Emerging debt and equity markets: an exploratory investigation of integration using daily data

In this paper we examine integration between emerging and U.S. debt and equity markets. We first investigate price changes around significant "events," in this case changes in short-term U.S. interest rates brought about by actions of the Federal Reserve. Second, we estimate the predictability of returns using both domestic and U.S. variables. Finally, we test whether a single latent variable can explain these returns. The evidence suggests that the degree of integration varies with security types and the country of origin. However, these differences between security types become less apparent over time

Solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation with absorbing boundary conditions and source terms in Mathematica 6.0

In recent decades a lot of research has been done on the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. On the one hand, some of the proposed numerical methods do not need any kind of matrix inversion, but source terms cannot be easily implemented into this schemes; on the other, some methods involving matrix inversion can implement source terms in a natural way, but are not easy to implement into some computational software programs widely used by non-experts in programming (e.g. Mathematica). We present a simple method to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation by using a standard Crank-Nicholson method together with a Cayley's form for the finite-difference representation of evolution operator. Here, such standard numerical scheme has been simplified by inverting analytically the matrix of the evolution operator in position representation. The analytical inversion of the N x N matrix let us easily and fully implement the numerical method, with or without source terms, into Mathematica or even into any numerical computing language or computational software used for scientific computing.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

Tuning hole mobility in InP nanowires

    Get PDF
Transport properties of holes in InP nanowires were calculated considering electron-phonon interaction via deformation potentials, the effect of temperature and strain fields. Using molecular dynamics, we simulate nanowire structures, LO-phonon energy renormalization and lifetime. The valence band ground state changes between light- and heavy-hole character, as the strain fields and the nanowire size are changed. Drastic changes in the mobility arise with the onset of resonance between the LO-phonons and the separation between valence subbands.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Impact of prior biologic use on persistence of treatment in patients with psoriatic arthritis enrolled in the US Corrona registry

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic condition characterized by a diverse set of symptoms, from swollen joints to nail disease to skin disease. A variety of treatment options are available, including tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFis). Little is known about treatment persistence in patients with PsA who initiate TNFi therapy, with and without prior biologic use. This study assessed persistence in these subgroups of patients with PsA and identified factors associated with persistence. This retrospective study utilized data from the Corrona registry of patients with PsA-with or without prior biologic experience-who initiated TNFi therapy between October 1, 2002, and March 21, 2013. Kaplan-Meier curves estimated median time to nonpersistence (discontinuation or switch to another biologic). Cox proportional hazards models identified factors associated with TNFi nonpersistence. A total of 1241 TNFi initiations were identified: 549 by biologic-naive and 692 by biologic-experienced patients. Through 4 years of follow-up, more biologic-naive than biologic-experienced patients remained persistent. Biologic-naive patients had a greater mean time to nonpersistence compared with biologic-experienced patients: 32 vs 23 months (p = 0.0002). Moderate and high disease activities based on clinical disease activity index and disease duration were associated with persistence in both biologic-naive and biologic-experienced patients. Additionally, in the biologic-experienced patients, the number of prior medications and skin disease were associated with persistence. The majority of patients with PsA in this study were persistent with their TNFi therapy; biologic-naive patients had greater persistence compared with biologic-experienced patients. Predictors of persistence differed slightly between biologic-naive and biologic-experienced patients

Heat capacity, thermal expansion and heat transport in the Han Blue (BaCuSi 4 O 10 ): Observation of structural phase transitions

    Get PDF
a b s t r a c t Structural phase transitions at 87 K and 103 K are reported for single-crystalline Han Blue (BaCuSi 4 O 10 ) by means of high-resolution thermal-expansion, thermal conductivity and heat capacity measurements. The phase transition at 103 K results in differing lengths of the a and b lattice parameters, and thus a lowering of the crystallographic symmetry. Negative thermal-expansion coefficients are observed perpendicular to the c-axis over a wide temperature range The thermal conductivity is small, and decreases with temperature, both of which suggest strong scattering of heat-carrying phonons. The principle Grüneisen parameter within the plane and perpendicular to it was determined to be γ 1 ¼ À1.09 and γ 3 ¼1.06 at room temperature; the bulk Grüneisen parameter is γ¼0.10. The results are consistent with the presence of low-energy vibrations associated with the collective motions of CuO 4 and Si 4 O 10 polyhedral subunits

Characterization of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes in patients from Rondônia, Brazil

Abstract

Background

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be classified into nine genotypes (A-I) defined by sequence divergence of more than 8% based on the complete genome. This study aims to identify the genotypic distribution of HBV in 40 HBsAg-positive patients from Rondônia, Brazil. A fragment of 1306 bp partially comprising surface and polymerase overlapping genes was amplified by PCR. Amplified DNA was purified and sequenced. Amplified DNA was purified and sequenced on an ABI PRISM® 377 Automatic Sequencer (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). The obtained sequences were aligned with reference sequences obtained from the GenBank using Clustal X software and then edited with Se-Al software. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted by the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach using BEAST v.1.5.3.

Results

The subgenotypes distribution was A1 (37.1%), D3 (22.8%), F2a (20.0%), D4 (17.1%) and D2 (2.8%).

Conclusions

These results for the first HBV genotypic characterization in Rondônia state are consistent with other studies in Brazil, showing the presence of several HBV genotypes that reflects the mixed origin of the population, involving descendants from Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans.</p
