    GMRT detections of low-mass young stars at 323 and 608 MHz

    We present the results of a pathfinder project conducted with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to investigate protostellar systems at low radio frequencies. The goal of these investigations is to locate the break in the free-free spectrum where the optical depth equals unity in order to constrain physical parameters of these systems, such as the mass of the ionised gas surrounding these young stars. We detect all three target sources, L1551 IRS 5 (Class I), T Tau and DG Tau (Class II), at frequencies 323 and 608 MHz (wavelengths 90 and 50 cm, respectively). These are the first detections of low mass young stellar objects (YSOs) at such low frequencies. We combine these new GMRT data with archival information to construct the spectral energy distributions for each system and find a continuation of the optically thin free-free spectra extrapolated from higher radio frequencies to 323 MHz for each target. We use these results to place limits on the masses of the ionised gas and average electron densities associated with these young systems on scales of ~1000 au. Future observations with higher angular resolution at lower frequencies are required to constrain these physical parameters further.We thank the staff of the GMRT who have made these observations possible.     A comparison of two-coloured filter systems for treating visual reading difficulties

    Copyright @ 2013 Informa UK Ltd.Purpose: Visual disturbances that make it difficult to read text are often termed “visual stress”. Coloured filters in spectacles may help some children overcome reading problems that are often caused by visual stress. It has been suggested that for optimal effect each child requires an individually prescribed colour for each eye, as determined in systems such as the “Harris Foundation” coloured filters. Alternatively, it has been argued that only blue or yellow filters, as used in the “Dyslexia Research Trust” (DRT) filter system, are necessary to affect the underlying physiology. Method: A randomised, double blind trial with 73 delayed readers, was undertaken to compare changes in reading and spelling as well as irregular and non-word reading skills after 3 months of wearing either the Harris or the DRT filters. Results: Reading improved significantly after wearing either type of filter (t = −8.4, p < 0.01), with 40% of the children improving their reading age by 6 months or more during the 3 month trial. However, spelling ability (t = 2.1, p = 0.05) and non-word reading (f = 4.7, p < 0.05) improved significantly more with the DRT than with the Harris filters. Conclusion: Education and rehabilitation professionals should therefore, consider coloured filters as an effective intervention for delayed readers experiencing visual stress

    Tensor hierarchies, Borcherds algebras and E11

    Gauge deformations of maximal supergravity in D=11-n dimensions generically give rise to a tensor hierarchy of p-form fields that transform in specific representations of the global symmetry group E(n). We derive the formulas defining the hierarchy from a Borcherds superalgebra corresponding to E(n). This explains why the E(n) representations in the tensor hierarchies also appear in the level decomposition of the Borcherds superalgebra. We show that the indefinite Kac-Moody algebra E(11) can be used equivalently to determine these representations, up to p=D, and for arbitrarily large p if E(11) is replaced by E(r) with sufficiently large rank r.Comment: 22 pages. v2: Published version (except for a few minor typos detected after the proofreading, which are now corrected

    Explosion risk assessment model for underground mine atmosphere

    In the coal mining industry, explosions or mine fires present the most hazardous safety threats for coal miners or mine rescue members. Hence, the determination of the mine atmosphere explosibility and its evolution are critical for the success of mine rescues or controlling the severity of a mine accident. However, although there are numbers of methods which can be used to identify the explosibility, none of them could well indicate the change to the explosion risk time evolution. The reason is that the underground sealed atmospheric compositions are so complicated and their dynamical changes are also affected by various influence factors. There is no one method that could well handle all such considerations. Therefore, accurately knowing the mine atmospheric status is still a complicated problem for mining engineers. Method of analyzing the explosion safety margin for an underground sealed atmosphere is urgently desired. This article is going to propose a series of theoretical explosion risk assessment models to fully analyze the evolution of explosion risk in an underground mine atmosphere. Models are based on characteristics of the Coward explosibility diagram with combining mathematical analyzing approaches to address following problems: (1) for an "not-explosive" atmosphere, judging the evolution of explosion risk and estimating the change-of-state time span from "not-explosive" to "explosive" and (2) for an "explosive" atmosphere, estimating the "critical" time span of moving out of explosive zone and stating the best risk mitigation strategy. Such research efforts could not only help mine operators understand the explosibility risk of a sealed mine atmosphere but also provide a useful tool to wisely control explosive atmosphere away from any dangers. In order to demonstrate research findings, case studies for derived models are shown and are also used to instruct readers how to apply them. The results provide useful information for effectively controlling an explosive underground sealed atmosphere

    A GMRT survey of regions towards the Taurus molecular cloud at 323 and 608 MHz

    We present observations of three active sites of star formation in the Taurus Molecular Cloud complex taken at 323 and 608 MHz (90 and 50 cm, respectively) with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Three pointings were observed as part of a pathfinder project, targeted at the young stellar objects (YSOs) L1551 IRS 5, T Tau and DG Tau (the results for these target sources were presented in a previous paper). In this paper, we search for other YSOs and present a survey comprising of all three fields; a by-product of the large instantaneous field of view of the GMRT. The resolution of the survey is of order 10 arcsec and the best rms noise at the centre of each pointing is of order 100μ100\,\muJy beam1^{-1} at 323 MHz and 50μ50\,\muJy beam1^{-1} at 608 MHz. We present a catalogue of 1815 and 687 field sources detected above 5σrms5\,\sigma_{\rm rms} at 323 and 608 MHz, respectively. A total of 440 sources were detected at both frequencies, corresponding to a total unique source count of 2062 sources. We compare the results with previous surveys and showcase a sample of extended extragalactic objects. Although no further YSOs were detected in addition to the target YSOs based on our source finding criteria, these data can be useful for targeted manual searches, studies of radio galaxies or to assist in the calibration of future observations with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) towards these regions.Science Foundation Ireland [Grant ID: 13/ERC/I2907], Science and Technology Facilities Council, European Research Council [Grant ID: ERC-2012-StG-307215 LODESTONE]This is the final version of the article.     The bending of cell sheets - from folding to rolling

    The bending of cell sheets plays a major role in multicellular embryonic morphogenesis. Recent advances are leading to a deeper understanding of how the biophysical properties and the force-producing behaviors of cells are regulated, and how these forces are integrated across cell sheets during bending. We review work that shows that the dynamic balance of apical versus basolateral cortical tension controls specific aspects of invagination of epithelial sheets, and recent evidence that tissue expansion by growth contributes to neural retinal invagination in a stem cell-derived, self-organizing system. Of special interest is the detailed analysis of the type B inversion in Volvox reported in BMC Biology by Höhn and Hallmann, as this is a system that promises to be particularly instructive in understanding morphogenesis of any monolayered spheroid system

    Constraining the nature of DG Tau A’s thermal and non-thermal radio emission

    DG Tau A, a class-II young stellar object (YSO) displays both thermal, and non-thermal, radio emission associated with its bipolar jet. To investigate the nature of this emission, we present sensitive (sigma ~ 2 microJy/beam), Karl G.\ Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) 6 and 10 GHz observations. Over 3.81 yr, no proper motion is observed towards the non-thermal radio knot C, previously thought to be a bowshock. Its quasi-static nature, spatially-resolved variability and offset from the central jet axis supports a scenario whereby it is instead a stationary shock driven into the surrounding medium by the jet. Towards the internal working surface, knot A, we derive an inclination-corrected, absolute velocity of 258 +/- 23 km/s. DG Tau A's receding counterjet displays a spatially-resolved increase in flux density, indicating a variable mass loss event, the first time such an event has been observed in the counterjet. For this ejection, we measure an ionised mass loss rate of (3.7 +/- 1.0) * 10**8 Msun/yr during the event. A contemporaneous ejection in the approaching jet isn't seen, showing it to be an asymmetric process. Finally, using radiative transfer modelling, we find that the extent of the radio emission can only be explained with the presence of shocks, and therefore reionisation, in the flow. Our modelling highlights the need to consider the relative angular size of optically thick, and thin, radio emission from a jet, to the synthesised beam, when deriving its physical conditions from its spectral index

    Mitochondrial phylogeography and demographic history of the Vicuña: implications for conservation

    The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna; Miller, 1924) is a conservation success story, having recovered from near extinction in the 1960s to current population levels estimated at 275 000. However, lack of information about its demographic history and genetic diversity has limited both our understanding of its recovery and the development of science-based conservation measures. To examine the evolution and recent demographic history of the vicuña across its current range and to assess its genetic variation and population structure, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the control region (CR) for 261 individuals from 29 populations across Peru, Chile and Argentina. Our results suggest that populations currently designated as Vicugna vicugna vicugna and Vicugna vicugna mensalis comprise separate mitochondrial lineages. The current population distribution appears to be the result of a recent demographic expansion associated with the last major glacial event of the Pleistocene in the northern (18 to 22°S) dry Andes 14–12 000 years ago and the establishment of an extremely arid belt known as the 'Dry Diagonal' to 29°S. Within the Dry Diagonal, small populations of V. v. vicugna appear to have survived showing the genetic signature of demographic isolation, whereas to the north V. v. mensalis populations underwent a rapid demographic expansion before recent anthropogenic impacts
