Sternoclavicular Joint Septic Arthritis in a Healthy Adult: a Rare Diagnosis with Frequent Complications

    Get PDF
We report a case of complicated sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis in a previously healthy adult with no risk factors. An 83-year-old female presented to the emergency with a 1-week history of right shoulder pain followed by fever and prostration in the last 48 h. Computed tomography (CT) scan findings were consistent with right sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) septic arthritis complicated by periarticular abscess. Emergent surgical debridement was performed by a surgical team composed of orthopaedic and thoracic surgeons, followed by 6 weeks of antibiotic treatment. This case highlights the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a rare septic arthritis location but with frequent complications as well as the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Decomposition of spontaneous fluctuations in tumour oxygenation using BOLD MRI and independent component analysis

    Get PDF
Solid tumours can undergo cycles of hypoxia, followed by reoxygenation, which can have significant implications for the success of anticancer therapies. A need therefore exists to develop methods to aid its detection and to further characterise its biological basis. We present here a novel method for decomposing systemic and tumour-specific contributions to fluctuations in tumour deoxyhaemoglobin concentration, based on magnetic resonance imaging measurements

Potencial antimicrobiano de extratos de plantas na inibição de leveduras do gĂȘnero Candida

The increase in the resistance to antimicrobial drugs in use has attracted the attention of the scientific community, and medicinal plants have been extensively studied as alternative agents for the prevention of infections. The Candida genus yeast can become an opportunistic pathogen causing disease in immunosuppressive hosts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate dichloromethane and methanol extracts from Mentha piperita, Rosmarinus officinalis, Arrabidaea chica, Tabebuia avellanedae, Punica granatum and Syzygium cumini against Candida species through the analysis of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). Results presented activity of these extracts against Candida species, especially the methanol extract.

Investigating low-velocity fluid flow in tumours using convection-MRI

    Get PDF
Several distinct fluid flow phenemena occur in solid tumours, including intravascular blood flow and interstitial convection. To probe low-velocity flow in tumors resulting from raised interstitial fluid pressure, we have developed a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique named convection-MRI. It uses a phase-contrast acquisition with a dual-inversion vascular nulling preparation to separate intra- and extra-vascular flow. Here, we report the results of experiments in flow phantoms, numerical simulations and tumor xenograft models to investigate the technical feasibility of convection-MRI. We report a good correlation between estimates of effective fluid pressure from convection-MRI with gold-standard, invasive measurements of interstitial fluid pressure in mouse models of human colorectal carcinoma and show that convection-MRI can provide insights into the growth and response to vascular-targeting therapy in colorectal cancers

The effect of imatinib therapy on tumour cycling hypoxia, tissue oxygenation and vascular reactivity

BACKGROUND: Several biomedical imaging techniques have recently been developed to probe hypoxia in tumours, including oxygen-enhanced (OE) and blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These techniques have strong potential for measuring both chronic and transient (cycling) changes in hypoxia, and to assess response to vascular-targeting therapies in the clinic. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the use of BOLD and OE-MRI to assess changes in cycling hypoxia, tissue oxygenation and vascular reactivity to hyperoxic gas challenges, in mouse models of colorectal therapy, following treatment with the PDGF-receptor inhibitor, imatinib mesylate (Glivec). RESULTS: Whilst no changes were observed in imaging biomarkers of cycling hypoxia (from BOLD) or chronic hypoxia (from OE-MRI), the BOLD response to carbogen-breathing became significantly more positive in some tumour regions and more negative in other regions, thereby increasing overall heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS: Imatinib did not affect the magnitude of cycling hypoxia or OE-MRI signal, but increased the heterogeneity of the spatial distribution of BOLD MRI changes in response to gas challenges

Physical activity for people living with dementia: carer outcomes and side effects from the perspectives of professionals and family carers

    Get PDF
Adherence to physical activity is challenging for people living with dementia, and largely dependent on carers' involvement. Carers are likely to support physical activity based on their perceived balance between benefits and potential side effects of such intervention for both patients and themselves. Professionals also have a role in terms of optimising such interventions not only for people with dementia but also their carers.publishe
