Duality and differential operators for harmonic Maass forms
Due to the graded ring nature of classical modular forms, there are many interesting relations between the coefficients of different modular forms. We discuss additional relations arising from Duality, Borcherds products, theta lifts. Using the explicit description of a lift for weakly holomorphic forms, we realize the differential operator acting on a harmonic Maass form for integers k > 2 in terms of acting on a different form. Using this interpretation, we compute the image of D k − 1. We also answer a question arising in recent work on the p-adic properties of mock modular forms. Additionally, since such lifts are defined up to a weakly holomorphic form, we demonstrate how to construct a canonical lift from holomorphic modular forms to harmonic Maass forms.postprin
Local Thermometry of Neutral Modes on the Quantum Hall Edge
A system of electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can be
tuned to create a gapped 2D system with one dimensional channels along the
edge. Interactions among these edge modes can lead to independent transport of
charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Measuring the chirality and
transport properties of these charge and heat modes can reveal otherwise hidden
structure in the edge. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall
system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstream and
downstream along the edge of the heater, we can measure both the chemical
potential and temperature of that edge to study charge and heat transport,
respectively. We find that charge is transported exclusively downstream, but
heat can be transported upstream when the edge has additional structure related
to fractional quantum Hall physics.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figure
Scanning-probe spectroscopy of semiconductor donor molecules
Semiconductor devices continue to press into the nanoscale regime, and new
applications have emerged for which the quantum properties of dopant atoms act
as the functional part of the device, underscoring the necessity to probe the
quantum structure of small numbers of dopant atoms in semiconductors[1-3].
Although dopant properties are well-understood with respect to bulk
semiconductors, new questions arise in nanosystems. For example, the quantum
energy levels of dopants will be affected by the proximity of nanometer-scale
electrodes. Moreover, because shallow donors and acceptors are analogous to
hydrogen atoms, experiments on small numbers of dopants have the potential to
be a testing ground for fundamental questions of atomic and molecular physics,
such as the maximum negative ionization of a molecule with a given number of
positive ions[4,5]. Electron tunneling spectroscopy through isolated dopants
has been observed in transport studies[6,7]. In addition, Geim and coworkers
identified resonances due to two closely spaced donors, effectively forming
donor molecules[8]. Here we present capacitance spectroscopy measurements of
silicon donors in a gallium-arsenide heterostructure using a scanning probe
technique[9,10]. In contrast to the work of Geim et al., our data show
discernible peaks attributed to successive electrons entering the molecules.
Hence this work represents the first addition spectrum measurement of dopant
molecules. More generally, to the best of our knowledge, this study is the
first example of single-electron capacitance spectroscopy performed directly

Strain-controlled criticality governs the nonlinear mechanics of fibre networks
Disordered fibrous networks are ubiquitous in nature as major structural
components of living cells and tissues. The mechanical stability of networks
generally depends on the degree of connectivity: only when the average number
of connections between nodes exceeds the isostatic threshold are networks
stable (Maxwell, J. C., Philosophical Magazine 27, 294 (1864)). Upon increasing
the connectivity through this point, such networks undergo a mechanical phase
transition from a floppy to a rigid phase. However, even sub-isostatic networks
become rigid when subjected to sufficiently large deformations. To study this
strain-controlled transition, we perform a combination of computational
modeling of fibre networks and experiments on networks of type I collagen
fibers, which are crucial for the integrity of biological tissues. We show
theoretically that the development of rigidity is characterized by a
strain-controlled continuous phase transition with signatures of criticality.
Our experiments demonstrate mechanical properties consistent with our model,
including the predicted critical exponents. We show that the nonlinear
mechanics of collagen networks can be quantitatively captured by the
predictions of scaling theory for the strain-controlled critical behavior over
a wide range of network concentrations and strains up to failure of the
material
Responsiveness differences in outcome instruments after revision hip arthroplasty: What are the implications?
Responsiveness to change is an important psychometric property of an outcome instrument. Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is critical to outcome assessment after total joint replacement, a surgery aimed at improving pain, function and HRQoL of the patients undergoing these procedures. In a recent study, Shi et al. examined the responsiveness to change of various subscales of two instruments, physician-administered Harris Hip Score and patient self-administered Short Form-36 (SF-36), 6 months after revision total hip arthroplasty. The responsiveness statistics for both scales were reasonable, higher for Harris Hip Score than SF-36. This is the first study to examine responsiveness of these instruments in revision THA patients in a systematic fashion
Bino Dark Matter and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis in the Constrained E6SSM with Massless Inert Singlinos
We discuss a new variant of the E6 inspired supersymmetric standard model
(E6SSM) in which the two inert singlinos are exactly massless and the dark
matter candidate has a dominant bino component. A successful relic density is
achieved via a novel mechanism in which the bino scatters inelastically into
heavier inert Higgsinos during the time of thermal freeze-out. The two massless
inert singlinos contribute to the effective number of neutrino species at the
time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, where the precise contribution depends on the
mass of the Z' which keeps them in equilibrium. For example for mZ' > 1300 GeV
we find Neff \approx 3.2, where the smallness of the additional contribution is
due to entropy dilution. We study a few benchmark points in the constrained
E6SSM with massless inert singlinos to illustrate this new scenario.Comment: 24 pages, revised for publication in JHE
The Nature of Attachment Relationships and Grief Responses in Older Adults: An Attachment Path Model of Grief
BACKGROUND: Various researchers have theorized that bereaved adults who report non-secure attachment are at higher risk of pathological grief. Yet past findings on avoidant attachment representations and grief have yielded limited and contradictory outcomes. Little research has been conducted with older adults to identify the psychological processes that mediate between self-reported attachment representations and the patterns of grief. OBJECTIVE: To examine the impacts of avoidant attachment and anxious attachment dimensions on emotion and non-acceptance, in response to the loss of a conjugal partner, and the mediating effect of yearning thoughts. DESIGN: Men (N = 21) and women (N = 68) aged 60 years and above who had lost a partner within the last 12 to 72 months were invited to participate. Participants rated their levels of yearning thoughts about the deceased, emotions and non-acceptance on the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief (TRIG-Present), and their type and level of general romantic attachment on the Experiences In Close Relationship questionnaire (ECR). RESULTS: Structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated that individuals who reported higher levels of avoidant attachment reported less emotional responses and less non-acceptance. SEM also showed that individuals who reported higher levels of anxious attachment reported greater emotional responses and greater non-acceptance. SEM further indicated that these relationships were mediated by yearning thoughts. CONCLUSION: People adopt different grief coping patterns according to their self-reported attachment representations, with the nature of their yearning thoughts influencing the process. Grief therapy may be organized according to individual differences in attachment representations
Interacting with the public as a risk factor for employee psychological distress
Background: The 1-month prevalence of any mental disorder in employees ranges from 10.5% to 18.5%. Mental disorders are responsible for substantial losses in employee productivity in both absenteeism and presenteeism. Potential work related factors contributing to mental difficulties are of increasing interest to employers. Some data suggests that being sales staff, call centre operator, nurse or teacher increases psychological distress. One aspect of these occupations is that there is an interaction with the public. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether employees who interact with the public are at greater risk of psychological distress
Adjunctive long-acting risperidone in patients with bipolar disorder who relapse frequently and have active mood symptoms
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this exploratory analysis was to characterize efficacy and onset of action of a 3-month treatment period with risperidone long-acting injection (RLAI), adjunctive to an individual's treatment regimen, in subjects with symptomatic bipolar disorder who relapsed frequently and had significant symptoms of mania and/or depression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Subjects with bipolar disorder with ≥4 mood episodes in the past 12 months entered the open-label stabilization phase preceding a placebo-controlled, double-blind study. Subjects with significant depressive or manic/mixed symptoms at baseline were analyzed. Significant depressive symptoms were defined as Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) ≥16 and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) < 16; manic/mixed symptoms were YMRS ≥16 with any MADRS score. Subjects received open-label RLAI (25-50 mg every 2 weeks) for 16 weeks, adjunctive to a subject's individualized treatment for bipolar disorder (mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and/or anxiolytics). Clinical status was evaluated with the Clinical Global Impressions of Bipolar Disorder-Severity (CGI-BP-S) scale and changes on the MADRS and YMRS scales. Within-group changes were evaluated using paired <it>t </it>tests; categorical differences were assessed using Fisher exact test. No adjustment was made for multiplicity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>162 subjects who relapsed frequently met criteria for significant mood symptoms at open-label baseline; 59/162 (36.4%) had depressive symptoms, 103/162 (63.6%) had manic/mixed symptoms. Most subjects (89.5%) were receiving ≥1 medication for bipolar disorder before enrollment. Significant improvements were observed for the total population on the CGI-BP-S, MADRS, and YMRS scales (p < .001 vs. baseline, all variables). Eighty-two (53.3%) subjects achieved remission at the week 16 LOCF end point. The subpopulation with depressive symptoms at open-label baseline experienced significant improvement on the CGI-BP-S and MADRS scales (p < .001 vs. baseline, all variables). Subjects with manic/mixed symptoms at baseline had significant improvements on the CGI-BP-S and YMRS scales (p < .001 vs. baseline, all variables). No unexpected tolerability findings were observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Exploratory analysis of changes in overall clinical status and depression/mania symptoms in subjects with symptomatic bipolar disorder who relapse frequently showed improvements in each of these areas after treatment with RLAI, adjunctive to a subject's individualized treatment. Prospective controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings.</p
Shot noise in mesoscopic systems
This is a review of shot noise, the time-dependent fluctuations in the
electrical current due to the discreteness of the electron charge, in small
conductors. The shot-noise power can be smaller than that of a Poisson process
as a result of correlations in the electron transmission imposed by the Pauli
principle. This suppression takes on simple universal values in a symmetric
double-barrier junction (suppression factor 1/2), a disordered metal (factor
1/3), and a chaotic cavity (factor 1/4). Loss of phase coherence has no effect
on this shot-noise suppression, while thermalization of the electrons due to
electron-electron scattering increases the shot noise slightly. Sub-Poissonian
shot noise has been observed experimentally. So far unobserved phenomena
involve the interplay of shot noise with the Aharonov-Bohm effect, Andreev
