Searching for Gravitational Waves from the Inspiral of Precessing Binary Systems: Astrophysical Expectations and Detection Efficiency of "Spiky'' Templates
Relativistic spin-orbit and spin-spin couplings has been shown to modify the
gravitational waveforms expected from inspiraling binaries with a black hole
and a neutron star. As a result inspiral signals may be missed due to
significant losses in signal-to-noise ratio, if precession effects are ignored
in gravitational-wave searches. We examine the sensitivity of the anticipated
loss of signal-to-noise ratio on two factors: the accuracy of the precessing
waveforms adopted as the true signals and the expected distributions of
spin-orbit tilt angles, given the current understanding of their physical
origin. We find that the results obtained using signals generated by
approximate techniques are in good agreement with the ones obtained by
integrating the 2PN equations. This shows that a complete account of all
high-order post-Newtonian effects is usually not necessary for the
determination of detection efficiencies. Based on our current astrophysical
expectations, large tilt angles are not favored and as a result the decrease in
detection rate varies rather slowly with respect to the black hole spin
magnitude and is within 20--30% of the maximum possible values.Comment: 7 fig., accepted by Phys. Rev. D Minor modification
Thin accretion disc with a corona in a central magnetic field
We study the steady-state structure of an accretion disc with a corona
surrounding a central, rotating, magnetized star. We assume that the
magneto-rotational instability is the dominant mechanism of angular momentum
transport inside the disc and is responsible for producing magnetic tubes above
the disc. In our model, a fraction of the dissipated energy inside the disc is
transported to the corona via these magnetic tubes. This energy exchange from
the disc to the corona which depends on the disc physical properties is
modified because of the magnetic interaction between the stellar magnetic field
and the accretion disc. According to our fully analytical solutions for such a
system, the existence of a corona not only increases the surface density but
reduces the temperature of the accretion disc. Also, the presence of a corona
enhances the ratio of gas pressure to the total pressure. Our solutions show
that when the strength of the magnetic field of the central neutron star is
large or the star is rotating fast enough, profiles of the physical variables
of the disc significantly modify due to the existence of a corona.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
Professionalism, Golf Coaching and a Master of Science Degree: A commentary
As a point of reference I congratulate Simon Jenkins on tackling the issue of professionalism in coaching. As he points out coaching is not a profession, but this does not mean that coaching would not benefit from going through a professionalization process. As things stand I find that the stimulus article unpacks some critically important issues of professionalism, broadly within the context of golf coaching. However, I am not sure enough is made of understanding what professional (golf) coaching actually is nor how the development of a professional golf coach can be facilitated by a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.). I will focus my commentary on these two issues
Accounting for International War: The State of the Discipline
In studies of war it is important to observe that the processes leading to so frequent an event as conflict are not necessarily those that lead to so infrequent an event as war. Also, many models fail to recognize that a phenomenon irregularly distributed in time and space, such as war, cannot be explained on the basis of relatively invariant phenomena. Much research on periodicity in the occurrence of war has yielded little result, suggesting that the direction should now be to focus on such variables as diffusion and contagion. Structural variables, such as bipolarity, show contradictory results with some clear inter-century differences. Bipolarity, some results suggest, might have different effects on different social entities. A considerable number of studies analysing dyadic variables show a clear connection between equal capabilities among contending nations and escalation of conflict into war. Finally, research into national attributes often points to strength and geographical location as important variables. In general, the article concludes, there is room for modest optimism, as research into the question of war is no longer moving in non-cumulative circles. Assessing the impact of AGS-004, a dendritic cell-based immunotherapy, and vorinostat on persistent HIV-1 Infection
Approaches to deplete persistent HIV infection are needed. We investigated the combined impact of the latency reversing agent vorinostat (VOR) and AGS-004, an autologous dendritic cell immunotherapeutic, on the HIV reservoir. HIV+, stably treated participants in whom resting CD4+ T cell-associated HIV RNA (rca-RNA) increased after VOR exposure ex vivo and in vivo received 4 doses of AGS-004 every 3 weeks, followed by VOR every 72 hours for 30 days, and then the cycle repeated. Change in VOR-responsive host gene expression, HIV-specific T cell responses, low-level HIV viremia, rca-RNA, and the frequency of resting CD4+ T-cell infection (RCI) was measured at baseline and after each cycle. No serious treatment-related adverse events were observed among five participants. As predicted, VOR-responsive host genes responded uniformly to VOR dosing. Following cycles of AGS-004 and VOR, rca-RNA decreased significantly in only two participants, with a significant decrease in SCA observed in one of these participants. However, unlike other cohorts dosed with AGS-004, no uniform increase in HIV-specific immune responses following vaccination was observed. Finally, no reproducible decline of RCI, defined as a decrease of >50%, was observed. AGS-004 and VOR were safe and well-tolerated, but no substantial impact on RCI was measured. In contrast to previous clinical data, AGS-004 did not induce HIV-specific immune responses greater than those measured at baseline. More efficacious antiviral immune interventions, perhaps paired with more effective latency reversal, must be developed to clear persistent HIV infection
