to that in SrRuO may exist

X-boson cumulant approach to the periodic Anderson model
The Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) can be studied in the infinite U limit by
employing the Hubbard X operators to project out the unwanted states. We have
already studied this problem employing the cumulant expansion with the
hybridization as perturbation, but the probability conservation of the local
states (completeness) is not usually satisfied when partial expansions like the
Chain Approximation (CHA) are employed. Here we treat the problem by a
technique inspired in the mean field approximation of Coleman's slave-bosons
method, and we obtain a description that avoids the unwanted phase transition
that appears in the mean-field slave-boson method both when the chemical
potential is greater than the localized level Ef at low temperatures (T) and
