    Economic vulnerability and poor service delivery made it more difficult for shack-dwellers to comply with COVID-19 restrictions : the impracticability and inequitable burden of universal/unstratified public health policies

    In South Africa, demand for housing close to viable/sustained sources of employment has far outstripped supply; and the size of the population living in temporary structures/shacks (and in poorly serviced informal settlements) has continued to increase. While such dwellings and settlements pose a number of established risks to the health of their residents, the present study aimed to explore whether they might also undermine the potential impact of regulations intended to safeguard public health, such as the stringent lockdown restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. Using a representative sample of 1,381 South African households surveyed in May-June 2021, the present study found that respondents in temporary structures/shacks were more likely to report non-compliance (or difficulty in complying) with lockdown restrictions when compared to those living in traditional/formal houses/flats/rooms/hostels (OR:1.61; 95%CI:1.06-2.45). However, this finding was substantially attenuated and lost precision following adjustment for preceding sociodemographic and economic determinants of housing quality (adjusted OR:1.20; 95%CI:0.78-1.87). Instead, respondents were far more likely to report non-compliance (or difficulty in complying) with COVID-19 lockdown restrictions if their dwellings lacked private/indoor toilet facilities (adjusted OR:1.56; 95%CI:1.08,2.22) or they were ‘Black/African’, young, poorly educated and under-employed (regardless of: their socioeconomic position, or whether they resided in temporary structures/shacks, respectively). Restrictions imposed to safeguard public health need to be more sensitively designed to accommodate the critical role that poverty and inadequate service delivery play in limiting the ability of residents living in temporary structures/shacks and inadequately serviced dwellings/settlements to comply

    The use of whole genome sequencing in the investigation of a nosocomial influenza virus outbreak

    Traditional epidemiological investigation of nosocomial transmission of influenza involves the identification of patients who have the same influenza virus type and who have overlapped in time and place. This method may miss-identify transmission where it has not occurred or miss transmission when it has. We applied influenza virus whole genome sequencing (WGS) to an outbreak of influenza A in a haematology/oncology ward and identified two separate introductions; one which resulted in 5 additional infections and 79 bed-days lost. Results from WGS are becoming rapidly available and may supplement traditional infection control procedures in the investigation and management of nosocomial outbreaks

Although the data demonstrate that copper(II) complexes are not able to compete with lanthanoids species in terms of contrast, the redox-dependent switch between diamagnetic copper(I) and paramagnetic copper(II) yields a novel redox-sensitive contrast moiety with potential for reversibility

    Apoptosis assays with lymphoma cell lines: problems and pitfalls

    Much attention has been focused on the manner in which tumour cells die after treatment with cytotoxic agents. The basic question is whether cells die via apoptosis or via direct damage from the toxic agent. Various assays have been used to make this distinction. However, we show herein that some of the widely used assays for apoptosis do not in fact distinguish between apoptosis and other forms of cell death. More specifically: (1) A sub-G1 DNA content, identified by propidium iodide staining, does not distinguish between apoptotic and necrotic cells; (2) loss of mitochondrial membrane potential does not distinguish between apoptotic and necrotic cells, unless combined with an assay for an intact cell membrane; (3) subcellular fragments that arise from dead cells or from apoptotic bodies can interfere with some assays for apoptosis such as annexin V staining, as they may be close to the size of intact cells, making it difficult to decide where to set the size threshold; (4) irradiated cells display a large increase in nonspecific Ab binding. This may be partly due to an increase in cell size, but, regardless of the cause, it can lead to a mistaken conclusion that there is an increase in a particular antigen if appropriate control reagents are not tested; and (5) experiments utilising Ab crosslinking have neglected the role of cell aggregation, which can cause multiple problems including death from mechanical stress when cells are handled. Consideration of these factors will improve our ability to determine the mode of cell death

    Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually. For this reason, keeping up to date with the literature is often difficult. This paper is a five year update of the sports nutrition review article published as the lead paper to launch the JISSN in 2004 and presents a well-referenced overview of the current state of the science related to how to optimize training and athletic performance through nutrition. More specifically, this paper provides an overview of: 1.) The definitional category of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements; 2.) How dietary supplements are legally regulated; 3.) How to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4.) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and enhance recovery; and, 5.) An overview of our current understanding of the ergogenic value of nutrition and dietary supplementation in regards to weight gain, weight loss, and performance enhancement. Our hope is that ISSN members and individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice and consultation with their clients

    This review focuses on behavioral genetic studies of sweet, umami, bitter and salt taste responses in mammals. Studies involving mouse inbred strain comparisons and genetic analyses, and their impact on elucidation of taste receptors and transduction mechanisms are discussed. Finally, the effect of genetic variation in taste responsiveness on complex traits such as drug intake is considered. Recent advances in development of genomic resources make behavioral genetics a powerful approach for understanding mechanisms of taste

    The Self-Selection of Democracies into Treaty Design: Insights from International Environmental Agreements

    Generally, democratic regime type is positively associated with participating in international environmental agreements. In this context, this study focuses on the legal nature of an agreement, which is linked to audience costs primarily at the domestic level that occur in case of non-compliance and are felt especially by democracies. Eventually, more legalized (\hard-law") treaties make compliance potentially more challenging and democratic leaders may anticipate the corresponding audience costs, which decreases the likelihood that democracies select themselves into such treaties. The empirical implication of our theory follows that environmental agreements with a larger share of democratic members are less likely to be characterized by hard law. This claim is tested using quantitative data on global environmental treaties. The results strongly support our argument, shed new light on the relationship between participation in international agreements and the form of government, and also have implications for the \words-deeds" debate in international environmental policy-making
